dilznoofus··on Who is still inside the metaverse?
*full packing physics for the parachute! Frayed lines, tangling, dodgy mechanisms! The risk of plummeting to your account's demise.
dilznoofus··on The early 90s tech scene that created L0pht, the legendary hackerspace
It's pretty annoying that Gnome themeing tools, rather than developing and becoming better/more cohesive, were made totally irrelevant

I can't quite understand how "Linux GUI, make it look how you want! Personalized OS!" became "Linux - this one unchangably bland tablet UI on your desktop!"

I know that other WM/DM exist, but Gnome is incredibly popular, often the default, and was so close to being what people saw as the ideal Desktop.

dilznoofus··on Plans to repopulate Hawaii’s forests with its crows have been upended
...yeah, on the whole I can't imagine thinking that humanity's impact on birds overall has been a good thing

Unless you really, really love pigeons

dilznoofus··on A 1967 experiment that proved anyone can design a nuclear weapon
I mean that has got to be a sarcastic caveat, rather than a point against the probability of it happening

Why not just keep a bunch of rats and pump them with filth and antibiotics until it outpaces our known chemistries?

And a few million bucks isn't hard to come by when you're in control of an entire country

Even if it's as poor as NK, the guy who commands it can have more material riches than most of us can really consider

Which is not small

If you have one nuclear weapon, you can probably get away with setting up an enrichment framework to produce more without sweating too much.

I'd be less worried about Russia using a nuke directly as a state, and more about it doing what everyone feared in the fallout of the USSR collapsing.

They've already demonstrated a willingness for its materials to be used obviously on foreign soil with the barest pretense of deniability. I can't imagine they'd sweat too much if somebody set off a dirty bomb, and the willingness to take direct action in response isn't guaranteed by NATO.

I suppose it's somewhat up to how willing China and Iran are to ignore such an obvious act. The thing that actually keeps me up isn't their real response, but Russia's assumption of what it will be. Russia's predictive powers seem to err towards 'what we want is the right idea' more than 'we can actually get away with this', and they've simply taken advantage of tolerance more than weakness/fear.

dilznoofus··on More students are turning away from college and toward apprenticeships
This is pretty common at other places - my PhD advisor was exasperated that a polymer chemist would get an A in Physical Chemistry II, when I had a national lab collaboration to work on, a fellowship to write, and a first-author paper to get out the door.

In retrospect? Yeah, I probably should have taken a B and finished relevant things faster. I have almost zero use for my understanding of the mathematic accounting of the particle-in-a-box.

Of course in grad school a C is a failure, so the wiggle room is slightly less generous.

dilznoofus··on Jailbreak Chat: A collection of ChatGPT jailbreaks
That's the difference between how people actually think about things versus how they think others do

I'm pretty sure that only people who'd argue against the slur-switch are doing it in bad faith.

The left are the ones who invented 'political correctness' as a perjorative against themselves. Pretending nobody practices intellectual self reflection is silly.

dilznoofus··on Social media is a cause, not a correlate, of mental illness in teen girls
As undeveloped mentally as highschoolers are, they have years more development more than middleschoolers

Middleschoolers are suddenly blasted with hormones, and are basically accelerating at breakneck speed. Everyone's body is changing wildly, you're thinking and feeling new things every day, and it's all a total mindfuck.

By highschool, the hypernovelty has worn off. Yes, they're still developing and figuring things out, but it's not quite as much of the surreal existential body-horror that middleschool is.

I have some passive knowledge of seals as used by Japanese folk

What determines the design of ones' seal as a foreigner? Just transliteration?

dilznoofus··on Fentanyl vaccine tested in rats
And perhaps nobody cared enough to log it, especially in the lower classes

You just shrugged off opium dens, or moonshining, or whatever substances could be had. The demon liquor and marijuana and heroin were all well known.

But, people didn't care about the poor. Whether or not they do now, they do collect data about them. We don't necessarily have great understanding about prevalence of who used them how often, so we shouldn't pretend there was a significant difference unless there's a reason to. Nostalgia or rose-colored glasses or pretences of a better time aren't valid reasons to break from expectation.

dilznoofus··on What not to write on your security clearance form (1988)
I mean, yeah. It's like gun laws that prohibit having a joint whilst commit armed robbery or whatever - it's not actually trying to stop the behavior, merely empower the prosecutor after the fact.

But, hey, there might be a true believer on the T-side! God says you're not supposed to lie, so it's a real Catch-22 - 'Render unto Caesar the evidence he deserves.'

It was an ABC prime-time show. It's fine for casual viewing

It's not notable for being hyperdetailed. It's notable for being a wierdo spin on a noir.

Because (1) they originally used the '' character. In ASCII, the cat is 'c'. Does it bother you that it doesn't turn around?

Does it bother you that they aren't facing up/north? Why not?

I can't say I've ever heard anyone complain about 'sliding' or 'moonwalking' before. Mostly because they're just disappearing from one coordinate and appearing in the neighbouring one.

$7k tends to be on the higher end, but it ends up fluctuating wildly

When he releases a new version, people pay attention and donate. When he takes time to introduce fun features that drive excitement, people don't donate because he doesn't release.

He occasionally adds a gentle ask for donations at the end of his progress blogposts, and it seems more like a guy who hates having to ask and would prefer to ignore money - which also seems like his entire personality.

For a general thing, the NYT profile of Zach and Tarn from DF being in the MoMA is great, but that was 2011:

https://www.nytimes.com/2011/07/24/magazine/the-brilliance-o...

"Zach brought over a drinking glass from the house in case I got thirsty, because Tarn owns only a couple of dishes. In the fridge were three sodas and a jug of water and nothing else. Tarn said I was welcome to anything, although the jug technically belonged to Scamps — the tap water has something in it that makes the cat refuse to drink it. Tarn consumed “maybe one glass” of water in the last three months, hydrating with soft drinks instead. “Water’s not doing it for me these days,” he said. “I know it’s bad, but the sugar goes right into programming the game. If I don’t drink soda now, I get a headache and can’t do any work.”

Tarn has had to deal with fans haranguing him about his health for a while. It's been a pretty common meme in DF culture to wonder what's going to happen to the codebase when Tarn passes it, with heavy implication that it'll never get to v1.0.

" . . . in the only moment I heard him speak with anything like bitterness, Tarn called Minecraft a “depressing distillation of our own stuff.” He paused, adding more magnanimously that the game “has its own things going for it.” The problem, he concluded, “isn’t with Minecraft so much as it’s with society.”
