dilawar··on If AI seems smarter, it's thanks to smarter human trainers
I think many people like to believe that solving puzzles will somehow make them better at combinatorics. Lateral skill transfer in non-motor skills e.g. office works, academics works etc may not be any better than motor skills. It's easier to convince people that playing soccer everyday wouldn't make them any better at cricket, or even hockey.
dilawar··on Attracting and Retaining Debian Contributors
For openSuSe, their open build service is awesome. You can create packages in your personal repos and submit to the official repo in one click. Though zypper (suse package manager) download packages serially and takes a lot of time during upgrades.
dilawar··on Averaging is a convenient fiction of neuroscience
In many, perhaps most, signalling pathways, amplitude doesn't matter much (it does at log-scale). Given how well we control temperature and therefore rate of the reaction, it makes sense to use timing to fight off the noise.
dilawar··on In 1870, Lord Rayleigh used oil and water to calculate the size of molecules
I went to a talk by a very old physicist. At the end of his talk, he said, recalling from memory, all of the great experiments of the past were done by nothing. If an experiment costs more than $100, I am out.

His setup has mud in a jar and bacteria in it which you can see with a simple microscope or handheld lens.

dilawar··on America's best-paid CEOs have the worst-paid employees
Probably the problem here is: pay gold and get Gorilla
dilawar··on How does cosine similarity work?
Hmmm.. I heard in a conference that most well understood engineering principles or theories have a neat geometric interpretation. Personally I find a theory with geometric interpretation far easier to grasp. On the other hand, the higher dimensions geometry confuses me a lot: most random sparse vectors are orthogonal to each other, and most volumes of a sphere in that dimension are concentrated in a place.
dilawar··on Anarchy in Sudan has spawned the world’s worst famine in 40 years
Meh. We had the great Bengal famine under British rule. And none of it was due to lack of this and that.

Amrtya Sen "Nobel" in economics was related to this.

dilawar··on Crows are even smarter than we thought
Here are a few cultures bits about crows from a village in Northern India.

- If a crows is sitting near your house and screaming, you are about to get guests or visitors.

- During monsoon time, a whole month is devoted to feed your ancestors. We put food out on leafs (banana is hard to find, peepal or turai squash leaf does the job). It's mostly eaten by crows. It is believed that ancestors visit you back as crows.

I never saw local crows doing extraordinary "smart things". They were very good at stealing food: especially butter during winter. But never heard about a crow opening a latch.

While nesting, they will dip a dry branch in water to make it soft so that they can bend it without breaking when making nest.

I never liked crows as kids. They would often kill small squirrels (chipmunks rather) and sparrows whom I liked very much -- though rarely.

dilawar··on So you want to build an embedded Linux system?
Excellent blog! Love the fact that a great amount of background information is added to the article. Can be read as an "introduction to embedded programming" chapter but not as boring as you find in textbooks.
dilawar··on Flaw has Microsoft Authenticator overwriting MFA accounts, locking users out
This is nothing.

My bank account (HDFC india) starts with 00. Dare send it to any accounting person who will copy paste it into an excel sheet and bang.. the prefix 00 is gone. Now they will complain that your account details are wrong. Took me a few months to figure out what was really going on.

dilawar··on Poetry was an official Olympic event
Also cricket. It's coming back to the Olympics next time though.

The last time (and only one time) was in 1900 in Paris. Only two teams participated: one was France and the other of course Britain.

dilawar··on Recent Performance Improvements in Function Calls in CPython
I really really want nim to catch up. It's a lovely language. I've used it for small projects and it is great but I couldn't use it for anything complex that requires third-party libraries. The ecosystem is just not there.

I wonder what is stopping community mindshare?

dilawar··on Japan stocks plunge as much as 7% as Asia shares extend sell-off
This explains many confusing things about Indian markets. Is there a place/book you recommend I can learn about it a bit more?
dilawar··on The New Internet
Thanks for pointing this out. It's hard to communicate ipv4 and I dread even reading ipv6.

I don't understand why they didn't just add two or four more fields to ipv4 e.g. 0.91.127.0.0.1 is localhost where 0.91 can be omitted in the local context.

PS: I don't understand how networking works. Feels very very complex and full of jargons.

dilawar··on Big Tech says AI is booming. Wall Street is starting to see a bubble
There is an infinite amount of work in the future. Some jobs may become redundant because of AI but I don't see anyone becoming less busier.
dilawar··on Is OpenSUSE at Crossroads?
I got to use susestudio only for a few months and I was in love. Not sure why they killed it. There is simply nothing like that out there that I know of. Docker et al are great but susestudio did much more. I used it to create an installer for a summer course with the required tool and it just worked.
dilawar··on Fitting an elephant with four non-zero parameters
Hmm..

Hodgin and Huxley did ground-breaking work on squid's giant axon and modelled neural activity. They had multiple parameters extracted from 'curve fitting' of recorded potential and injected currents which were much later mapped to sodium channels. Similarly, another process to potassium channels.

I woudnt worry too much having multiple parameters -- even four when 3 can't just explain the model.

dilawar··on Rye: A Hassle-Free Python Experience
> Python feel like cargo

I am sold. Was thinking of trying out pixie after poetry took whole day and still couldn't resolve deps.

Looks like there are more python package managers that chat apps from Google ?

dilawar··on Supreme Court overturns 40-year-old "Chevron deference" doctrine
>Personally, I would trust the nations top lawyers more than most of the congress members we have. However, it doesn't take much imagination to see the new issues that could arise)

Good luck with this.

At least these corrupt politicians come to face the music every four years.

dilawar··on Arvind has died
He probably means northern part of India. Surnames are more emphasised in the South than North.

I think it started when British started asking for surnames in job application in colonial India. South Indiana took their birthplace as surname along with caste name. In North, Singh and Kumar were used as surnames. Caste names became quite popular in late 20th century.

Before British, I am not sure if surnames were common anywhere in India. Would be a lovely study in history.

dilawar··on The Fourth Quadrant: A map of the limits of statistics
A very long article. I read a bit and it's interesting.

Would have preferred a much shorter version. Also, couldn't find the quadrants during my quick scrolling.

dilawar··on Fungus breaks down ocean plastic
Imagine bacteria and fungi breaking down all the plastic into CO2. Don't know which is lesser evil: plastic as it remaining in the environment or more CO2 but less plastic?
dilawar··on AI in software engineering at Google: Progress and the path ahead
Something akin to `std::optional` would have been great. These days, folks don't come to C++ from C and are not used to such under-the-hood tricks.

The committee decided that since the reference can't be null, therefore, we'll insert something into the map when someone "query" for a key. Perhaps two mistakes can make a right!! It is hard to make peace with it when you are used to a better alternative.

dilawar··on AI in software engineering at Google: Progress and the path ahead
I never found my experience that simple. Even at times when I was paying attention which is always in short supply when you need it most.

Libraries are biggest pain point. You don't know what a function really doing unless you have used it before yourself. Docs are not always helpful even when you read them.

Lot of assumptions that may not be totally wrong but not right also. In c++, using [] on a map to access an element is really really dangerous if you haven't read the docs carefully and assumes that it does what you believe it should do.

dilawar··on Free time, curiosity and playfulness has led to young orcas bumping boats
A few days ago, onion published a list of interviews with orcas. Only a few of them were motivated by TicTok.
dilawar··on Cloudflare took down our website
I had to search for it. I was under the impression that HN removed it for some reason.

Does HN has stake in cloudflare?!

dilawar··on Israel shuts down local Al Jazeera offices
Well, Israel has also funded Hamas for years!
dilawar··on A Mathematical Theory of Communication [pdf]
I find it incredible how "simple" were his theories and enormous impact they had. Is there anyone else who developed such seemingly "simple" theories?
dilawar··on Sunlight and Vitamin D (2013)
+1.

Also a few animals sweat like us. We are indeed not built to sit in one place.

Sweating:depression::sunlight:infection.

dilawar··on Ceefax Simulator
My coworker 4y old son have never seen money exchanged at shops since UPI has become so prevalent in India. He would just pick things at shop and walk. He didn't relate scanning QR codes with exchange.

I should ask my coworker if he tried explaining physical money to him and how he reacted to the idea.
