dinosaurdynasty··on PCSX2 Disables Wayland Support
Steam Deck uses Wayland. It uses Xwayland to run X11 applications.
dinosaurdynasty··on Rust without crates.io
This is similar to how WASI (standard system interfaces) for WASM work.
dinosaurdynasty··on GPU Survival Toolkit for the AI age
I wish someone would make the latter much easier, as someone who is definitely not the only person to get interested in this AI stuff lately who has a high tier AMD card that could surely do this stuff and would like to run this stuff locally for various reasons.

Currently I've given up and use runpod, but still...

dinosaurdynasty··on Fourteen Years of Go
Yeah I've been hit by this, I've setup a panic handler to purposefully kill the entire process because otherwise long-running threads die and don't restart (and it was easier to do it that way).
dinosaurdynasty··on Why Rust in Production?
Smaller amount of time than the equivalent in C/C++ probably.
dinosaurdynasty··on Ask HN: Embeddings as "Semantic Hashes"
Not for perceptual hashes!

Not all hashes are cryptographic hashes.

dinosaurdynasty··on Bringing garbage collected programming languages efficiently to WebAssembly
From what I remember basically every plugin attempt in those days (Java, flash, activex, etc) were all a dumpster fire when it came to security.

WASM saw that and decided to make security priority number one from day one.

dinosaurdynasty··on Bringing garbage collected programming languages efficiently to WebAssembly
Look at something like wasmtime, it lets you make native programs with very secure plugins that support multiple languages by default (that even works in a browser too, in the same secure by default way).

LLVM (without a lot of coding anyway, wasmer has an LLVM backend) doesn't do the whole "easy secure sandbox by default" thing, which IMHO is easily the biggest differentiator of WASM.

AssemblyScript...
dinosaurdynasty··on Bringing garbage collected programming languages efficiently to WebAssembly
WASM also looks really good for native plugins and modifications (it's fast and secure by default).
dinosaurdynasty··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
Debian uses Firefox ESR. It's rare for Linux distros to use ESR (Ubuntu and derivatives notably don't, I don't think flatpak does either).
dinosaurdynasty··on Bcachefs Merged into the Linux 6.7 Kernel
RAID1 is a lot more expensive and/or stores a lot less data than RAID5/6.
dinosaurdynasty··on Why you should probably be using SQLite
Or Firefox or Chrome
dinosaurdynasty··on Wireless is a trap (2020)
I use a wireless keyboard/mouse (trackpad really) with my TV. In theory I could run a wire, but it'd either be absurdly long or a tripping hazard.
dinosaurdynasty··on AI Tinder already exists: 'Real people will disappoint you, but not them'
I think a lot of people will love being able to have deep and personal conversations at all
dinosaurdynasty··on AI Tinder already exists: 'Real people will disappoint you, but not them'
Your sense of love sounds like hell.

> you cannot love a chatbot no matter how clever

People fall in love with inanimate buildings, I'm pretty sure a chatbot is going to be much easier than that, especially as the technology gets better. (Also people are already trying to put these into bodies.)

> ...What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly...

Suffering doesn't make things more valuable, it is a horrible cost, and if you can't value things without suffering well that is your psychological problem to fix on your own.

dinosaurdynasty··on AI Tinder already exists: 'Real people will disappoint you, but not them'
Have you never heard of chronic pain? That's basically what doctors do in a lot of cases (if even)
dinosaurdynasty··on AI Tinder already exists: 'Real people will disappoint you, but not them'
I mean, youtuber's have programmed mods to give themselves electric shock when they get damaged in a game. Also various "hardcore" game modes that delete themselves when you die.

I'm sure they will _try_.

dinosaurdynasty··on AI Tinder already exists: 'Real people will disappoint you, but not them'
I'm sure they could figure out how to act "forgetful", as some people with really good memories already do.
dinosaurdynasty··on K3s – Lightweight Kubernetes
systemd units are fine. It's even pretty close to the recommendations for podman.

You can use something like Ansible to make it a bit easier, if that even makes sense in your use case.

dinosaurdynasty··on K3s – Lightweight Kubernetes
Lol no. Docker Swarm, Nomad, even ancient Pacemaker are all simpler and easier to use than k8s. I don't think there's a single feature k8s adds over those options that is actually useful in a non-Enterprise use case (especially homelab stuff, assuming the point of your homelab is not learning k8s).
dinosaurdynasty··on AI hype is built on flawed test scores
LLMs are trained to predict text, and one of the results of this is the LLM has as many "faces" as exist in the training data, so it's going to be _very_ different depending on the prompt. It's not a consistent entity like a human. RLHF is an attempt to mediate this, but it doesn't work perfectly.
dinosaurdynasty··on A Call for Developers – Jellyfin
It's extremely convenient to have software keep track of which episode on a 7 season show I'm on
dinosaurdynasty··on First Impressions with GPT-4V(ision)
I'm hopeful that AI cars make renting one cheap enough that I can just rent an AI car the 0-2 times/week I need one instead of owning a car and all the time and stress on maintenance that entails.
dinosaurdynasty··on TOFU: Do You Check?
For SSH: setup an SSH CA and then disable asking in the client config.
dinosaurdynasty··on TOFU: Do You Check?
Or you know SSHFP records + DNSSEC to verify hostkeys.

Which is something OpenSSH already supports.

dinosaurdynasty··on It’s not intelligent if it always halts: A critical perspective on AI approaches
Agreed. This seems to prove that humans aren't intelligent.
dinosaurdynasty··on Why Static Languages Suffer from Complexity (2022)
TypeScript is like this (can just give up and `as any` anything).
dinosaurdynasty··on LK-99: Team of Southeast University observed zero resistance below 110 K
That would suggest that a very high quality sample would superconduct at room temperature.
dinosaurdynasty··on Humans aren’t mentally ready for an AI-saturated ‘post-truth world’
Bing wasn't programmed to disagree but often did to hilarious effect.
