dgabriel··on Google Drops Discussions Search Filter and Others
Just awful, I agree.
dgabriel··on San Francisco's guerrilla protest at Google buses swells into revolt
You are out of your mind.
dgabriel··on Bro pages: like man pages, but with examples only
I took a poll of me, and I think it's bad and not funny. Now we're equal.
dgabriel··on Hey developers, stop forcing me to login to unsubscribe
For real. Today alone, I got someone else's golf course information (twice) and Valvoline receipt. I hate golf, and am deliberately car-free. I just mark it as spam now.
dgabriel··on Why women lose the dating game
Of course there are "WGTOW"s. It's called seperatist feminism. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Separatist_feminism
dgabriel··on 37signals Works Remotely [video]
Are there any co-working spaces near you?
dgabriel··on A Holiday in Honor of the Korean Writing System
Even now, knowledge of classical Chinese is considered an important part of an elite Korean education.
dgabriel··on Why Don’t More Men Pursue Female-Dominated Professions?
There are organizations devoted to getting men into traditionally-female occupations. We don't hear about it as much, because it's not tech oriented?

dgabriel··on After 180 Websites, I’m Ready to Start the Rest of My Life as a Coder
That is not true.
dgabriel··on Being poor changes your thinking about everything
There are fewer of those very day.
dgabriel··on The Pernicious Myth that You Don't Need College to Be an Entrepreneur
"Children"? Who refers to 18-22 year old men and women as children? The terminally condescending?
dgabriel··on We Post Nothing About Our Daughter Online
Mine, too (he's 11). He's also got an XBox live account for Portal 2, a youtube / gmail (mostly for videos about Minecraft and Kerbal Space Program), and an account here: http://scratch.mit.edu/ .

None of these things existed 11 years ago, and I expect there will be a new set of things 11 years hence.

dgabriel··on What Makes Employees Work Harder: Punishment or Pampering?
That's brilliant.
dgabriel··on I understood gender discrimination once I added “Mr.” to my resume
We have to change everyone's attitudes, sure. Internalized sexism is a real thing.
dgabriel··on The Fall of the American Worker
My partner and I have twins, and are not married. We both have been married previously, and it really doesn't make a big difference to us. We have a better bond than either of us did with our former spouses, and have been together longer than we were with the people we married. It's cool.
dgabriel··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School
I bet girls would do just fine, and a sane combination of approaches works best. The biggest issue with schools is that everybody thinks they know how to fix stuff, but the research is spotty at best. Standardized tests and core curriculums? Differentiated learning or academic tiers? We all have opinions, and there are many in this thread, but not all of these opinions can be simultaneously right.
dgabriel··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School
My son gets to do his tests on a yoga ball, and it works very well.
dgabriel··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School
In my experiences with three children in US public schools, this is not true.
dgabriel··on Stop Penalizing Boys for Not Being Able to Sit Still at School
It would alienate some young boys, too. There are a lot of stereotypes in these comments.
dgabriel··on A summer job paid tuition back in ’81, but then we got cheap
Administrative and IT costs are much higher.
dgabriel··on Dora, Diego, SpongeBob and Other Viacom Shows Leave Netflix
We still get these via amazon prime. We actually get much more than $80 in prime instant videos and shipping.
dgabriel··on Soylent Campaign
This is my concern, as well. I love food. My family loves food. Most people, even in developing countries, would prefer actual food to a nutrition shake. Culture, family, community, and love are all bound up in our relationships to eating. Bachelor chow is all well and good, but it won't save the world.

That said, Plumpy'nut and other RUTFs have done amazing things for the neediest people on the planet, so I'm not as willing as other HNers to throw the project entirely under the bus. I am interested in how this product compares to what exists.

dgabriel··on Soylent Campaign
Right? Medifast. Optifast. Slimfast. There are literally thousands of options.
dgabriel··on Make $30 an hour, no bachelor's degree required
You can get a CS degree and never, ever encounter SQL injection, unit testing, or serious version control. Hell, you can get an MS without worrying about those things.
dgabriel··on The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
"Those people are just looking for a reason not to get exercise, and are better off dying around their mid 50s."

It's a ridiculous statement. Life expectancy, even among those who do not regularly exercise, is greater than 50. My mom is 70, and the most exercise she's ever gotten was from walking (and not for fitness, just around the block, or meandering through the mall). She certainly would not have been better off dying in her 50s.

dgabriel··on The Scientific 7-Minute Workout
Why would you say something like that?
dgabriel··on Flat design is great for mediocre designers like me
I'll take flat design over liquid buttons and shoddy, poorly thought-out skeuomorphism any day. You may hate it, but it's going to be ubiquitous for a while.
dgabriel··on Actually eat healthily for £1 per day
We all have different goals, but interesting meals are certainly near the top of my priority list, especially since I eat with my family and meal times are more than just a way to fill a hole.
dgabriel··on How I got robbed of 34 btc on Mt.Gox today
You make the insurance price and due diligence bar high enough.
dgabriel··on How I got robbed of 34 btc on Mt.Gox today
This is exactly right. Bitcoins are not a good idea for casual investors who can't/won't manage their own security, or can't bear the loss in case of a breach. If you want an unregulated, untraceable currency, that's the price you pay.
