Obligatory link to How to Start a Startup Stanford class by Sam Altman: http://startupclass.samaltman.com/

As the founder of a MOOC search engine, I am excited. Its good for my business :)

P.S. You can follow the class on Class Central [1] and we will send you an update whenever the course dates are actually announced

dhawalhs··on Today I sold my $278,987 worth of Apple Stock
You might want to take a look at this Wirecutter article: http://thewirecutter.com/reviews/best-android-phone/

It helps narrow down the options.

dhawalhs··on Ask HN: Where do you go for learning about health and well-being?
If you like the MOOC format, then there are a bunch of free online courses around health/nutrition [1] and mindfulness [2].

dhawalhs··on Google Outpaces Facebook on Getting India Connected to Internet
This is where Facebook messaging and actual the Free Basics program are at odds. Free basics is basically 30+ websites which includes Facebook.

Whatsapp is not a part of free basics. Your uncle would have to buy a special'Whatsapp upgrade' if he wanted to message you on Whatsapp.

It's a clear violation of Net Neutrality principles and Facebook spent over $40 million trying to lobby for this to happen.

dhawalhs··on Google Outpaces Facebook on Getting India Connected to Internet
Sorry, I meant to say US/Tech media. Most of them re-wrote what Facebook told them.
dhawalhs··on Google Outpaces Facebook on Getting India Connected to Internet
The article re-iterates the convenient lie promoted by Facebook that Free Basics was "designed for people who can’t afford expensive mobile-data charges."

The cost of internet access is really low in India. For less than $2 a month, you can easily get 500MB/month of 3G access [1]. Even cheaper for $2G access. The cost of a getting a phone is the bigger barrier. But in Facebook's world everyone already has a phone but cannot afford internet.

The example Mark Zuckerberg usually talks about is US where it costs around $2000 for a plan over two years. Which makes it makes a convenient case for Free Basics.

It was disappointing to see how major publications are just re-iterating FB/Zuckerberg words. The only journalism I saw was from Buzzfeed[2][3] and Backchannel[4].

dhawalhs··on Coursera courses preserved by Archive Team
For those unaware, Coursera shutdown their old platform on Jun 30th [1].

Many of the courses on the old platform are slowly coming back on the new platform. When I built the list [2] of courses on the old platform the course count was 472, now its around 390. Some of the notables that I was excited to see come back are:

Neural Networks for Machine Learning with Geoffrey Hinton [3]

Computer Architecture from Princeton [4]

Programming Languages from UW by Dan Grossman [5]

Introduction to Natural Language Processing by Dragomir Radev [6]

Many of these courses were last offered a couple of years ago. Hopefully more courses form the list [2] start coming back.

dhawalhs··on Ask HN: What did your 'Show HN' project turn into?
1679[1] days ago I launched Class Central[2] via a comment on HN. It was something that I built over the Thanksgiving weekend and received over 300 visits from that comment.

Two years later I got into Imagine K12. Now we are doing around $100k ARR, ~250+k monthly uniques, and have been used by almost 5 million people.

dhawalhs··on New Book: 'Relevant Search'
Thanks! Ordered. This seems more relevant(sorry) to my needs.
dhawalhs··on New Book: 'Relevant Search'
Do you have any thoughts on how it compares with other Elasticsearch books? e.g Elasticsearch in Action has really good reviews on Amazon.
dhawalhs··on Coursera Is Removing Hundreds of Courses. Guide to Get Them While You Can
I am the author of the guide. Let me know if anyone has feedback on how can I improve it.
dhawalhs··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
I published a guide on which courses are part of the old platform and how to batch download them before the June 30th Deadline. You can find it here: https://www.class-central.com/report/coursera-old-platform-s...
dhawalhs··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
I only listed courses that haven't been moved to the new platform yet. So courses like Model Thinking and Recommender Systems have been ported over. I suspect its the same for other courses that you listed.
dhawalhs··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
Ahh...just saw this. I already updated the original document with the slugs.

Thanks!

dhawalhs··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
Made a list of 220 courses that are still open for enrollment: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1kaWxZG3krI83WfdzlExW...

I will work on figuring out the slugs next. For you now, you will need to signup for the course and figure it out. You can also find the same the list on Class Central where you can filter by subjects or sort by rating: https://www.class-central.com/collection/coursera-old-stack

dhawalhs··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
They are currently on the old platform. Officially the old platform shuts down on June 30th.

Maybe they will be moved to the new platform. A lot of courses on the old platform have moved to the new platform over the past year.

dhawalhs··on Coursera shuts access to old platform courses
Founder of Class Central here. Our default sorting order is by start dates and Coursera courses now have new sessions starting monthly or bi-monthly here. We will be updating our algorithm soon to rank the courses based on our data.

You can see all the providers we aggregate here: https://www.class-central.com/providers

dhawalhs··on India bans discriminatory pricing based on source/destination/app/content
Couple of articles I would recommend reading about Free Basics

1. Here’s How Free Basics Is Actually Being Sold Around The World http://www.buzzfeed.com/carolineodonovan/heres-how-free-basi...

2. How India Pierced Facebook’s Free Internet Program https://medium.com/backchannel/how-india-pierced-facebook-s-...

For the second article, reporter asked Facebook to put her in touch with Free Basics users. All the people that Facebook connected her were already internet users. But Mark Zuckerberg in an FB post claimed that "19 million people were connected to the internet for the first time with free basics".

Both these articles present examples of how Free Basics is actually advertised in rest of the world.

dhawalhs··on Do Elite Colleges Lead to Higher Salaries? Only for Some Professions
I did my Masters in CS from Georgia Tech. The amount of doors that open up just by being attached to top tier brand is astonishing. Even things like visa interviews become a formality.

Though I disagree with the "better education" part. There were some courses that were unique only to Georgia Tech or taught by professors who were well known in their field.

dhawalhs··on Nanodegree Plus: Get hired within six months of graduating, or tuition refund
Here are the four Nanodegrees that are eligible for the Nanodegree+ program: Android Developer, iOS Developer, Machine Learning Engineer, and Senior Web Developer.

The name scheme is interesting because it tells you what you will become rather than what you will learn. The ML and Web Developer Nanodgrees are pretty new, but we already have reviews for the first two:

dhawalhs··on Facebook's “free internet” programme hits a roadblock in India
Its important to note that WhatsApp is not part of Internet.org. The telecom providers in India are not happy with messaging apps as they are cutting into their text messaging revenues. And they want to charge people for WhatsApp access (its already happening). With Facebook's help they get to create a tiered internet under the guise of "helping the poor".
dhawalhs··on Ask HN: Courses like Coursera or Udemy but without the videos?
CMUs's Open Learning Initiative might we worth looking at - http://oli.cmu.edu/
dhawalhs··on Tell HN: Peter Roberts, immigration lawyer for YC, will do an AMA this Friday
Seconded! I worked with him on getting my H1B transferred to my startup.
dhawalhs··on Ask HN: What's your favorite online course?
All of the course content is based on the hard science, but is simplified so that every one can understand. You can look at the background of one of the course instructor: https://www.coursera.org/instructor/terry
dhawalhs··on Ask HN: What's your favorite online course?
Interestingly we get a lot of mixed reviews for R Prog course: https://www.class-central.com/mooc/1713/coursera-r-programmi...

Learning how to learn is the best course online that any one can take.

dhawalhs··on As Coursera Evolves, Colleges Stay On and Investors Buy In
We launched yesterday reviews for modern day credentials like Specializations and Nanodegrees to tackle this problem. Sorta like 'Credentialing the credentials'. It can be found here:

https://www.class-central.com/certificate

It still early but this might help potential students get a sense of quality of the credential before hand.
