didntreadarticl··on Microsoft Kosmos-1: A Multimodal Large Language Model
Sure I would expect it to improve. But it was a bit fishy how 'it took an IQ test!' is in all the highlights but then they mumble quietly about the score that it actually got and hope no-one is listening to that bit.

Its notable that it was able to attempt it at all I suppose.

didntreadarticl··on Microsoft Kosmos-1: A Multimodal Large Language Model
Its crap at the visual Raven IQ test though, it scores 22% vs an algorithm that takes random guesses scoring 17%.
didntreadarticl··on Report: U.S. pedestrian death rate increased during COVID
Now hang on a minute

Really well earned use of 'hang on' there, sounds like the article is bollocks

We're starting by pulling together a lot of the teams working on generative AI across the company into one group

"We will start by interrupting all of the initiatives currently in motion to introduce new layers of management and bureaucracy"

Maybe it will pay off.

Senior Management going to Senior Manage

didntreadarticl··on Plutonium: The most dangerous substance known to man?
I have worked in a plant where I had half a critical mass in this hand, barehanded and dressed in street clothes, and half in this hand, wearing a lab coat

So they were only wearing a lab coat on one half of their body? I'm confused.

didntreadarticl··on Ask HN: Are subscriptions the doom of the tech sector?
I'm seeing a lot of basic kids apps on ipads that should just be 'pay once' but instead its a bullshit subscription specifically because they know mum and dad will forget about it and keep paying for months after the kid has stopped using the app
didntreadarticl··on ‘Old-school union busting’: how US corps are quashing the new wave of organizing
Thanks, so that explains why French 'Union' membership was so low in this graph: https://www.forbes.com/sites/niallmccarthy/2021/03/30/how-us... ... its because they have something else instead
didntreadarticl··on Open source implementation for LLaMA-based ChatGPT
Have we got any details on the benchmarks that show LLaMa's 13B architecture outperforming GPT-3? Because that seems kindsof fantastical. Is it just a product of a very specific benchmark or does it reflect real world performance?

I am just interested in what they want and how effective the process is at getting it

You can compare Europe to the USA to see that

didntreadarticl··on How confusion spreads and becomes engrained (2017)
So relieved to see this comment at the top. After reading OPs second paragraph I was thinking oh, so by 'confusion' he actually means people with different opinions from him

Taken as a list of biases, the article is useful. It never hurts to be reminded about all the different ways we can be led astray. But the problem is, the list of 'mitigations' boils down to become an investigative journalist who researches _everything_ using multiple viewpoints from primary sources, surrounds themselves with people who disagree with them and engages them in lively dialogue, and remains open minded and neutral about everything until the end of time

Ain't nobody got time for that

We have a limited about of time and energy and need to decide where to spend it. Sometimes it might be more efficient to take received wisdom and run with it rather than launch a research project twenty times a day

Dapper! I used it a while back and it was a single class that bundled query results straight into a list of objects by emitting low level CLR bytecode

Looks like its expanded a little since then

One of the only well known sites to do so, I think?

didntreadarticl··on Disqualified from a National Web Design Competition for Using GitHub
People are dissecting the minutiae of the rules and the role of github but at the end of the day its bananas that some kids got banned from a 21st century web competition for using the proper tools.

edit: As a consolation prize HNers could follow the OP and his team-mates on medium or elsewhere

Hi Shiloh, as a consolation for the competition, what sites can HNers follow you and your team-mates on? Do you have a twitter for tech stuff?

didntreadarticl··on People for the Ethical Treatment of Reinforcement Learners
I've been thinking that within a decade or so you'll probably have quite sophisticated AI characters in computer games, who respond in realistic ways and seem to be genuine inhabitants of the game world.

And people will mistreat them, and other people will feel uneasy about that, because the suffering will seem very real.

Because ultimately philosophical arguments about whats actually going on inside wont matter, if people are mistreating entities that have very realistic simulations of suffering, that will be enough to spur action.

e.g. I can imagine use of AIs above a certain sophistication in video games being banned.

And then a few steps beyond that is a movement for civil rights for AIs

didntreadarticl··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
The strong ideological/political current is the status quo that I referred to previously
didntreadarticl··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
There's more overlap between them than you realise, if you compare what counts as mainstream 'left' and 'right' in the USA vs Europe
didntreadarticl··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
I would point to the general way that in the USA the balance of rights is tipped away from people and towards corporations, e.g. very little sick pay, very little paid leave, very little parental leave, very few rights for employees, Healthcare provided at the whims of employers and insurance companies. etc
didntreadarticl··on Half of Americans now believe that news organizations deliberately mislead them
American news organisations are all paid for by advertisers who have a vested interest in the status quo
