dickersnoodle··on California needs to learn from Houston and Dallas about homelessness
Yes, but given who was running DOGE it was never going to work.
dickersnoodle··on OpenAI's H1 2025: $4.3B in income, $13.5B in loss
Good luck with that. Every supermarket I've been in has those stupid baskets or racks of stuff blocking the aisle and their data must show that it gets people to buy a little more of that stuff even though it makes me quite resolved to never buy the shit they're forcing me to look at in order to go get the five things I really need.
dickersnoodle··on Is air travel getting worse?
Don't forget figuring out a way to tie overhead bin space to assigned seats to keep "overhead bin pirates" from storing their carryons in the front of the plane when their seats are in the back...
dickersnoodle··on Ask HN: Do you use personal AI Agents?
No.
dickersnoodle··on It's time for modern CSS to kill the SPA
Less is more, usually.
dickersnoodle··on The current hype around autonomous agents, and what actually works in production
>I think it is a mix of fomo and the 'upside' potential of being able to minimize ( ideally remove ) the expensive "human component". Note, I am merely trying to portray a specific world model.

IOW, it's a case of C-suite "monkey see, monkey do" kicked off by management consultants with crap to sell for very high prices...

dickersnoodle··on NIH is cheaper than the wrong dependency
It is a good thing in some cases for a couple of reasons - first, off the shelf libraries often do a lot more things than are needed for the project at hand which can have the same effect that adding extra lanes to a highway does on traffic - more effort in the same space that could have been avoided. Second, OTS libraries can be opinionated, which winds up bending the existing codebase in ways that aren't optimal or aligned with the other code in a given ecosystem.
dickersnoodle··on Apple's Browser Engine Ban Persists, Even Under the DMA
Hopefully not. If Chrome gets to take over the whole browser world, everyone's desktop will wind up looking like a scene out of "Blade Runner" with all of the ads.
dickersnoodle··on AI coding tools can reduce productivity
This is the kind of thing that pops up when you try to substitute metrics for judgment. It reminds me of the catastrophic fiscal and monetary policies that emerge from economic theories that rest on bad assumptions (like people being rational actors in an economic system) that are there to make the math work.
dickersnoodle··on AI note takers are flooding Zoom calls as workers opt to skip meetings
You missed the part of the process where the results of the meeting were summarized and made available so said engineers can look up the results and see what decisions were made.
dickersnoodle··on AI note takers are flooding Zoom calls as workers opt to skip meetings
This didn't start with COVID. Remember that scene in "Office Space" where the big boss had that banner up that said "Is this good for the company?" and everyone was nodding like they'd just been given the secret to life? Yeah, I've seen those kind of things in real life.
dickersnoodle··on AI note takers are flooding Zoom calls as workers opt to skip meetings
Don't forget the number of people who think they write well but don't. These type of people tend to litter their communications with ghastly MBA-speak, passive voice and super-tired business cliches instead of just writing in plain language.
dickersnoodle··on Claude Code SDK
Only if there is something for that software to do.
dickersnoodle··on Amazon's Vulcan Robots Now Stow Items Faster Than Humans
"anyone over 25". Right.
dickersnoodle··on Uber staff revolts over return-to-office mandate
Same, and while I do it I'll be looking for another job where management isn't suffering from cranial-rectal inversion.
dickersnoodle··on Getting forked by Microsoft
This happens at all levels of scale. Many years ago I was a PHP freelancer for a while and as often as not prospective "customers" would try to 20-question me out of the shape of a solution for them so they could avoid paying me.
dickersnoodle··on Why is OpenAI buying Windsurf?
If the refactoring is beyond the IDE tooling it's even more incumbent on the engineers/developers to know what they're doing instead of outsourcing it to the "brains" behind an LLM.
dickersnoodle··on A Postmortem of a Startup
It isn't as simple as "doesn't benefit them more or less directly". There are often projects that benefit some people that will actively degrade life for everyone else.
dickersnoodle··on Microsoft Copilot shows AI increasingly appears like an unwanted party guest
>At least we decided against deploying copilot.

There's still time...

dickersnoodle··on LLM providers on the cusp of an 'extinction' phase as capex realities bite
You don't have to create a real software engineer, you just have to create one that looks close enough to get some executive his bonus and won't fall over before he's moved on to another company...
dickersnoodle··on France rejects backdoor mandate
Am I the only person giggling at this headline?
dickersnoodle··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
There are prescription drugs with side effects that cause real second-order societal problems (OxyCodone and related opioids are one the come to mind immediately). Amphetamines can cause psychotic behavior (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stimulant_psychosis for an accessible read). If the person using and abusing those drugs were isolated from others and couldn't harm them it would be one thing but they usually aren't.
dickersnoodle··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
This sounds like a libertarian take, in the sense of "libertarians are like housecats - convinced of their own fierce independence but totally dependent on systems they neither control nor understand".
dickersnoodle··on Apple restricts Pebble from being awesome with iPhones
Word. When my kids were pre-teens and teens I moved their computers onto Red Hat because I was tired of cleaning spyware off of it when it was a Wintel box. I moved my wife onto a Macbook Pro for the same reason, and she used to do user support for a community college back in the day.
dickersnoodle··on Executive wealth as a factor in return-to-office
> Not all kids failed disastrously at remote school, some excelled and worked far ahead of their classmates.

My grandson was like this. He was in a "virtual school" pod with three other children and is reading far ahead of his grade level and one of the reasons is that he didn't have to spend a ton of time in the child-management boot camp that a lot of elementary schools tend to be.

dickersnoodle··on Nine unvaccinated people hospitalized as Texas measles outbreak doubles
Means they're easy prey for the leaders of said Jesus freaks. Being more sickly for the rest of their lives means it's easier to "heal" them every so often and keep them in the fold.
dickersnoodle··on Rewriting my website in plain HTML and CSS
It isn't crazy, judging by the number of times I've seen posts here and on other blogs talking about a 100k web page ballooning to 8Mb because of all the Javascript needed to "collect page analytics" or do user tracking when ads are included. Granted that may not be needed for personal websites, but for almost anything that has to be monetized you're going to get stuck with JS cancer because some sphincter in a suit needs for "number to go up".
dickersnoodle··on Hitting OKRs vs. Doing Your Job
I feel this pretty hard. You almost have to do your own 2.0 vision doc for things to make sure your name is on it in order to preempt the opportunists and influence pirates, but that can lead to you being seen as "hogging all the good work" and turning into the common adversary.
dickersnoodle··on Meta Wants More AI Bots on Facebook and Instagram
Of course they do.
dickersnoodle··on App Should Have Been a Website (and Probably Your Game Too)
iOS apps absolutely do support deep links and URLs. Custom URL schemes are the older of the two and let iOS launch the app when someone taps on a URL that begins with its protocol (e.g. "bugmunch://orders?id=xxxxxxx"); the newer is Universal Links, which lets you set your web site up to launch your app from the web page if it's installed on your device.
