dewyatt··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (September 2016)
I'll detail my experience when applying for a DevOps position.

It took two full months and in the end I did not receive an offer.

The process was roughly:

1) Coding challenge

2) Self-evaluation survey

3) Non-tech interview (be prepared to talk about crying and triggers)

4) Tech interview (break/fix test, login to server and fix)

5) Tech interview (Q&A)

6) Non-tech interview

7) Tech interview

Throughout the process there were multiple miscommunications. There were also technical difficulties where interviewers were not prepared (permissions issues on google docs, had to reschedule).

Twice I was told I was interviewing with Person A and ended up interviewing with Person B. Once I was told it would be a non-tech interview and it was a tech interview. Very disorganized and poor response times to boot.

I see that you failed to read the article.

dewyatt··on AWS increased error rates / intermittent outages
I've had both 500s and 401s interestingly.
dewyatt··on AWS increased error rates / intermittent outages
Sorry guys, I knew I shouldn't have started my 4 instances at once.
dewyatt··on I have nothing to hide
I like to bring out a pad of paper and pencil and ask "what's your bank login?"

Or SSN, etc. Sort of an identity theft angle.

Or "And do you have Facebook? GMail? I'll need those too. You've got nothing to hide, right?"

It's a bit of a flimsy argument but it still makes people think.

Usually they won't give this sort of information to a random person because they're not "The Government". Of course, "The Government" is just made up of regular people, who have their own personal beliefs/motives/etc.

Plus agencies don't have a stellar history of keeping our information secure (OPM hack, etc.).

I don't know anything about this topic, but I do know that this is probably not an appropriate response on HN.

I do agree with some points you make.

dewyatt··on Hacker Releases a How-To Video Targeting Police

dewyatt··on Hacker Releases a How-To Video Targeting Police
Definitely a shitty thing to do, I can't imagine law enforcement won't investigate Chema after seeing that.

I don't understand the language though so there may be other relevant details I'm missing.

dewyatt··on Hacker Releases a How-To Video Targeting Police
I'm thinking it's just misdirection (along with some other parts of the video).

I saw some nice attention to detail in the video so I would be surprised if something like that was an accident.

dewyatt··on React-Boilerplate v3: The “JS Fatigue Antivenin” Edition
To be fair, when I see "Yet moar tweaks" as a commit message, I start to wonder if I am old and curmudgeonly too.

That's my tax dollars at work. :)

dewyatt··on Ask HN: Which hackers do you look up to the most?
I feel you. We're all building on a foundation that is so full of holes that security is like an inside joke.

I'm keeping my eye on TALOS [1], but I admit I haven't had time to research it. It's just one tiny piece of the puzzle though.

dewyatt··on Multiple 7-Zip Vulnerabilities Discovered
I always found it strange that 7-zip appears to be developed by a single individual, despite being very popular.

I know the fact that this lone developer apparently resides in Russia has caused 7-zip to be outright banned in certain places.

dewyatt··on Memory Barriers: A Hardware View for Software Hackers (2010) [pdf]
This is a lot of interesting information. I hope that one day we can avoid this level of complexity though. We have enough to worry about with modern computer systems.

I wrote a driver for FreeBSD recently and had to implement memory barriers to get it accepted into mainline. I had never dealt with memory barriers before and I couldn't help but think "great! what is this new thing I have to keep in mind?" It wasn't all that difficult, but still...

We have built up so many layers of complexity that it's becoming very difficult to secure things, for example. I really hope we can somehow drastically simplify computers/software in the future.

dewyatt··on World's Obese Population Hits 641M
I'm open to it, but based on what?

Lustig studied at MIT+Cornell and is an MD with years of experience. He spent decades researching biochemistry and obesity and published numerous papers on these subjects.

Anthony Colpo, unless I'm mistaken, is just some random guy.

dewyatt··on World's Obese Population Hits 641M
I don't really consider Anthony Colpo to be a reputable source.
dewyatt··on World's Obese Population Hits 641M
I think "Sugar: The Bitter Truth" [1] is worth watching. And the newer "The Skinny on Obesity" [2].

dewyatt··on The Psychological Cost of Boring Buildings
FEMA's Brooke Road Facility (BRF - "the barf") is quite the eye sore [1]. Luckily it's not in a super visible/residential area, but I always found it depressing that people actually work there.

The outside is bad enough, but the inside is even worse. They're all stuffed into cubicles, no windows that I recall, dirty/decrepit bathroom, just a depressing place overall, hard to explain.

dewyatt··on Give yourself permission to have work-life balance
Very similar situation here, turning 27 in September. Spent most of highschool skipping so I could write code instead. No friends nowadays (I prioritize everything else), no serious relationships (no time/energy), never traveled outside USA (money!).

I did, however, just leave a job where I was unhappy. The timing was not great and it cost me. But I couldn't be happier to be free of that job. When I started to seriously dread going in to work, I knew it was time to move on.

Try to realize that not leaving a job because you "can't stand disappointing anyone" is just plain wrong. In a sense, you're doing them a disservice by remaining in a position you are not happy in. You are probably not performing at your best if you're unhappy. Plus, startup or not, they would probably drop you like a bad habit if given the financial incentive. Business is business, money is always the bottom line in that environment. You do not owe them anything.

dewyatt··on Hacker Monthly Shuts Down
What a shame, I didn't know Hacker Monthly was even a thing until today. Now I want a subscription so badly.

dewyatt··on Hacking Team hacked, attackers claim 400GB in dumped data
Looks like libtorrent-rasterbar based clients are not able to handle the dump (bencoded item limit). Transmission is working (slowly).
