The original ones came with a USB C Y cable that allowed you to connect to the computer but get power from an alternate USB source. They also have beards on the board for DC power.
dfc··on Apple says more ex-employees may have taken confidential data to OpenAI
That was a style then. It may not be your thing or mine, but it's not puzzling that someone was caught up in a fashion style of the times.

A shot of tequila? Or my team having a shot at winning world series? There are lots of shots.
dfc··on The Cold War's Accidental Whale Observatory
I never heard anyone say "October Missile Crisis." Did you grow up in Cuba or a Cuban American community?
dfc··on The Cold War's Accidental Whale Observatory
If this article is interesting to you I highly recommend War of the Whales. It is an interesting look at Cold war science+politics and the environment. A decent part of the book is about SOSUS.

dfc··on The complete IPv4 address space, mapped
I can't find one /8 that is assigned to boeing. I think your idea of IP allocation is very outdated.
dfc··on The complete IPv4 address space, mapped
You just listed companies that have one /8 not multiple /8s.
dfc··on The complete IPv4 address space, mapped
Do you have any examples of large companies that have multiple /8s but can get away with a /21?

One of my favorite readings from undergrad and grad school was "The Problem of Social Costs" by R. Coase. I'm sorry you think externalities are glossed over by economics, but Im excited to tell you that this is certainly not the case. Coase won the Nobel Prize in economics in large part for his work on externalities. They don't hand out Nobel prizes for glossed over topics. It's definitely worth a read of you wish economics paid more attention to externalities:

dfc··on FCC updates covered list to include foreign-made consumer routers
It looks like it probably won't matter. The site says you can preorder a DevKit "Shipping between June and September 2025."

The fact that they haven't updated that webpage with new information since October 1st 2025 seems to indicate bad news...

dfc··on Show HN: Sameshi – a ~1200 Elo chess engine that fits within 2KB
How many games did you have to throw away because stockfish wanted to castle? Or did you force stockfish to not castle? Castling seems like such a frequent move it is hard to draw any conclusions about the strength of an engine that does not support it.
dfc··on Notepad++ hijacked by state-sponsored actors
You have worked for the same company for >55 years? That's wild. Can you share the industry?
dfc··on Noctia: A sleek and minimal desktop shell thoughtfully crafted for Wayland
At first I thought "desktop shell" was supposed to be compositor, but that's not the case, a wayland compositor like sway is a requirement. I've been using sway for years I have no idea what a "shell" is? It's somewhere in between a desktop environment and a theme?
dfc··on Flameshot
Thank you. I tried that. Having the interface run under Xwayland caused a ton of problems with my monitors. I also don't use a lot of QT apps so not being able to paste was a problem.
dfc··on Mobile carriers can get your GPS location
Yes I saw that and also took it to mean the person didn't read the article. A text to your phone number? The article never mentions SMS. Heck I think the 2g/3g "feature" does not even require the phone to even have a SIM installed. This next sentence also seems to have been written without reading the article: "This can be turned off, since implementation."
dfc··on Mobile carriers can get your GPS location
What law requires carriers to keep Cell Site Location Information for 2 years?
dfc··on Mobile carriers can get your GPS location
> It must have a tamper-resistant identifier (IMEI number ... kind of).

What is the tamper resistant number that is kind of the IMEI?

dfc··on Mobile carriers can get your GPS location
Did you read the article or are you merely responding to the title? The article begins by acknowledging triangulation and then moving on to the point of the article. The article is about commands built into the UMTS and LTE specs for requesting GPS from the device. Your comment seems to be about everything but the main point of the article.
