dfgert··on Ask HN: What software/tech blogs/magazines should I be reading in 2024?
I am trying to do this as well, but being surrounded by news/social/stream outlets that just push unnecessary hype its hard to achieve this. Any recommendation on how to filter out the junk?
dfgert··on FAA approves unleaded fuel for piston fleet
I am shocked to read this. Why are they still using leaded fuel? There are so many well known research that links lead in fuel to unstable mental health and crime in population.
dfgert··on MIT cuts ties with Chinese tech firms Huawei, ZTE
What makes you believe US completes fairly and openly? Don't you see news on China import embargo and capture of it's executives.
dfgert··on Show HN: I made a platform for journalists to “open source” their fact checking
Wikipedia has flaws, too. 1. Your account need to have good history or social repo for your edits to be seriously considered by Wikipedia admins. 2. Admin can have their own set of bias and can decide to ignore edits.

Remember Wikipedia is a centralized and under control of single entity, fact that they rely on donation doesn't change anything.

dfgert··on Privacy Is Just the First Step, the Goal Is Data Ownership
Protecting users data is a very hard problem to solve in current tech landscape. There are enormously profitable business build around this and are driving significant portion of economy.

Only solution I can see is to build alternative economic model that can thrive while protecting data, otherwise it would be an uphill battle with all tech giants that are going after user data for profit.

dfgert··on Warp – Mobile VPN
No matter how much they try to sell it as a good will gesture towards mobile users, I will not buy it. There are good examples where company starts off with good intent but later turns into a typical selfish corporation. Lets face it, every single corporation has to continuously grow, as demanded by market, which means at some point they will break their promises to implement new means of making money.
dfgert··on AT&T CEO interrupted by a robocall during a live interview
I feel like this for most sensational news stories that I hear on news. Too much agenda in every news pisses me off. I wish there was a way to filter out such agenda.
dfgert··on There is no reason to cross the U.S. by train, but I did it anyway
I agree. Train were so much more fun as I can recall from my childhood memories. Now I rarely see someone traveling via train, and those who do are trying to save some money(train fares are cheaper in other countries).

I guess time that's available to people has shortened so much that they can't afford to engage in fun once in a while. Even the damn vacation feels so hectic and stressful. I guess that's because most people's idea of vacation is going to new country/city that they have never visited(totally unfamiliar with things there) and try to cover all of it in 1-2 weeks(all they get in a year).

dfgert··on A huge fireball exploded in Earth's atmosphere in December, according to Nasa
NASA actually receive lots of funding(might be second after military). Most of their work doesn't align with any of the politics promises, even then they receive good chunk of budget spending.
dfgert··on I started Gumroad as a weekend project
Plus, one looses so much(health and relations) in the process of making lots of money quickly that their option of coming back is no longer available. Lots of money also heightens one's expectations and comfort requirements so much that they hardly save much and, even if they do, its not enough for them to maintain lifestyle for long without new income.
dfgert··on Some airlines and regulators ground 737 Max in wake of Ethiopian Airlines crash
Thats because its an USA company. You don't see it coming up in news, you don't see any lawsuits from other countries, and they will keep covering the real issue as long as they like. There have been incidents in past when corporations have leveraged USA influence to punish countries that have tried bringing airlines companies to justice(like when Indonesian airlines were barred from entering USA airspace because of them blacklisting a American airline). Had it been another company whole Airline would have been grounded and news channels would have been all over it.
dfgert··on On the death of my family's dairy farm
Landscape protection is very important, but I agree with comment below. Supply Chain Management(SCM) is being promoted via such claims. While it may be willing to do landscape protection now, there's no guarantee that it will continue to do so in future. Corporations are known to eventually focus on profits.
dfgert··on Minimum Viable Personality (2011)
That's because most people religiously put faith in dumb news outlets of USA and keeps repeating the same arguments without trying to fully understand them. They have gotten accustomed to outsourcing critical thinking process to news orgs.
dfgert··on Lyft Files S-1
When you make money more than what you need it irrelevant how you spend it.
dfgert··on Nasa Goes Quiet over Galveston for Flight Series
Abnormal environment experiences do affect normal bodily functioning in animals and us. Its good that they are thinking of ways to advance technology without compromising our health.
dfgert··on A Cultural History of Fat
When a person is struggling to even pay his bills, which most of the Americans are, then tactics like these from food companies does have lots on influence on what such people decides to eat.
dfgert··on A Cultural History of Fat
Too much focus on growth is a quality that always leads to once doom whether its a person or a corporation. Its sad that our business economics favors this.
dfgert··on Pinterest Blocks Vaccination Searches in Move to Control the Conversation
If speeches are regulated to this extent then it hampers society from discovering others experiences and learning from them.
dfgert··on Pinterest Blocks Vaccination Searches in Move to Control the Conversation
'Peoples’ intuition is usually wrong without a lot of experience to back it up' -- people's understandings are based on their own and their social circle experiences. What's make you think its always wrong? Do you mean we keep our brain shut and feeling suppressed about anything that's not coherent with experts opinion? That's what happen in Autocratic government.
dfgert··on Ask HN: Is it just me or did Google search recently get a lot worse?
Are there any alternatives? I am ok with indie, slow, paid, not-super-accurate options.
dfgert··on Conversations among German Nuclear Physicists at Farm Hall (1945) [pdf]
I don't believe that it was a unfair race so to speak. In my knowledge it were the German scientists who moved to US and helped US develop the bomb. US may have had the resources but it definitely lacked the knowledge for building bomb which German surely possessed.
dfgert··on Ask HN: How did you decide what problems to solve in your lifetime?
Life is not meant to be controlled based on your understanding of world because as human being we all suffer from subjectivity and fallacies. Learn to silence your brain and feel the life around you and in yourself. Listen to it and your role in this world would become apparent.
dfgert··on The Hand Licking Incident
I don't understand when will medicine recognize the cause of all health complications instead of trying to individually path each and every problem. People can then start correct precautionary measures. All health issues that we see on rise today were virtually absent in pre-industrial era and are directly result of our newly adopted habits and environment. We are paying so much of cost to live in a "modern" world.
dfgert··on Fewer Americans bike to work despite new trails, lanes, bicycle share programs
Same is valid for Asian countries. Bikes and bikers clothes culture is focused more on the utility rather than fancy looks. I would blame the US bike market for focusing only on looks.
dfgert··on Fewer Americans bike to work despite new trails, lanes, bicycle share programs
I feel like biking to work is being promoted just for the sake of polishing city's reputation. Cities would build all these fancy facilities, which are grossly expensive infrastructure to build and maintain, just for sake of feeling that they did something to solve traffic problems. Everyone is aware of problems a biker faces on everyday commute(lack of amenities at work, not safe, weather, lack of infrastructure and motor driver's attitude) all of which needs to be solved for more people to adopt biking.
dfgert··on The Uncharity of College: The Big Business Nobody Understands
I doubt analyzing university would do much since its already a common knowledge at this point still nothing is happening. Government and legal institutions are ineffective in solving problem where solution results in loss in profit.

Building alternatives to universities that are driven by grass-roots movements are the perfect way forward here. Home schooling, MOOCs and startup businesses are some of the developments that have started diminishing the need of expensive degrees.

dfgert··on The U.S. National Academies Reports on the Prospects for Quantum Computing
My TLDR- We don't have any clue on how quantum mechanics function other than some guesses so we are not in position to predict anything about its future. Science might as well believe in God if its backing any logic to explain QC.
dfgert··on Headspace vs. Calm: A Meditation-App Battle That’s Anything but Zen
I feel the same about meditating near an powered-on electronic device, but in modern world it impossible to escape from EMW emitting devices. You can turn off all wireless capable devices in your home but can't control devices in neighbor house or nearby cell tower.

I have personally had more satisfaction meditating outside in fresh air near natural environment than indoor. I also know of many meditative experts who routinely visit remote areas in forests to practice deep concentration.

I would like someone to build an app to locate more favorable spot for meditation by calculating net wifi traffic in air.

dfgert··on How to Grow Old (1951)
Being in the company of your child's family is indispensable in late old age(part of life when one is physically and mentally incapable of excising things OP mentioned). Joy that old folks gets by spending time with grandchildren is irreplaceable. Witnessing the daily life of child's family and being part of it is excellent for psychological health, helps mind stay in present and not drift back to past or other unnecessary worries.

What your child feels about you staying with them is something that you inculcate in them when they are young. If you didn't bother sharing space with your parents in the time of there need then your child won't either.

dfgert··on UCLA asked faculty to consider declining to review for Elsevier journals
UCLA and other universities are in trouble because of their own doing. They relied on one publishing system and allowed it to grow so big that now this system is mishandling them for its own profit. Had they been more cautious of implications of their actions they would have avoided current situation.

University should immediately back out of negotiations as what they desire(open access) would never be fulfilled by publisher whose sole mean of income relies on subscription costs and search for/or build an truly open access communication system. Entering into another long-term contract with Elsevier would further delay the much needed reforms in currently unsustainable scientific publication process.
