dgabriel··on How many 10K hours do you have left?
I thought the "10k" rule had been discredited.

dgabriel··on There are no 10x developers, but there are 1/10 ones
Agile has been around for many, many years. I think the Agile Manifesto is a teenager by now. There are a lot of people well into their careers who have "always worked" the so-called Agile way.
dgabriel··on Online Education's Dirty Secret - Awful Retention
This might be true for you, but I always prefer a transcript. I hate watching videos, unless it's strictly for entertainment and requires little real attention.
dgabriel··on A Tip That Will Help You Learn To Code 10x Faster
I try to factor in a decent amount of yak shaving time when I make estimates. Hitting deadlines is all well and good, but there's nothing like a good yak shave.
dgabriel··on Bullying has to stop, now.
The idea that bullies are never academically talented is a false dichotomy. The idea that bullies only attack "smart," kids is ludicrous. Thus, ability-based classes would not end bullying in any way.
dgabriel··on Farewell to Regular Web Development Approaches
Indeed. The first AJAX development I did in the early/mid-2000s was IE-only because the other browsers didn't have the correct support.
dgabriel··on My Dream College Won't Accept Me Because I'm a Woman
HBUs accept people of all races. And, certainly, no one would argue that Harvard or Yale were NOT historically white, unless they were blind to history.
dgabriel··on A Simple Suggestion to Help Phase Out All-Male Panels at Tech Conferences
But why wouldn't you just read the talk description and title to decide whether or not to go? This reaction: "I won't go because I think that some women were specifically recruited!" doesn't make any sense.
dgabriel··on U.S. Students Still Lag Globally in Math and Science, Tests Show
It seems like the data in the "Teaching math to the Talented," article refutes that assumption.

"In short, the incapacity of American schools to bring students up to the highest level of accomplishment in mathematics is much more deepseated than anything induced by recent federal legislation."

dgabriel··on U.S. Students Still Lag Globally in Math and Science, Tests Show
You're correct. But it doesn't work very well for the moderate to very advanced learners, and this leads to fewer kids reaching their capabilities. I don't even call these children "gifted" any more, because school administrators seem to whip out the pitchforks and actively work against "gifted" kids. I wish I were kidding. Massachusetts has ZERO budget for gifted K-12 education. I suppose the private schools will handle that (for those who can afford it), or we'll just ship them in from elsewhere after messing up our own brightest and talented.
dgabriel··on U.S. Students Still Lag Globally in Math and Science, Tests Show
Here's my theory on why so few US children score as advanced level in math:

I have a fifth grader in public school now, and as far as I can tell, schools are nearly incapable of identifying advanced learners, and most teachers don't have the training to teach differentiated math/science. So we settle on curriculums that target the "bottom average." The bright kids get bored and drift away, the slower kids get help, but almost never enough, and the middle group never get properly challenged.

It took two years to get my son math instruction appropriate to his level, and now the school system doesn't seem to know what to do with a 10 year-old who is finishing up Algebra 1. The answer seems to be Kahn Academy, which is not enough. I can't imagine what the battle is like for a single parent with two jobs, or parents who are not native speakers.

dgabriel··on Show HN: HoboJacket, want to see hobos clad in your rival school's jackets?
I hope you have the empathy to understand how terrible this idea is. Seriously, <3
dgabriel··on Show HN: HoboJacket, want to see hobos clad in your rival school's jackets?
This is a really terrible idea. It's not so much "edgy," as heartbreaking. Instead of mocking them, perhaps you can contact any of these Cambridge organizations and do something less dehumanizing that might actually be helpful:

In the Boston area, Boston Organics will deliver a tasty assortment of organic fruits weekly. We get this at my office, and it goes fast. http://www.bostonorganics.com/

I'm sure there are equivalents in other cities.

dgabriel··on Why it is Awesome to be a Girl in Tech
It's more likely that a 45 year old exec would be less interested in a 23 year old woman visiting him regularly in his office, in case it appears to be inappropriate. One of the difficulties for young women in IT/Dev is finding a mentor, and having important close relationships with more experienced folks.
dgabriel··on Why it is Awesome to be a Girl in Tech
Agreed! I've worked at mostly start-ups, and I have yet to work at a start-up that didn't require us all to be DevOps.

dgabriel··on The "Taken Username Effect" on Twitter
I have almost no tweets, but I use it for other things.
dgabriel··on The "Taken Username Effect" on Twitter
This phenomenon hits me all the time because I'm an early adopter. There are many dgabriels in the world, and all of them think my gmail adress is theirs. I have gotten emails meant for theater directors, therapists (with very confidential info), been signed up for a million services (including adultfriendfinder and some Australian hook-up site). I get chain mail with puppy pictures from other people's grandparents, and yoga lesson confirmations, and invitations to participate in physician studies.

On one hand, it's a fascinating window into the diversity of dgabriels and their lives, but it gets irritating when I repeatedly get stuff after telling the sender I am not the droid they are looking for.

And, yes, I totally grabbed my outlook.com username, even though I don't currently have plans for switching...

I'm working on it. I sent the info to another interested party, but I may know others. I can send it to the Start-up Weekend group, too. How many teams shy?

dgabriel··on F1 - The Fault-Tolerant Distributed RDBMS Supporting Google's Ad Business
How do you get scam from this paragraph?

"With F1, we have built a novel hybrid system that combines the scalability, fault tolerance, transparent sharding, and cost benefits so far available only in “NoSQL” systems with the usability, familiarity, and transactional guarantees expected from an RDBMS."

If you don't like NoSQL solutions, or they don't fit your project's needs, don't use them. There's no "scam" here.
