dfee··on Introducing System One Models and Jev
> I'm biased but I wouldn't call it misleading

- @CompleteSkeptic

Very strange.

dfee··on Mexican student creates an acoustic fire extinguisher to put out fire in seconds
when i was in the 5th grade (give or take a couple years), there was an innovation project where we were to bring in and present to the class an invention.

i remember a girl inventing what i now know to be a "flexible weighted dip tube" – think of it as a shampoo bottle that you can pump upside down – and was amazed.

like this submission, the flexible straw wasn't really invented by the student. at best it was independently discovered, but this patent was from at least twenty five years before: https://patents.google.com/patent/US3547296A/en

to that end, i wonder what the point of presenting these inventions as your own are – especially in the time of the internet when prior art is so easily discovered. or, did i miss the point?

dfee··on Creativity is the new moat
i've been telling people it's "imagination".
dfee··on Htmx 4.0
> I really like htmx

> Full Disclosure, I am CEO of HTMX

i think you've found a good job!

dfee··on Solving the 1+N Query Problem
N+1 is at best two queries, right? I always interpreted it as:

  query 0 = list
  query 1_0 = getItem(0)
  ...
  guest 1_n = getItem(n)
optimized to:

  query 0 = list
  query 1 = getItems(0..n)
dfee··on Moderna reports first positive Phase 3 for mRNA neoantigen therapy in melanoma
> It's only recently that we had space for completely retarded ideas like "staying in the sun doesn't hurt you" or "sunscreen causes cancer"

but, what if staying in the sun isn't binary?

and, what if everyday products did cause cancer? https://www.health.harvard.edu/cancer/cancer-concerns-from-e...

dfee··on Superpowers, Not Superintelligence
i have and continue to build a ton of automations against my life. my goal is to offload more and more of my "life" to it.

- bills? bookkeeping? reading DMARC emails? yeah, i want to do none of it, but i desperately want these chores done.

- spend time with kids? study interesting topics? eat and drink interesting things? i want more of this.

dfee··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
but, you're going to pay either way (assuming you have a custom domain).
dfee··on AI;DR (AI; Didn't Read)
that's fine. doesn't absolve you from responsibilities of recipientship - as you'll inevitably find out (if you haven't already).
dfee··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
keep going – i was in your shoes 24mo ago.
dfee··on ICE Shot a Journalist and Threw Him in Detention. He's Approaching 300 Days
irs.gov is without a doubt the SOT ;)
dfee··on ICE Shot a Journalist and Threw Him in Detention. He's Approaching 300 Days
makes it doubly hard when you can't trust a media bias website, either.

solving for "trust" is one of the hardest problems out there in 2026.

dfee··on ICE Shot a Journalist and Threw Him in Detention. He's Approaching 300 Days
admittedly, i don't know anything about this case, but the person at the center of it seems to be Carlitos Ricardo Parias.

the intercept (source link) was rated far left by AllSides (https://www.allsides.com/news-source/intercept-media-bias) and the press release from justice.gov has a very different perspective (https://www.justice.gov/usao-cdca/pr/illegal-alien-mexico-ch...).

it's very unclear what can be taken at face value.

dfee··on Pixel Watch 5
i was wondering recently if i could ditch my iPhone for (just) an Apple Watch. i know i can't fully ditch it (an Apple Watch needs an iPhone for management). but, i'm curious about the concept nonetheless: what would it be like to ditch a smartphone for a smartwatch?
dfee··on AI is removing the middle class of software engineering?
> With AI, "bad" engineers can now amplify their "bad" engineering x10 across the organization.

and

> I don't subscribe to the idea that AI generated code is fundamentally bad, just that people lack the right skills today to wrangle agents into writing good code.

those people who lack the right skills today – are they the bad engineers you'd mentioned previously?

dfee··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
in that money is the atomic unit of economic control, sure.

government's don't surveil for money, unless you bend the argument a bit to say the government has finite resources and is run off money itself. which is kinda true, but also kinda fuzzy (the Fed).

dfee··on Letter to Governor Abbott on responsible AI infrastructure in Texas
:waves: from California
dfee··on A walk through of the DeltaNet family of linear attention variants
but it biases towards the latin alphabet. so your point is diminished.
dfee··on Show HN: Whetuu – a zero-config cross-shell prompt written in Zig
> Pronounced FEH-too (/ˈfɛ.tuː/). Stress the first syllable. In Māori wh is an f sound, not a w. The macron in ū makes that vowel long, which is why the ASCII spelling doubles it.

oof. deliberate choice?

dfee··on Writing by hand is good for your brain
it's totally obnoxious to buy a copy of a book with notes in it and complain about those notes. 2¢
dfee··on Most Americans say "not in my backyard" to AI data centers
As Covered in the Hit TV Series Pied Piper, Season 1 (2014): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNi0p7YtmyY
dfee··on Claude Is Not a Compiler
the infinite string must have more refined properties than infinite length. an infinite string of a repeating char doesn't encode much of interest.
dfee··on Pseudpocalypse
then you'd imagine the inverse is possible: fabricate text that matches a fingerprint - poisoning someone's (psuedo-anonymous) reputation.
dfee··on Stripe and Advent have made a joint offer to acquire PayPal – sources
HHI and Simpsons are neat new finds.

There's also this other variant of the Simpson's Index: https://www.thesimpsonsindex.com/

dfee··on Punch yourself in the face with reality
there are two camps: those who have spent the tokens to figure out how to wield AI, and those who haven't. unfortunately, it's not cheap to get to the former category… and i imagine it'd be difficult to lose access to that tooling and fall back to the second category.
dfee··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
if you want to offload the decision to a decision engine, might i recommend the following prompt to the LLM of your choice:

> "which should i choose: 1 word only"

the comments are already universally aligned. but, it now seems you want a defense of your preference.

dfee··on Ask HN: Should I do a CS masters at Cambridge or start as a new grad at Amazon?
I've not worked at Amazon, but work in other big tech. If you were my son, I'd tell you to pursue Cambridge. Amazon employment isn't that special.

(i've been in industry for 18+ years, went to a name brand school, and live in the heart of silicon valley. Cambridge, i'd imagine, gives you at the least a more interesting story, and at the most a different opportunity set. amazon is now the lower bar of what you should hope to attain after Cambridge.)

dfee··on DOGE is done. What happened to its records?
this is non sequitor.

why isn't there really much waste in federal spending? because when you cut, nobody likes it.

well, no. there is pork.

a better example might be: "Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half" - John Wanamaker

dfee··on Reverse centaurs are the answer to the AI paradox (2025)
centaur / reverse centaur seems to me like glass half full / empty.

tough for Cory to get one wrong, though.

dfee··on SpaceX wants to launch 100k more Starlink satellites for 100x the bandwidth
i live a few miles west of core Palo Alto (technically, still in Palo Alto); Starlink is my only real choice for broadband, and it's great.
