dexwiz··on Oracle files H-1B visa petitions amid mass layoffs
Because our government is not run for the workers but the owners. Full stop.
dexwiz··on Do your own writing
Sometimes people just need something else to tell them their ideas are valid. Validation is a core principle of therapeutic care. Procrastination is tightly linked to fear of a negative outcome. LLMs can help with both of these. They can validate ideas in the now which can help overcome some of that anxiety.

Unfortunately they can also validate some really bad ideas.

dexwiz··on A pig's brain has been frozen with its cellular activity locked in place
This assumes you wake up and are given liberties. There are much worse fates. Waking up and owing your life to the company forever is pretty awful.

Worse even is never truly waking up but instead being replicated and turned into the brain for a servitor. If you believe the Roko Worshippers, you might be woken up just to be tortured.

dexwiz··on Ask HN: How do you prevent MCP agents from looping in production?
What is wrong with a blunt tool? Almost every other system ends up with a hard cap of retries.
dexwiz··on Rendezvous with Rama
I'd all the Southern Reach trilogy (quadrilogy? now) to this list. It's more on the cosmic/eldritch side, but similar sense of unknowable.

SPOILER WARNING

My interruption is that Area X/The Crawler is a probe built to study and build a bridge back to its creator. Area X is expanding because it's the inside of a wormhole. But whatever is on the other side is long dead, and the probe is acting on instinct.

dexwiz··on Neural Boids
Boids are little lovely simulations. This just looks like a boring force directed graph. I wonder if there is any correlation between the blandness of LLMs and weight based models.
dexwiz··on Log messages are mostly for the people operating your software
I've worked in tech support. I get that 25-50% of the cases appear to be "read the docs to me." But the majority of those is because docs are poorly written, are overwhelming for new users, or they don't understand them and won't admit that directly.
dexwiz··on Log messages are mostly for the people operating your software
That question is more likely how do I install, not what to install.
dexwiz··on TSA leaves passenger needing surgery after illegally forcing her through scanner
It's a job program. And mostly theater to dehumanize you. Most VIPs get to skip it all together.
dexwiz··on America vs. Singapore: You can't save your way out of economic shocks
Thanks for the follow up. I am always hesitant to believe things that sound too Gladwellian.
dexwiz··on Overall, the colorectal cancer story is encouraging
You're right. 8 year olds would call you ancient and 80 year olds would call you a baby. Middle age is relative and unless you're over 45 you don't admit to it, and then hold on to it for too long.
dexwiz··on America vs. Singapore: You can't save your way out of economic shocks
I once heard a linguistic explanation for this.

European languages have a future tense, which means people have different ideas of themselves in the present and future. You can even hear this in phrases like "that's a problem for future me."

While Chinese lacks the European styled future tense, ignoring time phrases, auxiliary verbs, etc. So people more clearly conceptualize their present and future selves as the same. Leading to things like increased saving.

This of course is rooted in linguist psychology, a very soft science. But still an interesting idea.

Something I've never seen in these analyses is drinking. Millennials are heavy drinkers. Both craft brews and cocktails were defining generational traits. Not everyone is a drinker but it appears they are heavy drinkers compared to other generations.

The theory behind the ultra marathoners is that extreme distance running disrupts the epithelial layer and microbiome in the gut. Wouldn't drinking have similar effects?

dexwiz··on The PaaS Graveyard: Why Platforms Keep Dying and Developers Keep Migrating
I wonder how many of these companies burned cash to acquire customers, thinking they could jack up rates to improve profit. At the first sign of this, people jumped ship. Also any significantly large client will migrate to a lower layer to save cost. This means your business is effectively locked into SMB, because the enterprise market is just not there.
dexwiz··on America has a tungsten problem
Very small, high precision spheres are hard to make. Ball bearings also fall into this category. Many modern machines depend on this. I never see it "recreate society manuals," but they should be.
dexwiz··on Curating a Show on My Ineffable Mother, Ursula K. Le Guin
I think a lot of Asimov stories fall into the same category. When you shape a genre, looking back it all seems so obvious. I do think Le Guin wrote much better characters than Asimov.
dexwiz··on Software factories and the agentic moment
Growth will be proportional to spend. You can cut waste later and celebrate efficiency. So when growing there isn't much incentive to do it efficiently. You are just robbing yourself of a potential future victory. Also it's legitimately difficult to maximize growth while prioritizing efficiency. It's like how a body builder cycles between bulking and cutting. For mid to long term outlooks it's probably the best strategy.
dexwiz··on Ask HN: Is it AGI for software engineering?
DBs are a solved problem for most cases. APIs are a solved problem. UX patterns are a solved problem. Yet I solved problems related to these things every day.
dexwiz··on Data centers in space makes no sense
Requirements for power still don't come close to total or practical surface area. If we get to that point, space collectors with microwave beams to the ground are viable.
dexwiz··on [dead]
Every accusation is an admission.
dexwiz··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
Have you never been screened where they swab your items and stick it in a machine? That is to detect explosives. They can use the first machine to target people for follow up screening.
dexwiz··on Heathrow scraps liquid container limit
If batteries were standardized and replaceable I bet they would force you to not bring your own, and only ones purchasable passed the gate could be used. Maybe that a silver lining to the repairability issues.
dexwiz··on 'Active' sitting is better for brain health: review of studies
Haha, it's just for bragging rights.
dexwiz··on 'Active' sitting is better for brain health: review of studies
Below Deck is our guilty pleasure for reality TV. We make predictions on who is going to get with whom, at what stage in the season certain people implode, who will get fired. I think Aesha from Below Deck was on the Australian Amazing Race. Also the show has an upstairs/downstairs dynamic we like. It's similar to shows like Downton Abbey.
dexwiz··on 'Active' sitting is better for brain health: review of studies
I don't even think it's the same across viewers. When my partner and I watch some shows, we make prediction for the plot and evaluations of characters. We even have a bet book where we record and score predictions for some shows. It's makes watching much more engaging, especially if the creators hide details and foreshadowing in the background. But you don't even need high quality content to do this, just tighten the restrictions. Law and Order and Hallmark movies only get 30 seconds of content before we make predictions.

It's much more stimulating than just passive consumption. If I don't do this I feel like brain turns to mush after a few hours of TV.

dexwiz··on I'm addicted to being useful
Hobbies are often personal, or at least self serving. Unless your hobby is volunteering. You can hear this in how people talk about out them. "I do this for me."
dexwiz··on San Francisco coyote swims to Alcatraz
Humans also aren't good swimmers, and we assume all land mammals are as bad as us.
dexwiz··on San Francisco coyote swims to Alcatraz
Alcatraz isn't really that far from land, about a mile away. They have events where you can swim to and from it. The currents make it dangerous, but the distance is unremarkable.
dexwiz··on We put Claude Code in Rollercoaster Tycoon
I've never used an LSP plugin half as good as a JetBrains IDE.
dexwiz··on Why have death rates from accidental falls tripled?
Talking to some recent grads (last few years) last summer, parties were pretty much confined to frat parties. The school had a very vibrant house party scene circa 2010, but it sounded dead even pre-Covid. The people I talked to were at a music festival, so high cross over with those who would have attended the parties, not those who spent college locked in a dorm. I was very shocked to hear the difference in experience with within a decade.
