dinosaurs··on Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (October 2024)
SEEKING WORK | Belgium / Remote

React Developer

Location: Europe

Remote: Yes

Willing to relocate: No

Technologies: HTML, CSS, JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Jest, Node.js

Résumé/CV: https://cupofcode.be/cv.pdf

Email: hello at cupofcode dot be

I am a front-end developer with over 10 years of direct experience across multiple sectors. I specialise in building reliable, well-tested applications and websites.

My speciality skill-set and interest lies in TypeScript development, with modern HTML, CSS and ReactJS on the front-end. If required, I also have experience as a full stack developer with Node.js, but I much prefer a front-end only role.

I am immediately available to discuss ideas, projects and requirements.

dinosaurs··on When Emo Conquered the Mainstream
Portrayal of Guilt is another band that lives somewhere between screamo and black metal, especially on their early releases.

If you liked the sound of Raein, there are some other suggestions I’d like to offer.

These are (were, sadly) all, like Raein (Italy), European screamo bands and while often named together with their American contemporaries (bands like City of Caterpillar, Circle Takes The Square, Neil Perry, …), I’ve always felt their sound is quite a bit different.

France: Daïtro, Sed Non Satiata, Aussitôt Mort, Belle Epoque, Amanda Woodward, Mihai Edrisch

Italy: Raein, La Quiete

Germany: Louise Cyphre, Tristan Tzara, Zann

dinosaurs··on Remix: On Rails
I haven’t tried Remix, but I’ve seen the demos and read the docs. It looks promising but from what I’ve seen I think you can hardly call it the next Rails. The older I get, the more experienced I get, the more I think back of my Rails days as an amazing time. The framework had/has it all. I haven’t found anything that comes close to the developer experience and how easy and structured it is to work with.

dinosaurs··on Ask HN: Do you respect DNT in your personal websites? How?
I had to look this up - DNT stands for "Do Not Track". More here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Do_Not_Track_legislation
dinosaurs··on Ask HN: Books you wish you had read earlier?
On the Road by Jack Kerouac.

I read it at 18 and I wish I had read it way earlier. It taught me to be mad, to live life, to get out and see the world. But looking back at it, it also taught me how to be responsible and how to not to be a jerk.

It, above all, showed me what beautiful writing is.

dinosaurs··on Ask HN: What's the single best piece of advice you've ever heard?

dinosaurs··on A curated list of AWS resources to prepare for all AWS Certifications
I have also been thinking of getting these certifications, but I'm not sure how much I'm going to get out of them in the long term, business-wise.

I want to study for them and get to know the AWS ecosystem better, actually learn something new for once. I do hope that there's some kind of ROI for getting them. I work freelance as a developer and I know some clients really do like certifications. Then again, AWS - as far as I know - isn't all that popular in Belgium.

dinosaurs··on Show HN: A simple infinite world in WebGL
Very nice. This reminded me of the flight simulator easter egg in old versions of MS Excel.

Does anyone have some good resources on getting started with WebGL or graphics programming in general? I know the libraries (like Three.JS) but I wouldn't know where to start or how to use them. I see Three.JS being used in fancy websites all the time now and would like to stay up to date.

dinosaurs··on Show HN: Mega Boilerplate
I wouldn't mind seeing that diagram. Just downloaded the React option and I'll definitely be going through the code as a learning process; server-side rendering still doesn't really click with me. Thanks!
dinosaurs··on Ask HN: What are some good React tutorials?
I'm subscribed to both of his Redux courses and they're amazing value for the money. Not affiliated, just a happy student.
dinosaurs··on Brussels Rocked by Terrorist Attacks
Indeed, the explosions were in the checkin area. I was there last week and there's a couple of armed soldiers in the area, but you can walk right in without any security screening.
dinosaurs··on Civilization: 25 years, 33M copies sold, 1B hours played, and 66 versions
The Civ series has always been on my radar as they seem to be quite interesting games. I remember going through the tutorials of either 4 or 5 but I never really got hooked. Not for a lack of trying, but I just didn't know what to do in the games. I always felt like I needed more guidance or something. Are there guides out there to help learn how to play these games? I might try 5 again after reading this!

I like how they post the weekly newsletter on the website. I'm not subscribed, but I read it every week. It's a nice way to stay up to date of some technologies I use daily.

dinosaurs··on Ask HN: When you can't fall asleep, what do you do?
When I can't sleep, I do something which I call the '1 2 3 4 5'-exercise.

While still in bed, lay on your back and think of something you can 'see' (imagine it), anything as long as it's something that physically exists. For example: your car, a guitar, a chair. Imagine it and try to describe it to yourself in the best possible detail. 'My guitar is surf green, it's a Fender Carbonita, it has 22 frets, it has a maple neck, ...' Do this for five things.

Then move on to "things you can feel". Physically feel. For example, describe how your couch feels, how your blanket feels. Again, every little detail. Five times.

Then think of five things you can hear: not at that exact moment in your bed, but things you might have heard throughout the day. Something I think of often is the sound of a train arriving or leaving. Again, try to describe it to yourself in the best possible detail. Do this, again, five times.

Then start over at describing something you can 'see'. Do it four times, move on to feeling, 4 times, move on to hearing, 4 times. Then all over again, except this time 3 times. Then 2, then 1.

I have never made it past the first 5 descriptions of 'see'. I usually fall asleep after describing two objects to myself.

It might help you fall asleep.. Might not. Worth a try, perhaps?

dinosaurs··on ReactCSS – Bringing Classes to Inline Styles
How does this compare to something like Radium? I have been looking for a clean way to work with styling in React and was planning to use Radium, then I noticed this.
dinosaurs··on Ask HN: Social anxiety and going to a conference alone
Thanks. That's exactly what I'm planning to do. I have been preparing, mentally, for this. I made a list of things that might cause me to panic, starting from the moment I walk out of my door to get on the train, until the moment I get back home. I ranked these events from 1 to 3, with 3 being the most stressful. For every 9 points I get, I'm rewarding myself with something, probably some vinyl ;) I don't expect to 'score' many points, but even one '3' would be a huge win, like you said. I'll let you know how it went afterwards. Thanks again.
dinosaurs··on Ask HN: Social anxiety and going to a conference alone
It would indeed defeat the purpose of going there. I have been to conferences before, but never alone. Usually, the person I went with was pretty social and I had no problems getting in touch with other people, through my colleague.

The worst case scenario doesn't sound too bad. I just don't want to come back without having spoken to anyone.. I would see that a bit as a failure, considering I'm going there to challenge myself.

dinosaurs··on Ask HN: Suggest a platform for programming blog
I use Ghost for my own blog and I'm happy with it. It's quick to set up, easy to use and beautiful. The markdown editor is great and in my experience the platform really stays out of your way and lets you focus on writing a blog post.
dinosaurs··on Atom
Looking forward to this. The fact that it's all JavaScript/Node based makes this particularly attracting for me. I haven't really been able to hack on ST2/3 because I'm not that proficient in Python and never found the time to properly dig into it. The repositories look great, really hope it'll live up to the expectations.

That being said, anyone with a spare invite? :) Ta.

dinosaurs··on Read your Standard Libraries
I think this is great advice and something I've been meaning to do for Ruby.

However, what in the case of JavaScript/Node.JS developers? What could/should they read to help them understand their language/frameworks better?

I've been reading through the Express source code lately to understand the module better. I'm wondering what other source code I could read to get a better grasp on Node/JS.

Thoughts?

dinosaurs··on Ask HN: What are your big plans for 2014?
- Write more. (started my blog yesterday, I hope I'll be able to continue writing for it.)

- Get a new job.

- Exercise more. (and don't give up as easily..)

- Move to another city

dinosaurs··on Test-driving a Node.JS API
Decided to start a blog. First blog post. Been playing around with Node.JS for a bit and after my Memo From Santa (memofromsanta.com) API turned out to return incorrect data, I decided to adopt a test-driven approach.

Any suggestions, improvements, criticism is always welcome.

dinosaurs··on Show HN: My girlfriend needed a Secret Santa web app, so I built her one
Bah :( Just read this and got out of bed to fix this. Thanks!

EDIT: Should be fixed now :) Thanks again for pointing that out. I really need to adopt a TDD approach.
