dfc··on Testing “Exotic” P2P VPN
That's fine, but s debug tool is different than the config tool. You complained that you had to use ssh to config nebula, you do not. The ssh interface is not the recommended way to configure nebula.
dfc··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
Your original comment before editing complained about using pdflatex as if it was not part of the pandoc toolchain. It was not about pandoc being universal.
dfc··on Testing “Exotic” P2P VPN
I am not sure what the author thought was so pompous about nebula. It's unfortunate because it seems to have prevented them from reading the documentation. The ssh interface is used as a debug tool not a configuration tool: https://nebula.defined.net/docs/guides/debug-ssh-commands/
dfc··on Ubuntu 25.10's Rust Coreutils Is Causing Major Breakage for Some Executables
No, but sort of yes. This is from Ubuntu:

"Interim releases will introduce new capabilities from Canonical and upstream open source projects, they serve as a proving ground for these new capabilities." https://ubuntu.com/about/release-cycle

dfc··on Typst: A Possible LaTeX Replacement
You will be surprised to learn that pandoc uses latex for generating the PDF. It's barely hidden:

dfc··on Why use mailing lists?
I think one of the reasons is that mailing list usage expects/imposes some level of reflection time and editing between sending a new reply. Imagine if every time someone hit enter in slack/teams/discord a new email showed up in a thread somewhere in someone's mail reader.
dfc··on Kitty – GPU based terminal emulator
The developer is up front about the issue:

> One of kitty's fundamental features is the ability to display fonts at arbitrary font sizes, which bitmap fonts are not suited for.

> So if you like bitmap fonts, kitty is not for you.

It's hard to argue with that logic.

dfc··on Tabby – A Terminal for the Modern Age
I don't understand what an ssh client does that is useful as a separate thing from your terminal of choice and openssh. Why wouldn't you always just ssh through your terminal?
dfc··on Sig Sauer citing national security to keep documents from public
Does any service in the world have a standard issue full auto handgun?
dfc··on Burner Phone 101
What about elevators, parking garages, basements? Network Attach messages are fairly common in the mobile device logs I have seen.

Your "Recreational Paranoia" should include rebooting your iPhone more often.

dfc··on Burner Phone 101
I am not sure I agree with this. I don't think that running out of battery or rebooting a phone is that rare.

But more importantly, if these events are noticeable and Alice does what you suggest she is probably going to highlight her location. Especially if she naively waits till she is 15 minutes from home to switch her burner on. Over time there will be a circle around her house of no burner phone network attach events.

dfc··on SystemD Service Hardening
It says the change was dropped? I guess at least they tried.
dfc··on OpenIndiana: Community-Driven Illumos Distribution

dfc··on When we get Komooted
Hiring senior employees sounds like it requires crystal ball level planning. Are there any tricks to make growth easier?
dfc··on A 14kb page can load much faster than a 15kb page (2022)
Is it safe to say the website is your passion project?
dfc··on Bitchat – A decentralized messaging app that works over Bluetooth mesh networks
I would love to use it to talk to my girlfriend when we go bike riding. I was shocked by the price tag for all the motorcycle helmet comms systems.
dfc··on Mid-sized cities outperform major metros at turning economic growth into patents
Was there an expectation that economic busts drove innovation? Am I naive to think booms not busts would be the engine for innovation?
dfc··on Ask HN: How do I give back to people helped me when I was young and had nothing?
That was it. It seemed like a golden age for a lot of different p2p privacy ideas. I don't know what a modern version of the conference would look like.
dfc··on GNOME and Red Hat Linux eleven years ago (2009)
I can't remember the name of the Linux CD set I would buy. It had a red background and a picture of the globe. The cds contained slackware/sunsite/gnu etc. I think it started with an "I"...

EDIT:

Found it, wild nostalgia! It was infomagic. This was my first Linux install: https://archive.org/details/ldr_0895_4cd

dfc··on Ask HN: How do I give back to people helped me when I was young and had nothing?
I had a similar experience at PET in Ottawa around 2007. I felt so out of place listening to so many interesting talks and seeing all these people that I "knew" from mailing lists and IRC channels. Len Sassaman was really kind to me and included in me in hallway conversations. It was so wild I couldn't get over that rabbi was taking the time to explain things to me and listen to my questions. He definitely was not extending some grand charitable gesture, it was just genuine kindness.

I know I will never have that kind of impact on someone but I hope I have / can continue to pay rabbi back by practicing that level of kindness and consideration to others.

dfc··on Solving LinkedIn Queens with SMT
Lamport+Microsoft was the first thing that I thought of when I read the comment. FWIW he retired at the beginning of this year.
dfc··on OpenBSD IO Benchmarking: How Many Jobs Are Worth It?
There is something weird with the charts. X is never 0 at the origin. And in the Linux vs OpenBSD graphs the data is missing for Linux when job=1.
dfc··on Building an AI server on a budget
The author also refers to Californian power limits. So it seems the criticism is misplaced.
dfc··on Why Android can't use CDC Ethernet (2023)
Instead of looking it up you could have read the article:

So what’s this about CDC Ethernet and why should I care?

CDC stands for Communications Device Class.

dfc··on Why Android can't use CDC Ethernet (2023)
What are Android T+, U+ and V+?
dfc··on How we decreased GitLab repo backup times from 48 hours to 41 minutes
That's weird I looked at the monthly and did not see any Gitlab employees. Were you looking at a different repo?
dfc··on How we decreased GitLab repo backup times from 48 hours to 41 minutes
I dont know how you came to that conclusion. Just looking at the top 4 contributors over the last 2 years[1] it looks like one works for google(gitster), two work at Github and one works at GitLab(pks-t).

dfc··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
Different folks different strokes. But I think saying "who cares what the decor inside the house looks like" is a little naive. Surely you can imagine that there is some population of people that care what the decor inside their house looks like AND do not want to hide the display on the thermostat? I think that group of people is probably a significant number of people... large enough that you are not raining on OP's parade.
dfc··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
The CT101 looks awful compared to the nest thermostat. I don't think you are raining on a cool personal project.
