diegoholiveira··on Why a 224-Year-Old Human Heart Is Touring Brazil
It was a different time. It’s easy to misjudge the past without fully understanding the context of that time.
diegoholiveira··on Why a 224-Year-Old Human Heart Is Touring Brazil
> Thanks to him and his son, Brazil was the last country to abolish slavery.

Dom Pedro I tried to abolish the slavery in the very beginning of our independence. What stop him? The Congress. And he respected the congress because he wasn’t a dictator. The same thing happened with Dom Pedro II, who spent his life trying to end slavery.

People think that a monarch can do whatever he wants, but this is not true. Only dictators can do whatever they want.

diegoholiveira··on Spain will introduce free train travel
The myth of free stuff. Love it.
diegoholiveira··on Why Ruby Is More Readable Than Python
Currently I’m working in a large ruby codebase and previously I was working with Python and Go. Until this moment, I do prefer Python.
diegoholiveira··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
Yes, the Arabs keep some, Europeans keep others. That’s why I use the word “much” in the beginning of my statement.
diegoholiveira··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
> People don't tell you they lost their faith. They just stop following their code of ethics that was bound to it.

Not sure if this is true. Most Western values came from Christianity, even though the society today is not as religious as it was in the past.

diegoholiveira··on The SQLite Code of Ethics
> Or Ancient Greece (and later Rome), some 500 years before the monasteries.

And we know this because monasteries kept a large army of monks guarding the knowledge so that it would one day serve society.

diegoholiveira··on Calling for Antitrust Reform
That’s a hypothesis explored by some authors, like here: https://www.libertarianism.org/publications/essays/big-busin...
diegoholiveira··on Keep the web free, say no to Web3 (2021)
The web is not free. You pay with your data and ads.
diegoholiveira··on Among Europe’s Ex-Royals
> They are not really monarchies, they are democracies with a small amount of monarchic elements.

The king is the head of state, so how this is not a monarchy?

> Monarchy in my understanding implies the rule of the monarch.

There are two types of monarchies:

- constitucional, like belgium, netherlands, norway and japan

- absolute: saudi arabia and the vatican city.

diegoholiveira··on Among Europe’s Ex-Royals
> The advantage of democracy, in theory, is that there is less violence to choose who is the next ruler... That said our current president was stabbed during elections, a former president was in prison for a while, and politicians here have a knack of having very weird deaths in inopportune moments...

I think you wanna say “the advantage of a republic” because a monarchy doesn’t mean lack of democracy. Many europeans countries are a monarchy and a democracy.

Monarchy and Republic are one thing. Democracy and Dictatorship is another thing.

Btw, great explanation about Dom Pedro II, many scholars call him “the magnanimous” and one of the best imperator of the modern times.

diegoholiveira··on Ask HN: What happened to Twitter poison pill?
51% of valid votes is a magic number that allows you to do basically anything (including screwing the other 49%).
diegoholiveira··on Ask HN: Do you believe in GNU's Free Software?
I believe in open source but not in free software. Keep a software its not easy and we should pay for it. But the source code must always be open. That’s my 2 cents.
diegoholiveira··on JsonLogic
I did a rules engine to the company that I work based in this specification, but using go language. It is a very successful project because our clients can create rules without tech people around in our frontend, it's very easy to translate our rules into json and store it.

I even did a library to implement it in go language: https://github.com/diegoholiveira/jsonlogic

diegoholiveira··on Managing Dotfiles with GNU Stow (2016)
I'll take a look. Thanks :)
diegoholiveira··on Managing Dotfiles with GNU Stow (2016)
I use GNU Stow to manage my dotfiles and it's awesome because with Stow and Brew, I could create a script that setup everything in my machine from scratch, with one command. If anyone wants to take a look, it's here: https://GitHub.com/diegoholiveira/dotfiles
diegoholiveira··on The digital currencies that matter
People will find a way to build a parallel monetary system, for sure.
diegoholiveira··on Democrats to introduce legislation to expand Supreme Court
> So the supreme court will become a parliament.

It already is.

diegoholiveira··on Justice at Spotify
A genuine question: how much of Spotify royalty payments goes to the artist? I mean, many of them have agencies that get a cut of this money, or I'm wrong?

I'm asking this because it could improve the artists situations if they could get the royalty directly without a middleman? Probably someone already did a research in this direction.

diegoholiveira··on It’s time to free ourselves from ‘Big Tech’ monopoly
Not at all. A small government can be strong while applying the laws.
diegoholiveira··on It’s time to free ourselves from ‘Big Tech’ monopoly
> The U.S. keeps consolidating, the "spin" is that it's all about lower costs to the consumer by allowing "scale", when it reality it's just about monopoly power and the ultra rich getting richer and more powerful.

This is happen all over the world, it's not an American thing.

> A two party government.

Doesn't matter if the number of parties is 2 or 20. The problem is: the government doesn't have limits.

Two things we urgently need, IMO: - An improved and very aggressive antitrust law. - Dramatically reduce what a government can or can't do.

Without those two things, I don't hold too much hope of living in a free world.

diegoholiveira··on Global debt soars to 356% of GDP
> For money to be lent out it's coming from somewhere where the money is existing

Not true. Governments around the world are just using money that doesn't exists, an example is the new economic rescue package. This kind of money, is great to made rich people richer.

diegoholiveira··on The Queen has more power over British law than we thought
Everyone want someone to rule over them, except, perhaps, the libertarians.

Any bureaucrat of any government have more power in your life than you think. And over time, we're giving them more and more power to regulate our lifes. (I'm not even talking about politicians here, they're more powerful than any absolutist king of the history).

diegoholiveira··on Europe’s telcos want ‘open’ 5G networks
> and will get nationalized again

IMO, this would be a bad move. Let them die. Voice and text over the internet is here to stay. In the last two years I didn't a single phone call thanks to WhatsApp, Signal and Instagram.

diegoholiveira··on Giant leak exposes data from almost all Brazilians
> The article talks about data of real people (not companies), but doesn't say what leaked about them.

Personal data (CPF, Birth day and so on), credit scores, social class, acquisitive power, and other informations that a company specialised in credit score have. (the leak is probably from a credit score company).

diegoholiveira··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
I do agree 100% with you. That's why I do think we need to decrease the power of the state and also the power of the corporations using a modern antitrust law. If they power continues to grow, we'll live in a totalitarian state, dictate by politicians and corporations together.
diegoholiveira··on How Silicon Valley destroyed Parler
This power could be used to sensor you in the future. This power could be put in the hands of a group of people who thinks completely different from you.
diegoholiveira··on St. Benedict’s Rule for Monasteries (516)
Those rules help the Church preserve the ancient knowledge until Gutenberg. As a Catholic, I'm devout of St. Benedict because the creation of monasteries have a huge impact of the human knowledge.
diegoholiveira··on Why are you so critical of Facebook but not the other big tech companies?
The OP is wrong: Facebook business model can change. What about being paid and completely remove the ads business?

IMO, the saddest thing it's our addiction to free stuff. An internet without ads would be an amazing place.

diegoholiveira··on Apple’s longtime supplier accused of using forced labor in China
