digsy··on Judge rules that student loan debt is dischargeable in bankruptcy
>The current situation of 70k a year college is predatory, but a student accepting that cost should be smart enough to know what that means.

Many students who accept these loans are 17-18 years old. Expecting children to make solid financial decisions regarding hundreds of thousands of dollars is optimistic at best.

digsy··on Major union launches campaign to organize video game and tech workers
Video games are part tech, part art and part storytelling. So in a sense they are closer to movies than pure software.

That distinction is where some of the wish for credit comes from I believe.

digsy··on Half of us have quit our job because of a bad boss (2015)
>Unfortunately very few of these may actually relate to management but at some point you reach that level of seniority and then the company says "here's a team, I'm sure you'll be fine" and leaves it at that very little training or coaching you just now have to learn on the job.

Thats my experience.

Being a manager of role x is not the same as being in role x.

Becoming a manager is a career change.

What kind of technical due diligence did you do?

I'm wondering if machine learning could be used for this.

digsy··on Skylon’s SABRE Engine Passes a Big Test
>I suspect the biggest difference between these companies is not talent or vision, but sens of urgency

Well that and the SABRE engine is a completely new design and SpaceXs engines are based on engines created in the 1960s and refined since then.

Its comparing apples and oranges.

digsy··on When Card Shops Play Dirty, Consumers Win
A number of banks now allow you to suspend credit cards via a secure app [1] (username/password required).

You then un-suspend the card when you want to do it and its near real-time.

Its not quite what you asked for but functionally its very close.

digsy··on Ask HN: How many of you have been impacted by a layoff?
>Me and my team delivered a high frequency trading platform. Ahead of schedule, and better performance than requested.

Sounds like you have the startings of your own business there.

digsy··on Employers Used Facebook to Keep Women and Older Workers from Seeing Job Ads
Targeted ads when it comes to housing (AKA redlining) are illegal under Fair Housing Act of 1968.

digsy··on Software Engineering Grads Lack the Skills Startups Need
>I'm not sure why some think that a university degree should mean you're ready to be an effective professional engineer from day 1, let alone year 3.

Maybe its an excuse and the companies who say that just dont want to pay for training.

digsy··on Legit-Looking iPhone Lightning Cables Will Hijack Your Computer
I saw Kevin Mitnik (FBIs most wanted hacker in the 1990s) at a conference plug one of these into laptop with a fully patched version of Windows 10 and one of the very common security suite of apps.

The laptop was completely compromised in seconds.

From a remote laptop, he had complete access to the target machines full filesystem, started the webcam and turned on the microphone without any notifications to the target user and connected a bluetooth hard drive remotely.

And this was using a rogue cable that he just bought off ebay.

I was honestly shocked at how easy it would be to compromise someones machine. I'll never look at a USB cable the same way.

digsy··on Legit-Looking iPhone Lightning Cables Will Hijack Your Computer
They block (or just dont have) the USB data pins - so all it can do is draw power.
digsy··on What Does a Coder Do If They Can't Type?
Also same boat.

I've found that a mix of proper ergonomics, regular breaks, CBD oil (for inflammation), wrist braces and physical therapy exercises can do a lot of good.

digsy··on Companies Use Borrowed Billions to Buy Back Stock, Not to Invest
Maybe the educated folks on HN couldnt expect anything else.

But most people believed the current Administrations reasoning, which was that the tax cut would benefit them by stimulating the economy (eg trickle down economics), which to educated people was obvious BS.

digsy··on Holidays are good for workers and companies alike
AFAIK, every state in the US is an at-will state. That means you can be terminated at any time, with very few exceptions.

So anytime the company is trying to force you to do something, you have to decide if resisting is worth making yourself an easy target.

digsy··on The Fed is getting into the Real-Time payments business
The Fed has been using same day ACH (which was really 1/2 day settlement) since 2016.

And they were sending signals pretty soon after the launch that they were wanted real-time payments.

I believe that pre-dates Libra but quite some time.

digsy··on FBI Says QAnon, Internet Conspiracy Theorists Are National Security Threats
Maybe they were canaries in the coal mine of free speech but now some of them have been co-opted to do real arm e.g. Russian trolls pushing anti-vax memes [1].

digsy··on Notifica – an app for if you're at risk of being detained by ICE agents
ICE have been detaining and deporting legal aliens. Being cautious as an immigrant is just a sensible precaution at this point.
digsy··on FBI, ICE using state driver’s license photos for facial-recognition searches
I think your example is different to this scenario as your friend will have submitted many pics to VK so they have decent training set for her face.

Whereas the DMV only has 1 picture of a suspect so it will result in more false positives.

digsy··on Reddit has quarantined /r/The_Donald
In the thread that allegedly lead to the ban (you can see an archived version here - http://archive.is/vpvb4), The_Donald users post comments like:

- 'get a rope' - 'So, firing squad time right?' - 'If he is not fired for this then wtf do we do next? Take matters into our own hands?'

What was Reddit supposed to do? Tolerate death threats on its platform? Then get sued if the person gets murdered?

And this isnt an isolated example.

digsy··on Musk to review all of Tesla's expenses in new cost cutting plan
The issue isn't the $100 limit - the issue is having the CEO give approval.

I would expect that such a small amount would be approved by someone much closer to the engineers on the hierarchy.

Not to mention what a poor use of the CEOs time!

The point of mentioning blockers at the meeting is to put pressure on the person who is the source of the blockage.

In an ideal world this isnt needed, but many people need public reminders or prodding to unblock.
