dhekimian··on Tell HN: By default, New Relic will start collecting production log data on 5/3
New Relic wants to capture as much data as possible so that they can charge you as much as possible. I run a small environment (~20 small VM's) and we quickly went over the 100GB monthly free plan and that is with just APM Metrics. We found it impossible to figure out how filter out irrelevant metrics and their support/community was not helpful (again, they have no interest in helping limit how much data is collected).

We tried the log ingest but even for 1 VM, it was several GB per day data. 99% of the log data was irrelevant and trying to figure out how to filter it via New Relic was extremely difficult to figure out. We turned it off.

I guarantee that if they turn this on on 5/3, then 90% of their free accounts will shoot past the 100GB free tier. They hope people will convert to paid plans.

If they provided clear and easy to understand examples on how to filter the data before sending it into their environment, it would allow people to decide what data to send and then only have to pay for the data that is relevant instead of EVERYTHING.

TechAccelerator | Remote | Contract / Full-Time | http://www.techaccelerator.com

We're a remote only company and offer flexible hours.

TechAccelerator is a next generation platform disrupting how Enterprise Technology are sold (Servers, Networking, Storage, Virtualization, Security). Our clients range from Publicly Traded Manufactuers to some of Silicon Valley's hotest startups.

We're expanding our team to scale out our platform to AWS, Azure & GCP and overhaul the existing UX & UI. As part of this project, we plan to package the front-end up as an Electron (https://electron.atom.io/) desktop client to provide a good web browser experience but a richer desktop experience that a browser doesn't allow for.

We're looking for people who like to solve complex problems using simple but elegant solutions.

dhekimian··on DNS Performance compared: CloudFlare 1.1.1.1 x Google 8.8.8.8 x Quad9 x OpenDNS
Something isn't right with those results. Since the lowest average is above 20ms, can you share the results of a traceroute to 1.1.1.1 or 8.8.8.8 or any of the DNS servers in the list?

It looks like your results are skewed due to your local network. (On laggy WiFi perhaps?)

dhekimian··on Launch HN: Meetingbird (YC S17) – A Calendar for Teams
Glad to see someone tackling this issue. I too have been frustrated with this and many times thought about building a solution...

I have 10-12 recurring team meetings a week (10-15 minute calls to sync with different teams) and a challenge is there is only one meeting owner making managing them a nightmare. I've longed for a "Team Meeting" interface that would allow multiple people to manage a meeting - rescheduling, adding/removing participants, etc. A similar concept to a Email listserv where the email comes from List-Name@Company.Com and there is an web interface and/or understand the standard calendar email commands that could 'Accept/Subscribe', 'Decline/Unsubscribe', 'Propose New Time', etc. Each Meeting could have properties to show who is invited, subscribed (accepted), unsubscribed (declined). When a meeting invite is forwarded, the new invitee would subscribe to the original invite to ensure updates and changes to the meeting are broadcasted to all attendees. This would work for both one time meetings and recurring meetings and with external attendees.

Also, I'm frequently scheduling meetings with people outside my organization and sending my free/busy time isn't the greatest solution. Use Case: I need to schedule a meeting with UserA@Company1.com, UserB@Company1.com, UserG@Company2.com and UserH@Company2.com along with UserM@MyCompany.com and UserN@MyCompany.com.

Google Hangouts are great but not everyone is comfortable with them (yet). An integration with WebEx would be fantastic to handle creating & updating the meeting within WebEx to keep them in sync.

dhekimian··on An email list’s open rate drops over 50% after changes to Gmail spam filtering
Since you didn't provide your domain name, I can't troubleshoot for you.

I recommend reading my comment https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=14720344 and following the troubleshooting steps I outlined.

dhekimian··on An email list’s open rate drops over 50% after changes to Gmail spam filtering
DETAILED.COM has a bunch of issues that would easily trip SPAM filters.

-------------------------------------------------

TL;DR: DNS, SPF, DKIM & DMARC are not properly configured for DETAILED.COM. Fix and test the issues below.

-------------------------------------------------

Start here: https://mxtoolbox.com/domain/detailed.com/

1. SPF Records

Issue: You should only have 1 SPF record but you have 2.

Combine them. https://www.spfwizard.net/

Current:

  detailed.com. 3600 IN TXT "v=spf1 include:smtp.groovehq.com ~all"

  detailed.com. 3600 IN TXT "v=spf1 mx include:send.aweber.com -all"
Should be:

  detailed.com. IN TXT "v=spf1 mx include:send.aweber.com include:smtp.groovehq.com ~all"
2. You SOA record is incorrect

Your current authoritative DNS servers are:

  detailed.com. 172800 IN NS ns.sourcedns.com.
  detailed.com. 172800 IN NS ns1.sourcedns.com.
Your current SOA is:

  detailed.com. 3600 IN SOA ns.liquidweb.com. admin.liquidweb.com. 2017042600 86400 7200 3600000 14400
In your SOA, ns.liquidweb.com is incorrect. It should be ns.sourcedns.com

3. Missing DKIM records

Check if AWEBER is sending the correct ones.

Use the steps outlined here https://www.phishingscorecard.com/ to find your DKIM key and test to see if it's working properly.

4. Setup DMARC to get reports on your failed email

If you had set this up, you would be getting notifications from Gmail, Yahoo, etc as to why your email is not being delivered properly.

I suggest doing a 14-day free trial via https://dmarcian.com/ Once you create an account, they will provide you with RUA & RUF addresses and process the XML responses for you. Don't forget to add the _DMARC TXT record to your DNS.

5. Test your email using https://www.mail-tester.com/ This site is fantastic and will help you narrow down on actual delivery issues.

dhekimian··on Ask HN: Should I leave my company?
It's healthy to worry about your career.

Think about why your current company is keeping you on the payroll. Since it's a business and not a charity, they must believe you're valuable and will have work in the near future in which your skills will be required. If that's not the case then they probably won't keep you on very much longer.

If your employer treats you well and up till now you enjoyed working for them, I suggest you focus on productive ways to help them and keep your job. Remember they've made an investment in onboarding and training you. As others have suggested, working on internal projects or building out sales/training material has a force multiplier effect which makes you even that more valuable to them.

If you don't like working for this employer then go find a new one. From an employer perspective, there is nothing worse than an employee who isn't happy, not being productive and isn't helping the situation. Do everyone a favor and take control of the situation.

Don't forget that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. Trading one employer for another isn't always viewed well from an employers perspective.
