This is exactly what I use it for. It keeps me working mostly in python, flask, and jinja, which I know a lot better than js. For just doing some background requests and element swapping, it’s absolutely more efficient for me.
dicriseg··on The grid isn’t ready for 300M EVs by 2030
So get it ready. It’s the richest country in the world with profits so large it’s spiking inflation. There are billionaires out the ass. Maybe we can find the money there.
dicriseg··on Iowa governor will sign bill rolling back labor protections for children
Because you can’t actually restrict access to online content. Also, “restricting a child’s ability to work” is a funny way of framing a policy goal of keeping children engaged in education instead of being exploited as cheap labor.
dicriseg··on I wish GPT4 had never happened
I’ve been using RubberDuck to have chatgpt in my ide. Its not perfect but it is pretty great.
dicriseg··on Marie Kondo Gives Up
Yep, that's a good description. And unless you're paying someone to come clean and straighten up (cleaning, organizing, and ongoing maintenance are all different concerns!), there is a large amount of time that you need to trade off in order to do that yourself. Your kids will only be kids for so long, so fuck the constant organizing routine and spend your time with them. Be reactive and just clean up when you need to, and shove things into a closet when people come over or whatever. My kid is almost 11 now, and the worst realization is that I'm way past the half way mark in the time that I have with them at home as my kid. I'll have plenty of time to put my shit away when I'm missing them while they're away at college and then building their own life.

My spouse is a professional organizer. It's a cool field, with a mix of helping people maintain a high end appearance, and also helping others who are literally trying to dig their lives out from the living room. Our home doesn't look like a completed job, though. There will (hopefully) be time for that later.

dicriseg··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
WordPress is my first thought.
dicriseg··on Ask HN: Host a website from a living room in 2022?
The only things I can think of do involve a ups. There are battery banks that support pass through charging but I’m not sure if you’re supposed to use that constantly. A low capacity power strip style ups seems like the next best. Or don’t use a pi at all - if you have an old laptop that you don’t use, that could be the server and it has its own built in ups.

Sorry I don’t know that I’m being helpful here. I had the same issue and just ended up with an ups - but I also ended up plugging my networking rack into it (router, cable modem, switch, nas) as well. We’ve only had one real outage since I set this up, but it kept my network alive for 90 minutes or so and then the power came back up.

dicriseg··on Ask HN: What is the best income stream you have created till date?
I really appreciate the detailed response and the advice. Thank you!
dicriseg··on Ask HN: What is the best income stream you have created till date?
Great landing page. Did you create that yourselves? The one thing I seem to struggle with is creating a nice looking landing page - it's just not something I'm good at. If you used a third party, any chance you'd say who that was?
dicriseg··on How long would society last during a total grid collapse?
If they strongly support Russia, I’ll suggest to you that they aren’t just right-leaning.
dicriseg··on Lufthansa bans AirTags in checked luggage
This is a credit card affiliate marketing blog. Really not a good source for any actual news. I do like their reviews of airline products though.
dicriseg··on A CTO should be technical
Is this your first time managing people as well?
dicriseg··on Ask HN: When did you stop using a printer and why?
It just occurred to me that the other brother printer I bought in like 2004 is still in use at my parents house. These things are tanks.
dicriseg··on Ask HN: When did you stop using a printer and why?
I haven’t. I have a Brother laser printer that’s probably 10 years old now, if not closer to 15. I don’t use it frequently, but it comes in handy occasionally. My wife prints a little more than I do. Toner is cheap and lasts forever. I think I’ve been through 4-5 toner carts and 1 drum replacement.

If it died, I’d get another. As infrequently as I use one, when you need it it’s nice to have.

dicriseg··on Amazon built a new unit to fix its engineering culture
It’s more like, “How would you like to get twice as much done?”

I don’t work at Amazon, but I’m sure there’s plenty for folks to do.

dicriseg··on Framework Ethernet Expansion Card is now available
It looks to me like the RJ45 jack is taller than the expansion card slot, and the depth of the bump is more or less the depth of the RJ45 jack + the space needed to wire it in. I'm not sure what else they could have done to produce something that fits in the expansion slot. You can always just use a USB-C ethernet dongle if you think you're going to disconnect it every time it goes into a bag.

Just looking at it, as long as its manufactured to reasonable tolerances, you'd have to do quite a bit to damage the laptop via the protrusion. I'm not sure how big of a deal this is. I'd just throw it in a bag and not worry about it, protrusion and all.

dicriseg··on Build your career on dirty work
It's good work if you can get it! [0] But most people out there, even software engineers, aren't going to make 320k with minimal effort. I do agree with the overall idea that you should define "enough" for yourself, and slow down to enjoy life once you get there.

dicriseg··on Heroku to discontinue free product plans and delete inactive accounts
Render seems to be carrying the torch at this point. I haven’t used much of it, but it seems like a very capable replacement.
dicriseg··on Home Heating Cost Comparison
I regret not doing one of those. We saved a couple thousand using a Fujitsu Halcyon that runs well down to about 20F. When it’s running it’s great, but we cut over to oil in late November.
dicriseg··on Home Heating Cost Comparison
Sure but most of Maine doesn’t have natural gas service. Outside of Portland, you generally may have some gas service along Rt 1. Otherwise, at best you can get bottled propane, but you have to consume a good amount to get decent pricing. It’s usually tiered. This calculators been around for a long time and gave us a pretty reasonable estimate when we did our system.

It’s also not an either/or thing. My house (southern Maine) has oil forced hot water heat, with an older 84% efficient boiler, and a mini split. We have no natural gas service, and propane isn’t cost effective. We run the split through both shoulder seasons, and we turn the split system off when it’s consistently below freezing or oil drops below $2.00/gal (our breakeven point). The heating bill is surprisingly reasonable given the climate. As a bonus we have great AC from the split, and I don’t care what anyone says, it’s needed these days!

Are you in Maine or somewhere else?

dicriseg··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
Im about to go down this path for fun with the saas template I’ve built for myself, but my concern is what am I going to screw up security-wise? Im not an expert by any stretch - I know the basics. I guess we’ll find out!

I just never worried about this with Heroku. I already use the paid tier there for some projects, but the writing seems to be on the wall, so I’m sampling the alternatives. Render is probably where I end up though.

dicriseg··on Removal of Heroku free product plans
If anything this saves a step. For me, git push heroku master was more often git push && git push heroku master at least when starting out.
dicriseg··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (August 2022)
Outreach | Seattle, WA (preferred) or Remote (US) | Full Time | https://www.outreach.io

Outreach is the category-leading sales engagement platform. Our customers are revenue organizations in everything from startups to large companies. We help them automate their sales execution, provide real-time deal guidance, and understand and forecast overall revenue pipeline health.

We're looking for an Engineering Manager in the Business Systems organization. We build, integrate, and scale the systems that enable Outreach's corporate and customer experience teams. This role will lead the first engineering team formed specifically to work on corporate and business needs, and there is a lot of opportunity to build for teams that have not had dedicated engineering support previously. We write a lot of Python and build on AWS. Go and Ruby would also be useful.

To have a look at the job posting or to apply, check out https://jobs.lever.co/outreach/f7a023ca-adaa-44a0-bb14-d9639... or email me directly: edc at outreach dot io.
