dingdingdang··on You can now disable all AI features in Zed
Good work dude! It's way more functional to integrate the overall ecosystem rather than re-forking vscode ad infinitum!
dingdingdang··on Commodore 64 Ultimate
The frontpage needs technical details, you are not selling these retro machines to regular consumers but to nerds and the children of nerds*.

*including myself.

edit: pish-posh, I'm just not looking properly, found the specs and happy to see it's fpga based and has beefy properties for what it's doing!

edit-edit: is this related to RetroRecipes/Perifractic activities around the Commodore trademark?

dingdingdang··on Bought myself an Ampere Altra system
Sounds good, but also sounds odd that a dicey internet situation caused you to move to the cloud as opposed to local (I guess could be dicey uplink for remote team or similar)
dingdingdang··on Why JPEGs still rule the web (2024)
This article* makes the case for mozjpeg cleanly beating webp when we are above 500x500px image sizes. So. There's a lot more performance/compression to be gained within the jpeg container format than people generally argue for.

* https://siipo.la/blog/is-webp-really-better-than-jpeg

edit: https://opensource.googleblog.com/2024/04/introducing-jpegli... is likely the real GOAT when it comes to modern jpeg encoders in that it effectively breaks the 8bit color space "ceiling" within the format!

dingdingdang··on Fossify – A suite of open-source, ad-free apps
I love these projects, a simple way to collectively cleanly payroll a-person/persons to work on these projects would be superb. Structuring of the Zig org is a light-in-the-dark for this sort of thing!
dingdingdang··on OxCaml - a set of extensions to the OCaml programming language.
Probably spoilt here but being used to the excellent vscode plugin (well vscodium in my case) for Golang but... any plans to integrate with vscode ecosystem? Makes setup so straightforward!
dingdingdang··on I made a chair
So true.. plus all the "plush" plastic pellet "landings" rather than simply dirt cause oh no: someone may get into contact with some microbes.. gotta keep those allergy numbers rolling. /s
dingdingdang··on LTXVideo 13B AI video generation
Super AI tech to the rescue!
dingdingdang··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
Or Signal app.. it works well for this sort of thing!
dingdingdang··on 108B Pixel Scan of Johannes Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring
Am I the only one here who is looking for the jpg?
dingdingdang··on Office is too slow, so Microsoft is making it load at Windows startup
XFCE is the Win 2000 UI of the Linux ecosystem, perfectly functional and fine; tweaks are possible if needed.
dingdingdang··on Business co-founders in tech startups are less valuable than they think
Having started businesses with the explicit lack of biz-co-founders I beck to differ. That is of course unless your da Vinci-like super modal capabilities allows you to feel unlimited joy when doing business plans, taxes & marketing alongside your (hopefully) core competency of product development.
dingdingdang··on CosAE: Learnable Fourier Series for Image Restoration
No code has been released though?
dingdingdang··on Less Slow C++
Someone is still putting tremendous effort into this project so I reckon it would be worthwhile to submit this, obviously well thought through, criticism as a PR for the repo!
dingdingdang··on Teuken-7B-Base and Teuken-7B-Instruct: Towards European LLMs (2024)
Indeed. I've thought from the beginning that LLMs should focus specifically on ONE language for this exact reason (i.e. mediocre/bad duplication of data in multiple languages). All other languages than English essentially "syphon" off capacity/layers/weights that could otherwise have held more genuine data/knowledge. Other languages should not come into the picture afaics - dedicated translation LLMs/existing-solutions can handle this aspect just fine and there's just no salient reason to fold partial-multi-language-capacity in through fuzzy/unorganised training.
dingdingdang··on JSLinux
I know for a fact that ppl are serious on hn when they post in their sleep without any fanfare whatsoever
dingdingdang··on Problems with Go channels (2016)
Cheers for clear summary, I take it you mean sync.WaitGroup and not WorkGroup? As a beginner I started up with WaitGroup usage years ago since it was more intuitive to me.. worked fine afaict.
dingdingdang··on Problems with Go channels (2016)
If channels are the wrong way to do things in Golang, what is the right way?
dingdingdang··on Sweetener saccharin shows surprise power against antibiotic resistance
But surely.. we also got a decent amount of research showing how Saccharin causes increased biofilm formation: https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8156656/

Guess it's all about the usage model..!!

dingdingdang··on Show HN: The C3 programming language (C alternative language)
Does C3's compiler utilise the highly optimized C compilers like clang and gcc similar to Vlang and Nim?
dingdingdang··on That Time I Recreated Photoshop in C++
Let's get a direct link to this beauty in place:

dingdingdang··on Brother refutes "false claims" that it bricked printers using third-party ink
Rossmann also wholesale recommends LibreWolf as a replacement for Firefox with full calm assurance despite the maintainer(s) obviously being anonymous and unvetted and there being no organisation behind the fork to serve as a legal entity.

A prior time he did this was with GrapheneOS which ended in tears when he had epic fallout with the primary maintainer and withdrew all support because.. no surprise.. all the security of that fork is in the pocket of a single individual who may or may not, as according to Rossmann, be stable any given day of the week.

We all make mistakes and I hope he will retract if needed but the attention economy is clearly an -attention- economy, not a truthful-content economy..

dingdingdang··on NCSC, GCHQ, UK Gov't expunge advice to “use Apple encryption”
Surely Apple's lawyers can use this information in court - the fact that the government itself is relying on, and recommending, citizens and (presumably) intelligence assets to use Apple's encryption technology abroad makes it VERY clear that outlawing said technology will systematically weaken ALL UK information infrastructure and make it 110% easier for foreign powers to exploit and sabotage the UK as whole.

edit: removed political quip since, as evidenced by sub-comments, it too easily derails from the primary discussion point, excuse-moi.

dingdingdang··on The weird Hewlett Packard FreeDOS option (2022)
The real pertinent question here is:

Can I install Win311 on it!?

dingdingdang··on How to gain code execution on hundreds of millions of people and popular apps
My exact thought as well, simply point the user to a well established and proper channel for auto updates and then the dev simply needs to upload/release to said repos when a new version is put out. As an aside: Chocolatey is currently the only (stable/solid) way to consistently keep things up to date on the Win platform in my book.
dingdingdang··on Show HN: One year of bewCloud (a simpler Nextcloud alternative)
By all means prefer native rendering if possible
dingdingdang··on Apple pulls data protection tool after UK government security row
The /s is strong with this one.
dingdingdang··on Show HN: One year of bewCloud (a simpler Nextcloud alternative)
Any and all activity in this domain is appreciated! I used to run Nextcloud for a few companies but.. it's just subpar and like OP rightly states the complexity inherited is out of this world.
dingdingdang··on Caddy – The Ultimate Server with Automatic HTTPS
I totally agree, I have long since accepted that this is how things are but.. that doesn't mean it's right.. it feels like browsers are overtly obstructing the use of the local system as a development platform and local-hosting option. This also includes base-line features like the JS localStorage API that only works when connected to a domain name (localhost is a no-go). That last one in particular just feels perverse to me - in NO WAY should that require a domain name, it feels anti-democratic and clunky as can be. It also 100% stops webapps from being local-first (i.e. I save an HTML/JS bundle to a folder and run the "app", it's automatically isolated to said folder) with network connectivity as a secondary option. If browsers could do the latter then it would be a death-blow to a lot of remaining platform-specific apps.
dingdingdang··on LibreOffice still kicking at 40, now with browser tricks and real-time collab
Did the same back in the day with OpenOffice. MS Word would crash ad-hoc past a certain page count plus the auto-indexing feature of OO actually worked and was predictable. Also.. the styling was, if clunky, at least workable! Actually think the later versions of LibreOffice have started going down hill, heavier (initially the libre fork prided itself on being light-weight afair) and still as ugly as ever.
