dilawar··on Japanese police arrest man for tampering with Pokémon Violet save data
Or just police is bored because crime rate is low? They may have quota to fill to justify their job?!
dilawar··on The DDoS attack of academic bullshit
This is from a blog I follow.

> University students have average intelligence according to Uttl et al. They suggest the following consequences: First, universities and professors need to realize that students are no longer extraordinary but merely average, and have to adjust curricula and academic standards. Second, employers can no longer rely on applicants with university degrees to be more capable or smarter than those without degrees. Third, students need to realize that acceptance into university is no longer an invitation to join an elite group.

dilawar··on Rotz: Cross platform dotfile manager written in Rust
Thanks. I shortlisted Chezmoi. Though I often run into git-related issues with merge conflict, it looks like it has the most brain-share in the community.
dilawar··on India’s electric rickshaws
> No one actually buys 2 wheeler EVs - you can save $1-2k more and buy a luxury 2 wheeler like a KTM Super Duke

2 wheeler EV is not a rare sight in Bangalore. Probably 1 in 200 two wheelers is EV in my neighborhood.

dilawar··on Rotz: Cross platform dotfile manager written in Rust
What a coincidence. I was looking at awesome dotfiles on GitHub. I started thinking of jumping onto the "manage dotfile" bandwagon after reading today's LWN note on the GNU Stow release. I shortlisted Chezmoi and Comtrya to play with. Then I saw this.

By purchase parity, 1 dollar is about 23 rupees while exchange rate is around 80. So roughly 4x multiplier is needed to .

In purchase parity, it's 27 billions dollar vs 200-300 billion of California. Still 10x less.

I wanted to complain about bangalore garbage and traffic but it will take too much space.

dilawar··on Based: Simple linear attention language models
True. And it's scaling down properties are much better than any other network I've played with (not an expert). I could run MNIST benchmark on a ESP32 board.

I also liked the Convex Concave trick in the paper. The guarantee that at every step you are closer to the minima is very nice.

"if you decide to die poor, a great many things can be done with your life". Heard it from a friend whose thesis advisor loved to say it occassionally.

dilawar··on Top Harvard Cancer researchers accused of scientific fraud; 37 studies affected
> Despite finding false data and manipulated images, Rollins pressed that it doesn't necessarily mean that scientific misconduct occurred and the institute has not yet made such a determination. The "presence of image discrepancies in a paper is not evidence of an author's intent to deceive," Rollins wrote. "That conclusion can only be drawn after a careful, fact-based examination which is an integral part of our response. Our experience is that errors are often unintentional and do not rise to the level of misconduct."

I m scratching my head! And I am from India.

dilawar··on A 2024 Plea for Lean Software
I just downloaded a freshly minted app from Notion called Notion calendar. It looks beautiful, and it's download size is 84Mb! Most likely an electron app.

Someone mentions temperature in the context of algorithms, can't stop thinking, cool, simulated annealing. Haven't seen temperature used in any other family of algo before this.

Some decent pointers that one can keep in mind as rule of thumb. Would love to read some comments that says hey we tried exactly the same but...
dilawar··on Chisel: A Modern Hardware Design Language
Nice. BlueSpec (Haskell based) was open sourced few years ago. I wonder how it compares with BlueSpec.
dilawar··on Chisel: A Modern Hardware Design Language
myhdl is python based but I don't think it's been developed anymore.
dilawar··on 2023: Focusing on a single product pays off
Said a very successful person who can afford to say no to almost everything.
dilawar··on Japan to crack down on Apple and Google app store monopolies
I read that apple case was heard by a judge and Google case by a jury. Apparently a jury tends to be less rigorous at interpretation of laws than a judge?! Not surprising (I saw the movie 8 (or 12) angry men).
dilawar··on What It's Like to Be a Bee
Purkinje neurons are found in mammals as well. Huge branches and a lots of input. This paragraph is odd.

This elaborate structures of neurons is a big reason why many neuroscientist don't like point neurons artitecture. Personally I don't think this structure can be approximated by a later or point neurons -- at least not without a significant cost. After reading "More Is Different" I am more open to the idea that substrate matter quite a lot.

dilawar··on Self-teaching, spaced repetition, and why books don't work
> Trying to figure out the thing without any help, or very little help, at each step of the above. This sounds pointless, but it actually works really well

I found it to be very effective though time consuming. Even if you don't figure out the solution, when you read other solution later, everything just clicks.

dilawar··on YouTube doesn't want to take down scam ads
Many Google services in India openly promote/advertise astrologers and other related scams. This always leaves a bad taste in my mouth even if it legal.
dilawar··on Ask HN: Can we do better than Git for version control?
git : version control :: vim : editors

There is definately scope for a beginner friendly UI/UX. Julia Evans has a post lately about confusing aspect of git. Ability to version control large files (like git-lfs) would be a nice addition.

I doubt it. At minimum, chatgpt needs to run away from painful stimuli (given a choice).
dilawar··on PysimpleGUI
Lol. He is definitely not young as in inexperienced coder. He will definitely not going to win awards for barely sufficient documentation and docs organisation. Dude got a personality.

I've followed the project when I was in college and used it in my personal project.

dilawar··on PysimpleGUI
Not to answer your question but it brings back some nice memories. I was in college when author started this project. He worked a lot on it. After a few years, he stopped and archived the project. Looks like it's back again. Nice!

I used it in all my college demo and small projects and I loved it. The most complex GUI that I made was a oscilloscope frontend for lab-made signal recorder. It is indeed a simplegui library.

dilawar··on An Open Letter to the Python Software Foundation
True but I'd have appreciated if they said no to the grant earlier.

I hope Python Africa has learnt it lesson and will find ways to manage resources locally. That the only way to succeed in long run.
