devwastaken··on Amazon workers to strike at multiple US warehouses during busy holiday season
almost none. its time to implement anonymous online id systems.
devwastaken··on Review of Mullvad VPN
Datacenters that allow port forwarding for VPNs are incentivized to monitor that traffic. there are no free lunches.
devwastaken··on DMA: Litigation Against Apple
repeal intellectual property law and you will have proper competition by tomorrow.
devwastaken··on We outsmarted CSGO cheaters with IdentityLogger
banning by public IP is a rookie mistake. ISP will change their IP automatically over time, they charge extra for static IP. So what youre actually doing is banning anyone who ever receives that IP in the future.
devwastaken··on Fraud, so much fraud
Universities became tax funded and the consequences is warm bodies filling chairs. I have experience with a number of big name unis in the U.S. they are all about office and national politics. It's not about the work and hasn't been for a while now.

Defund universities. No more student loans, make them have to earn their place in the market or we will continue to suffer under the manipulated system that is actually killing students.

devwastaken··on Say No to the Paywall of PCI-E Bifurcation
https://www.asus.com/us/support/faq/1037507/

Under CPU section.

devwastaken··on Say No to the Paywall of PCI-E Bifurcation
Looking at asus's 4x nvme bifurcation card you cannot use an igpu enabled processor and maintain 4x4 with any CPU. I don't want to fill a slot with a dedicated GPU.

For a NAS I don't need 4 in a pool, just 2 per slot works fine with HDD backups.

devwastaken··on Show HN: iFixit created a new USB-C, repairable soldering system
Buy a pinecil instead, it has proper tips and a good price.

Ifixit fails to produce good tools because all they've done in the last 5 years is coast on their bit sets. They're not people who actually work with these tools. If they were the LTT screwdriver wouldn't have needed to be built.

Hundreds of dollars for what is done for $50 is a clear example of attempting to turn ifixit into a brand that sells tools not a tool designer that sells effective solutions.

devwastaken··on New York Times tech workers union votes to authorize a strike
You're not getting a job in programming without a social in. The people hiring you don't understand the job. That's what happens when things become big, bloated, and need to be popped. Tech has control of all modern nations down to the military and infrastructure. Nobody is tangibly regulating and pushing back on their power.
devwastaken··on New York Times tech workers union votes to authorize a strike
The tech cartel faang and adjacent. People talk to each other.
devwastaken··on New York Times tech workers union votes to authorize a strike
All of those things are based overwhelmingly on social circles and politics. Not merit. If the world were based on merit we wouldn't be afraid of free markets and we wouldn't have mega corps. Yet, here we are.
devwastaken··on New York Times tech workers union votes to authorize a strike
This is because software dev is a volatile market. It doesn't matter how "talented" you are, it's about your rank in the social circles and it shows in the product.

There is now far more devs than there is work for them. This is a planned strategy to reduce salaries.

If you're "talented". Make your money and get out asap.

devwastaken··on Entrepreneurship changed the way I think
It also changed how I think - it's a bunch of clubs that decide the rules in their benefit. If you're not rubbing shoulders with them youre not getting anywhere.

Tech and entrepreneurship needs regulation to promote competition.

devwastaken··on Thoughts while watching myself be automated
Automation sounds cool until you look at the market and realize that by the time you've tooled it, you need to make different products that require different tooling.

It's not like automating Minecraft and eventually "winning" at not having to do anything.

In order to do this complex process you need humans with emotions and you need iterative R&D that requires creativity not just in the nerdy engineering but across the spectrum in all elements. The human one is especially difficult to get right.

devwastaken··on Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?
Anti cheat is DRM. It's added specifically to make it so modifications are DRM circumvention and therefore copyright infringement. This isnt to protect the player, but forced by big suit investors to "protect their investment".

The best anti cheat is proper net code. Games rarely do this because it's expensive and difficult. Consumers will buy it anyways.

Anti cheat overtop is like calling an open window with a loud Weiner dog guarding it "defense in depth".

devwastaken··on Mpv – A free, open-source, and cross-platform media player
The only player that has proper HDR playback support and proper HDR to SDR conversion plus GPU accel.
devwastaken··on How can Firefox create the best support for web apps on the desktop?
Firefox lost that market a long time ago. Electron won because chromium is modular, the tech can be re-used for other purposes. Firefox lost because it's a monolith you can't use in your projects.

WPA's and webviews are non solutions. You can't have web sandboxing and also the privileges a desktop app needs. Wasm is a failed experiment that did not result in the performance improvements promised. You still need to compile C++ modules for all kinds of things.

devwastaken··on Room inspections at Resorts World confuse, annoy DEF CON attendees
The "inspection" was reportedly carried out in a threatening and illegal manner that held attendees against their will and coerced them to give up private belongings.

The DA should prosecute the "security staff" for their illegal acts and make an example out of them. This is not the first time a hotel has done this, and they will continue to act outside the law until those responsible face felonies and prison time.

devwastaken··on FUTO Warrant Canary
"we updated our terms of service as usual and a staff member accidentally deleted it."

Corps get away with a lot because they don't actually operate as single entities even if the law artificially treats them as one.

devwastaken··on Mozilla wants you to love Firefox again
Dump gecko and spider monkey and build a UI over webkit. A "firefox safari" that properly integrates system password management/account management and is convenient to use.

Firefox tech is dead and not modular. It has no use to anyone else and is a major waste of resources.

devwastaken··on Proton announces release of a new VPN protocol, "Stealth"
Protonvpn is protonmail. They're the same company. They choose to operate in a way that allows user IP's to be given for arbitrary political reasons. They will do it with VPN too if they're "requested".
devwastaken··on Proton announces release of a new VPN protocol, "Stealth"
Protonvpn logged ips at the request of the Swiss government on behalf of the French government as a political favor.

https://www.theverge.com/2021/9/6/22659861/protonmail-swiss-...

Protonvpn does log data and does hand it over. It doesn't matter if they "had to" (they can fight) You can't put the genie back in the bottle.

devwastaken··on Artificial intelligence gives weather forecasters a new edge
In the U S. There is a lack of data input to create meaningful predictions because there is a lack of Doppler radar stations.

https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/maps/radar/

Need far more sites to gain full coverage, but no doubt they'll be strongly opposed by red disinformation.

devwastaken··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Deflecting. You live in a society of powers. You're not an individual free of them and their consequences just because they didn't target you this time. If you were truly comfortable you would have good reasons to support their decision other than "it wasn't me this time!". Most of society is not happy with the status quo, why do you think they're so unhappy?
devwastaken··on Fake job interviews are securities fraud
The most incorrect assumption about stock is the idea that it's based on reason of metrics and evidence. In reality it is orchestrated by handshaking of existing wealth. Value is whatever they want it to be.

What would happen is the information goes ignored for the corps in good graces, and used negatively for the ones already going under as a small bullet point.

If you want markets based on sane economics this isn't the one to be in.

devwastaken··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
The same way it's good for you to push them to do better.
devwastaken··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Change doesn't come from placation of an existing system.
devwastaken··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Advocating against yourself.
devwastaken··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Then time for them to group up and change the game. Not going to make excuses for corps. It's their responsibility to push, not mine to apologize for them.
devwastaken··on Stripe acquires Lemon Squeezy
Stripe is not at any risk of having services cut by payment processors. They can leverage an excellent case against them if so. It's time they and the others get together and dunk on Mastercard before they decide to eat the whole pie.
