Hey there!

dimitrisnl··on Latest Trends in React
It's good to take a step back and realize how many tools there are now. For example, there are so many component libraries that sit on different abstraction layers. From very opinionated, to super configurable (like Radix). The React ecosystem is great right now.

So a good component library, a good framework like Remix, and it's such a joy to code on the front end.

dimitrisnl··on Analysing the Twitter User Exodus to Mastodon, Bluesky, and Threads
> Our analysis shows that Bluesky cleverly capitalized on the conflicts between Twitter and two of its competitors, such as Threads and Mastodon. With a lot of overlap and association in usage with Twitter’s user base, Bluesky secured its spot in the competitive landscape.

Bluesky sent invites during the OpenAI drama. Their "popular" posts were about Elon. They missed their chance imo.

dimitrisnl··on Kind of annoyed at React
There's nothing wrong with html/css/js. They are a joy to use really. We're just discussing the abstraction of React here. No need to completely disregard them. You can't eitherway.
dimitrisnl··on Remix Is Incredible – If It Fits Your Use Case
Remix's biggest feature for me, is that I most of the time don't need its documentation.

It has a simple mental model (exposed to me), and then it's platform specifics while using React as a templating language.

dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: Password field, until username is input' pattern is horrible
Also having to click "edit" on the username makes it very annoying. Auth0 implements that.
dimitrisnl··on Am or PM: When is the best time to exercise?
Saving you a click: - Morning boosts mood - Afternoon yields better performance - Evening won't hurt your sleep if you have a 1.5h gap
dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: Would you pay to reduce HTTP requests?
The question is very vague, and kind of fails the "Mom test".
dimitrisnl··on Building Basecamp project stacks with Hotwire
> At 37signals we work in teams of two, one designer, one programmer; and we ship projects in 6 weeks or less.

I'm curious how PR reviews work in this case. Does someone outside of the team review them?

dimitrisnl··on US Smartphone Shipments Decline 19% in Q3 2023 as More Americans Delay Upgrade
On the same boat. 13 mini is just the perfect size. No feature missing, no need to upgrade until it dies.
dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: What item/service can you buy for less than $50 that is life changing?
It's stupid, but a simple shoe horn made my lifer easier. I used to just squeeze my feet in my sneakers.
dimitrisnl··on Restructuring Prisma
> All that being said, I take full responsibility. As your CEO, I must do better, and I will.

This has been super tiring to read, announcement after announcement.

dimitrisnl··on Don't use Tailwind for a design system (2021)
I've been using Tailwind for my component library and I don't agree. For example "It is optimised for writing, but not for reading" is certainly a problem, but this is why I created a component library. To abstract this.

Also this is weird:

``` const Card = (props) => { const className = "p-" + props.gap.toString(); return <div className={className} />; }; ```
Why do this? If gap needs to be set, then break apart the Card subcomponents (Card.Title, Card.Description, Card.Footer) and let the consumer handle their odd logic that break the design system guidelines.
I have faced issues with Tailwind too, but I would pick this 10 out of 10 times over styled-components and such.
dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: What's on your learning list?
FP-TS. Been a struggle so far.
dimitrisnl··on Airbnb’s design to live and work anywhere
Not the city, but the locals who are not in tech.
dimitrisnl··on GitHub: Private Profiles beta
So how does it look? I don't see any previews on their blog.
dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: Hybrid/Remote software team rituals
> Posting once a week about what I did for fun over the weekend, usually with photos.
> Setting up longer phone call 1:1s where both attendees are walking.
Please god no.
dimitrisnl··on Optimising Largest Contentful Paint
These big guys can't optimise like we do in our websites. That Hotjar/FullStory/HubSpot/Pendo link is essential. Removing or updating that high-definition hero image, will require numerous meetings. Fixing up the contrast rate is an afterthought for the PO that nitpicks the design.
dimitrisnl··on Optimising Largest Contentful Paint
Wish there was some kind of tutorial with tips about web vitals. It feels overwhelming trying to catch up with all these little nuances.
dimitrisnl··on [dead]
My head-canon is that we hugged it to death, by sharing our websites on the other thread.
dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: Share your personal site
lol, we hugged Netlify and my site (among others) is down
Started with blogging, trying to rebrand.
dimitrisnl··on USWDS: The United States Web Design System
I believe it's about not using their domain as whole.
dimitrisnl··on Modern PHP
Author here, I agree. I use ligatures mostly because I write JS and it's not that annoying. Now that I wrote something about PHP it's a bit problematic.
dimitrisnl··on Incident with GitHub Actions, API requests, Codespaces, Git operations, Issues
Which one are you referring to?
dimitrisnl··on MDN Redesign
Oh my, it looks ... bad and hard to read. Any way to spin off the previous UI?
dimitrisnl··on State of JavaScript 2021
Not really, Vercel has employed the Svelte creator. They don't care which framework (svelteKit in this case) is popular, as long as it drives people to use their service.
Also people can have opinions, outside of being company spoke persons.
dimitrisnl··on Ask HN: What is your “I don't care if this succeeds” project?
Looks great, thanks for sharing - will definitely use it moving forward!
dimitrisnl··on Not Another Framework
> most projects use various component libraries that abstract web APIs from devs
You would be surprised
dimitrisnl··on Not Another Framework
Very interesting, hoping to see some real-world examples soon.
