dgrin91··on Meta workers can opt out of being tracked at work up to 30 min
I have a friend that worked in NYC in part of the DOE (not a teacher, but something adjacent). Its a union position, so during COVID when everyone was getting remote, her profession got remote too.

53 minutes per week.

53 minutes. Not even a full hour. It was specific enough that you knew some bureaucrat went out of their way to hyper optimize this, creating a maximum slap-in-your-face effect.

This 30 minutes thing feels the same way.

dgrin91··on Blue Origin's New Glenn blows up during static fire test
I would guess this puts a big dent in NASA's moon plans. I think Blue origin was _just_ selected to be the first moon lander mission. Now they are going to be grounded _again_. They just got off grounded status last week! And this is not even going to mention the significant ground equipment damage they have to deal with.

Very unfortunate all around. I hope BO finds a way to keep the timelines.

The HN title is not clear - Google is NOT killing Aluminum OS
dgrin91··on Fired Atlassian engineer posts breakdown of every system he built
I mean... Is the really valuable? I don't think what atlassian built is particularly technically challenging. There are a lot of products and it would take a lot of work, but no individual bit is hard.

I think the only hard part is getting 350k customers to use it.

dgrin91··on Driver accused of DUI tracks missing laptop to Illinois State trooper's house
Huh, interesting. I am very dubious of that quote. IANAL, but I'm pretty sure if they actually filed that in court they would be laughed out of the room. My guess is either the reporters got it wrong or its some AI hallucination. Unfortunately they don't source this claim.
dgrin91··on Driver accused of DUI tracks missing laptop to Illinois State trooper's house
To be a bit pedantic, its not sovereign immunity, its qualified immunity. It is defeatable, and there are examples of it, but its rather rare. It is an abused and obviously problematic legal doctrine
dgrin91··on Google Cloud Fraud Defence is just WEI repackaged
Maybe a dumb question, but how is this suppose to work for iphone users? They wont have google play, and it seems like android/google play is required here? There is no way they would cut out such a huge chunk of the market.
dgrin91··on Formatting a 25M-line codebase overnight
I don't understand why the felt the need to do a big-bang merge like this. Its a formatter, so the files should be functionally equivalent before and after. Why not just enable it for new files/edit files for a while, then once comfortable apply it to old files in batches? What advantage does the big bang merge give? Seems higher risk for the same reward
dgrin91··on Utah to hold websites liable for users who mask their location with VPNs
Sure, it would force sites to block traffic from vpns.

The fun part is when you post videos of yourself using a vpn to go to gov website or the candidate website and watch them do nothing

Why do you need an online calculator subscription? I can kind of get why you want a physical calculator, especially for a school environment, but why would you want a calculator online when you can just use... the rest of the web?
dgrin91··on I built "Middle Class Museum", a tour of things that used to be affordable
Some of these felt very cherry picked. E.g. 8% interest rate in banks? That probably means mortgage rates were 10-15%, where as they are now 5-6%

$0 pensions? Thats just a lie? The pension comes out of your paycheck. Its literally a line item on your pay stub.

Also this site would be better if you overlay inflation or something to highlight when/where costs rose. E.g. using the CPI inflation calculator the $7400 for a new car would be $28k today. $28k wont buy you a F150 today (starts at ~40k) but its a good chunk of the way, and there are other cars you can buy for $28k easy.

dgrin91··on UAE to leave OPEC
My guess is that is this because UAE has ports on the other side of Hormuz and doesn't want to be restricted in their usage by OPEC? Does this mean UAE thinks Hormuz will be a problem for a long time? And what does it mean for oil prices long term?
dgrin91··on Aliens.gov will be running as a WordPress multisite
If you continue through the warning you get a standard wordpress error about multisites.
dgrin91··on Europe has "maybe 6 weeks of jet fuel left"
Whats the normal stockpile? Isn't the entire US national strategic oil reserve only enough for like 1 month of US usage? 6 weeks of stockpile does not seem like a crazy number to me.
dgrin91··on Laravel raised money and now injects ads directly into your agent
Electricity I don't know how you could deliver ads through, but if someone could think of a way I bet they would. If everyone knew Morris code I bet they would make the lights flicker in Morris code for a discount.

Modern cars with connected infotainment systems are always trying to upsell you

Washing machines I dont know of anything at the moment, but I wouldnt count it out.

Smartphones/watches? Aren't those just ad delivery mechanisms? Not to mention tracking? Its a core foundation of modern ad technology

Headphones are not thank god, I hope it stays that way

dgrin91··on Claude.ai down
Getting only one 9 on a major tech provider that is suppose to be one of the flagship AI companies. That paints a picture hard to ignore.
dgrin91··on StackOverflow: Retiring the Beta Site
Here is a hard question - how could Stack Overflow succeed in a post-chatgpt eta? I mean obviously the new CEO and leadership has been total trash and has squandered their goodwill and user loyalty, but if I was CEO instead I don't know how I would save the ship.

Doubling down on how it was done in the 'good old days' probably wouldn't work because you would slowly bleed user to AI. Selling data to AI companies might work for a bit, but I would guess that the sales value of SO's data has quickly diminishing returns. So what is their path forward?

dgrin91··on Oracle Files H-1B Visa Petitions Amid Mass Layoffs
What I don't get is, how does this economically make sense? Isn't there a 100k fee for h1bs now? So 3k h1bs would cost $300 Mil... Before you even start paying salary
dgrin91··on Which European countries have the best salaries after taxes?
These numbers can get wonky fast. E.g. devs salaries in Ukraine are pegged to the dollar, so they get free raises as the exchange rates plummet. At the same time the cost of living in Ukraine was low before the war and only got lower. Oh and taxes are pretty low in Ukraine.

So I'm pretty sure Ukranian devs will end up with one of the top salary rates in all of Ukraine, but the externalities of that are large.

dgrin91··on How Does Offline Bitcoin Signing Work Step by Step
This is pretty low quality marketing spam.

Offline signing? All signing is offline. Its not even a bitcoin thing... its just how the math works.

dgrin91··on DeployTarot.com – Tarot card reading for deployments
Absolutely fantastic. I actually laughed out loud a few times.

My only suggestion is make the shuffle animation shorter. At first I thought you were actually doing some server work when I clicked it and got concerned.

Also if you sell these in real life I would buy them.

dgrin91··on France's aircraft carrier located in real time by Le Monde through fitness app
Satellite images are not always real time. Also satellites can be affected by things like cloud cover.
dgrin91··on Hollywood Enters Oscars Weekend in Existential Crisis
And its $100 minimum... at least in NYC. Right now its 20-25 a head and that doesn't include transportation or food.
dgrin91··on US orders 2,200 Marines to Middle East
I think thats pretty unlikely. The nuke areas are very far inland. Its impractical from a political point of view to put that many troops that far inland.

I think more likely they may seize Kharg island. It has direct strategic value (~95% of oil exports) and is a much simpler target. This is why they bombed it today - shaping operations.

dgrin91··on E2E encrypted messaging on Instagram will no longer be supported after 8 May
One of the scary things is that not even this really works. Ignoring supply chain attacks, most people treat any client as effectively black box. When was the last time you read through the code of a messaging app? How do you know its safe? Maybe _you_ read through it, but 99% of people don't.
dgrin91··on Can I run AI locally?
Honestly I was surprised about this. It accurately got my GPU and specs without asking for any permissions. I didnt realize I was exposing this info.
dgrin91··on OpenAI raises $110B on $730B pre-money valuation
This is pretty standard. Usually the conditions are performance benchmarks, but may also include IPO. Typically its done in multiple tranches, e.g. 15B at the start, 5 more if you gain +500m users, 5 more if your profit exceeds X, and the rest for IPO (im over simplifying)
dgrin91··on Two insider cases we've recently closed
So they caught 2 very small cases and both cases were literally posting publicly about how they were doing a thing against the rules. Seems like they can't actually do anything if the culprits aren't total idiots?

Also what is this 5x payment penalty? What mechanism do they have to enforce this?

dgrin91··on Vercel's CEO offers to cover expenses of 'Jmail'
Do you really think a $30 hetzner host can sustain that level of traffic performantly? Don't get me wrong, I love hetzner, but I would be very surprised if the numbers work out there.
dgrin91··on Steam Hardware: Launch timing and other FAQs
> When we announced these products in November, we planned on being able to share specific pricing and launch dates by now. But the memory and storage shortages you've likely heard about across the industry have rapidly increased since then. The limited availability and growing prices of these critical components mean we must revisit our exact shipping schedule and pricing (especially around Steam Machine and Steam Frame).

Oof.... sounds like they are all going to be $$$. That sucks and really steals the thunder from the steam machine. Gaming HW is going to suck for many years.
