I don’t understand this, can you explain or am I missing something?

dieselgate··on A Closer Look at Australopithecus Africanus
I watched the Herzog doc “Cave of Forgotten Dreams” [0] a few weeks ago and highly recommend it (about cave art ~30~15kya; borrowed the dvd from local library). There are some goofy bits but overall is amazing. My favorite part is how there are different paintings in the same cave separated by around 4k years — some “tracing” the previous paintings. It reminds me how Ancient Egypt had such a long history there were Egyptologists within ancient Egypt. [1]

It seems like wet timing belts were common in europe among more auto makers than Ford, not that I am vouching for them in any capacity.

I understand your argument for people who pursue research degrees but there are plenty of non-research professional programs that people should be encouraged to pursue if relevant for their goals. E.g. masters in teaching
dieselgate··on Ask HN: What vendor you'd switch out if a better option was available?
Switched from Spotify to Deezer. I prefer Slack to alternatives, Teams is miserable.
dieselgate··on Creatine uptake enhances antitumor immunity
Maybe glucosamine, it’s pretty cheap and accessible.
dieselgate··on Ask HN: What job boards are good these days?
Head hunters are great if you're at the right place at the right time. But applying to them is a more difficult ROI than passively getting lucky.

Thanks for the recommendation, hiring.cafe seems pretty good on first look and just made an account. I like how their mission is to "kill" indeed and linkedin. Had to revisit this thread after seeing it yesterday to refresh my memory after initially going to "coffeejobs.com" which is... not the correct destination.

I always just want to know how much of X or Y is on hand when I’m physically out and at the grocer. You can just buy another but that usually leads to folks storing 5 bottles of ketchup or whatever

Can you possibly elaborate on the timing belt in oil? I’ve only known of dry timing belts or lubricated timing chains/gears

To be fair mentioning Nike is kind of a straw man here — unless being explicit with the model/style. They manufacturer to many different price points, more than an auto maker.

The gig workers are still suckers because gig work sucks. But yes the service is most sensible for higher paid consumers.
dieselgate··on Transit rewards
I'm from the Bay and no longer live there but for how massive the region (functionally: Santa Rosa to Santa Cruz; SF to Antioch+) is the public transit is pretty good. Obviously not perfect and a lot of room for improvement.

I've spoken with old timers who would talk about the days before the Richmond-San Rafael bridge, to name one piece of the puzzle.

dieselgate··on LinkedIn is a terrible quality website
Seems like boiling a frog to me and the users/people haven't started to jump out yet. The website is horrible but basically everyone is still on it because of FOMO or something.

I do not have a linkedin account.

dieselgate··on What AI-Native Looks Like
I read the article and it sounds kinda-sorta good at face value but the more I read and look into readplace.com the less things make sense and the more "ick" grows. Oh well just a puff piece... It's a big pet peeve of mine when someone uses a "CEO" title where it's probably very likely there's no Board or any other officers (or is a side project).

Author comes off as diligent, intelligent and dedicated... but might gain some credibility by having real humans read and proof the copy.

I get the point but these numbers are hyperbole and do not happen in real life.

> I'm pretty sure we would find an overall increase in actually useful apps

I think you're probably right but at what point does it become diminishing returns? I have observed the app market to be overly saturated for years and rarely download something other than a mobile-banking update.

Super interesting read

dieselgate··on I stopped drinking the AI Kool-Aid
I'm glad for Author to write on the subject but think the article was tough to get through due to undeveloped ideas and too many cliches. I was additionally confused where the Kool Aid thing was going because the "drinking it" phrase originates from LSD/acid tests--mentioned in the wiki [1] page but not the post.

Where do we go from here and what is the intermediate ground of leveraging LLMs and Agentic AI? It's odd for me to read about someone going "all in" on AI--to the point of using it for email with humans--and then having a massive reversal.

I think this is a really interesting case study and temporal snapshot of where we are with AI technologies. I have always been wary|skeptical|cynical of the technology and this is affirming but also just confusing.

dieselgate··on Rate limits on GitLab.com are changing

I'm not familiar with graphql but what would make something "invoke git", is it a technical thing or hyperbole?

dieselgate··on Every Fucking Website (2020)
Thank you for the follow up link, it brings up good points. I think the 1st Amendment angle is too quickly brushed off by the author and not sure how this would be settled in a legal dispute--especially considering the means and depth of advertising and tech companies. The article is worth reading and great food for thought. Isn't this a part of legally excluding under-18s from using social media?
dieselgate··on Would you join an adults only social media site?
Good luck, i'm sure people might be interested in using the site. How do you verify age? Isn't that a big hot button topic currently with age verification for limiting youths from viewing social media? It seems there is a lot of pushback from ID verification
dieselgate··on Would you join an adults only social media site?
"Adult-only" typically has certain connotations that are NSFW
