Then make have mckinsey make a graph of aesthetics ranking from dystopian feeling to utopian. Probably cost $5mm to make that slideshow

I personally like the 'swim to school' roads.

Some people have too much power and money.

Spending to try and make desalination economically viable and other green tech is cool.

Vanity projects that forcibly remove (potentially murdered) residents, wasting said green energy on fake ski resorts, etc are not.

dillondoyle··on Mountain Project – Rock Climbing Guides: Routes, Photos and Forum
Not sure why this was submitted here but not complaining!

MP is nice, but lacking. Hard to complain when it's free and it's user provided data.

One thing maybe more relevant for HN there is a new company doing 3d scans of sport crags.

It looks really really cool. But I only boulder - would still be amazing to have.

https://www.rockgarden.io/

Way more helpful than user submitted photos and directions which are only half correct, and missing 70%

MP also suffers from the most active climbers mot wanting to share their favorite place.

This sport becoming too popular is a legitimate problem in many spaces - indoor and out.

Guidebooks are still mostly a 1 person, small publisher thing. Which I love.

Jamie Emerson is one of the fathers of CO climbing and is releasing 2 new books. MT Evans is out. I can't wait for RMNP.

This is a hard space to scale as a free service. because like a lot of online things only like the top .1% are providing the bulk of the knowledge and content.

History and stewardship are big problems too.

Blasting music in the Park for instance. And then arguing flame wars on Insta between a teen and Jamie :)

Access is constantly threatened and it takes outreach and relationships with land managers to keep open. Saving Little Cotton Wood is a big one that looks like they're going to literally be steam rolled and blasted apart.

Though some of these 'old guys' used to stash pads themselves lol. Can complain about ethics but climbing has had a rebellious, anti-establishment streak. Losing the nicheness and seriousness of climbing is hard for me (gyms are filled with once in a while happy hour climbers and man-splanning dates)

It would be awesome if RockGarden got some corporate backing or funding to expand. Only a few companies (red bull comes to mind. Yeti too.) that are willing to spend without an obvious direct ROI.

Make DIY scanning rigs & send to paid locals across the world.

Background: I'm a fairly serious climber, mostly gym rat trying to get outside as I can't keep up with the kids anymore!

Sorry that sucks. I'm intimately aware of addiction and how it can sadly smash families and people from all backgrounds and economic situations, so I'm empathetic to that problem.

And I'm for sure not disadvantaged myself.

I didn't know where to comment a reply this seemed most relevant.

I guess what I'm trying to get at is a lot of the threads here, to me, read as elitist & missing the full picture.

E.g. for instance missing the value of entertainment.

even on an unkind view of looking at players only as addicts, like lots of drugs (legal and not), that dopamine hit is fun...

to be clear I'm not trying to put that negative frame into all the people's intention here, just trying to explain how I read a chunk of the comments

It's not only some uneducated non-optimal financial ROI calculation made by disadvantaged people, or compulsive gamblers, who are being taken advantage of by state sponsored casinos imho

dillondoyle··on State lotteries transfer wealth out of needy communities, investigation finds
I can't be the only one here who buys them.

I make good money. They're only $2.

The 5 minutes I spend walking to the office after buying one spent thinking about what I would do with ___ is worth it.

Yes, I know the math and am under no delusion about winning. I'm more likely to die trying to avoid the shitty drivers on this walk.

It's day dream entertainment!

how about adding specific person Jane Doe searches address ___ of planned parenthood within 2 weeks of last menstruation

To me the ultimate problem isn't the scope of the search. It's that the guardrails against partisanship are gone via takeover of law by Republicans and christian crusaders.

Attorneys general and judiciaries have huge power and are so lopsided depending on geography and political party in charge. and I don't trust the ultimate Supreme Court to do what's right in the end

that it's illegal now is crazy. That is seems likely that they will try to prosecute people (more likely TX style citizen suits) for getting healthcare in a different state is crazier.

dillondoyle··on Police sweep Google searches to find suspects; facing its first legal challenge
Would person ___ searches 'within 2 weeks of last menstruation' be narrow enough?

The case of this is fine to me on it's face. But examples like the above are terrifying.

This deserves it's own thread, but just read this piece after this thread thought it was worth chaining to this comment as relevant.

"China lured graduate jobseekers into digital espionage."

Sure all governments spy. But you can't discount the massive digital dragnet (targeting their entire own country and us as well) and huge mechanical turk of p2p spies they have built.

100% for it - but afraid of the political ramifications. It will be spun as 'cancel culture' and potentially piss off young voters we especially need to turn out.

I liked the previous idea of a transfer of ownership which would grant actual legal protections and oversight.

dillondoyle··on FCC commissioner wants TikTok removed from app stores over spying concerns
We're fighting and voting to save ourselves. It can be messy.

But we actually have the rights & ability to change governments who threaten our freedom.

dillondoyle··on FCC commissioner wants TikTok removed from app stores over spying concerns
TSMC

But if we're not being sardonic a holes, we should be fighting with a Democratic and free government against an autocratic dictatorship whose stated goals are to restore the 'righteous' historical vision of China as the center of the world (it's even the name as far as what I've read, not a speaker of the language: 中国).

Not only is it critical geopolitically and militarily (as in ability to control important & huge swaths of seal / trade routes), ceding ground or worse not putting up a fight at all, would be the death knell of the push for more liberal governments and more freedom.

As always on any topic of Xi or CCP there are a whole bunch of 'but whatabout america.' It's just tiring.

That's where lives could be saved. Except probably more focused on dose & adulteration.

For instance a small container that would darken (like a 'spoon' that would be used to mix/shoot). Darker = higher doses/stronger opioids. A yellow dot for fent.

Pills too except you don't want to have to sacrifice your drugs to test them..

Maybe STD isn't the right term. Intimate contact spread? IDK what else to call it. but the trend is pretty clear.

On the same hand it seems pretty unlikely that bedsheets are causing more infections than sex or hookups. Though the two are closely related ;)

dillondoyle··on Monkeypox outbreak in U.S. is bigger than the CDC reports. Testing is 'abysmal'
Lol I don't think I'm patient zero. Trying to give benefit of doubt given the forum, but man that sounds not so great...

Can't deny it's not spreading in this community. quickly.

Sure we get tested far more and that contributes to the reporting for sure.

But symptomatic patients very clear to know if infected and easy to diagnose.

Question is how much is not obviously symptomatic.

dillondoyle··on Monkeypox outbreak in U.S. is bigger than the CDC reports. Testing is 'abysmal'
MSM (men who have sex with me) mostly right now. Seems like it's just a new STD, but perhaps someone has reading/research showing it's spreading at any significant scale further than that.

Hopefully we handle it better than we did HIV

Also it's pride right now sooo... Just like Chinese New Year couldn't have picked a more opportune time.

dillondoyle··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
Some texas-style rigmarole.

I'm genuinely asking as I'm not an attorney.

My guess would be something like give each citizens in __ state the power to sue __ for assisting someone to commit a "murder" or "crime of life," whatever insane definition they put into law.

Making "civil suits by private citizens the exclusive avenue of enforcement."

And grants a bounty to encourage this.

Further placing 100% of the burden on the person being sued to prove their innocence (and pay legal fees); doesn't matter the uber driver was just dropping someone off at the airport. Whereas the state would have to prove the crime.

it's the threat, the time, the money, and the inconvenience which creates the deterrence & fear that they want.

No matter how baseless it might be, this whole 'gotcha' is that the Supreme Court won't intervene because - and this is where legal understanding could have nuances - each victim is unique (person being sued civily), and that the relief would be from unique individuals and not the state. SCOTUS "ruling that the providers could not bring suit against the classes of state judges and clerks or the state Attorney General"

American's just don't like taxes. When explained that the system is cheaper, their net costs would be the same or lower, it still has solid support.

the problem again is the 'haves' (who also tend to vote a lot more) are the ones who see themselves as losing and gaining a tax.

if it's employer paid for and you don't even know the true value it's hard to see it as comp

dillondoyle··on Google says US employees can relocate to states with abortion rights
I can't believe I'm responding to this.

A company with almost 60k employees, printing billions in cash profit a quarter, isn't real?!

Somehow they tricked giant corporations and tons of small ad buyers into spending their money?

They took a hit because of no/negative in some metric user growth.

more important in my mind is Apple's changes makes what used to be best value possible direct response advertising less or even not profitable. I've moved ad spend out because of this and longer term it's the bigger issue imho.

And yes, I can track that it is in fact real money from real people in a greater amount than I spent on the ads.

Sure but I think the thrust of OP is correct.

single payer alone is close to 70% now.

medicare itself is very very popular in that age group.

People are easily scared and those that already have good care are afraid of losing it. Look at death panels.

but the general idea of healthcare as a fundamental right and a national system of health are very popular.
