devsquid··on Welcome Chris Lattner
I find Swift to be getting worse each year. While sure i'm blessed that I don't have to write applications in assemble, I have grown jaded towards Swift. If it wasn't because I am an iOS developer, I would happily not use the language. I have been slowly positioning myself away from doing iOS development. I feel like a massive corporation like Apple can provide better tools to write apps for their walled garden than what they are providing me.
devsquid··on Welcome Chris Lattner
You find it better than before? I find that Swift 3.+ is drastically worse than Swift 2.
devsquid··on Welcome Chris Lattner
Oh? I meant it as a srs question. I wasn't sure what parts I should include. But thanks for essentially saying most of it.

I should mention I also find the community to be sorta toxic. They are so focused on Swift being the one language to rule them all and they use terms like "Swifty".

Well I'm sure he's a very experienced manager for technical projects and also brings a large amount of experience with compilers to the table.

His online presence always has that Apple Arrogance™ to it. Thats coming from someone who was born and raised an Apple fan.

Do you use Swift at all?

-edit- I meant it as a serious question. But the person who responded to me sums up the issues.

devsquid··on Dart in 2016: Fastest growing language at Google, 2nd fastest in TIOBE
The dev compiler translates Dart code into human readable JS code. So you can write a library in Dart and still provide JS code someone could realistically adapt to their environment or if Dart were to go away it would allow you an easy path of escape.

I know the first thing I thought about was does this mean Tesla's going to start writing its software in Swift. If so they are fucked :P. (BTW I write non-critical consumer software in Swift as my day job)
devsquid··on Dart in 2016: Fastest growing language at Google, 2nd fastest in TIOBE
I think they mentioned some gains in the size of the compiled JS. I don't remember tho.
devsquid··on Dart in 2016: Fastest growing language at Google, 2nd fastest in TIOBE
Yea actually I forgot about how slow it was to compile to JS. They are saying it should around 100MS now to do a dev compile. So its feasible to use other browsers actively during development. That is probably the biggest thing for me they announced at the Dart Con.

ARC is a whole debate, but the one thing it is not is simple and I would argue its more error prone than a traditional GC. I've used it for most of my career and I have seen what sloppy/unaware coding can do to it.

Lattner is a well known expert on compilers. Having used Swift since its inception, I would call into question the reliability of the Swift LLVM compiler. In its current state (3.0.2) its absolutely terrible and does not back up the sentiment; "But fast-moving Silicon Valley needs a fundamental shift in quality standards when it comes to safety-critical software, and if you look closely, Lattner has been leading this charge at the language and compiler level".

devsquid··on Dart in 2016: Fastest growing language at Google, 2nd fastest in TIOBE
The one issue I had with Dart, was typing was optional. But at the last DartCon they announced they are creating a strong typed mode, which forces typing and type correctness and it generates higher preforming code. Yay!
devsquid··on Dart in 2016: Fastest growing language at Google, 2nd fastest in TIOBE
Yea I found just using plane Dart to work really well. I preferred it over Angular. I had an entire functioning web app in about 80kbs, including all images, html, css, and JS. That was a while back, I'm sure its only gotten better.

ObjC (probably a little Swift just to test if its ready yet), C, and probably tons more like most huge tech companies :P
devsquid··on Democrats Are 3 Times More Likely to Unfriend You on Social Media
You are being forced to nice to each other?? I'm confused what you are talking about.
devsquid··on Democrats Are 3 Times More Likely to Unfriend You on Social Media
"Safe Spaces" and "Political Correctness" are not censorship. They are about changing cultural interactions. I'm not a real "supporter" of either ideologies, but I believe its good to be nice to each other.
devsquid··on Democrats Are 3 Times More Likely to Unfriend You on Social Media
How is that "winning"?
devsquid··on Democrats Are 3 Times More Likely to Unfriend You on Social Media
From my exp I had three hard line Trump supports remove me. I don't generally post anything on FB, but I do sometimes point out issues with other peoples posts.

One removed me because he posted all these things about how it wasn't fair people called him racist, so I told him my personal experience of him calling Mexicans, Native Americans, and other people lazy and that that was racist.

Then two others stopped talking to me over chat because I debated them on their beliefs that poor people are only poor because they are lazy, immigrants are not here to have sex with "our" women, Muslims are not inherently evil, and on and on. They quickly grew tired of me poking flaws and not being a "liberal strawman" like they wanted and they stopped talking to me.

I'm not a democrat, but man it was a nasty election...

devsquid··on Hawaii's Final Sugar Cargo Departs Maui Aboard 'Moku Pahu'
Also what do we do with all of that land, now that we aren't going to grow sugar cane or pineapples on it. I don't thing any of the islands can house many more people.
devsquid··on Things You Notice When You Quit the News
Yay! More pride of ignorance...
devsquid··on My Pixel has a manufacturing defect
Huh strange, I've had excellent customer experience with GCE and Google in general. AWS also has excellent customer support.
devsquid··on Trouble at Cyanogen
Especially when Cyanogen was the worst thing about the One+
devsquid··on Russian Agents Are Not Behind Every Piece of Fake News You See
This is an odd sentiment. Most of the reporting around fake new shows it comes from entrepreneurial people, some I would say are morally suspect, but I have never seen any reporting show it going back to nation states. Its just clever people take advantage of people awful biases.
devsquid··on Twitter suspends alt-right figureheads
waaa you are a confused individual.

wut r u talking about? -_-
devsquid··on Pixel Security
Kinda neat they link directly to some source code in a blog post.
devsquid··on An App Saw Trump Winning Swing States When Polls Didn't
We can be pretty certain its not the case. But that statement has been spreading around.

Trump: Yeah, that’s her. With the gold. I better use some Tic Tacs just in case I start kissing her. You know, I’m automatically attracted to beautiful — I just start kissing them. It’s like a magnet. Just kiss. I don’t even wait. And when you’re a star, they let you do it. You can do anything.

Bush: Whatever you want.

Trump: Grab ’em by the pussy. You can do anything.

You are saying that's not misogyny?

He's talking about using his celebrity status to take advantage of women.

This type of arguments get so tiring: ""Mexican" is not a race." Sure, but if I say all British are drunks, you aren't going to correct me and say oh I think you meant to say "Anglo-Saxons".

The quote “When Mexico sends its people, they’re not sending their best. They’re not sending you. They’re not sending you. They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Getting over the fact that the quote seems to say Mexico itself is actively "sending" its people to the US. He said the Mexican people immigrating to the US are "mostly" rapists. Am I misquoting him?

"is either a lie", "for much different reasons than your made up ones." where am I lying?

Whats crazy is how often people want to debate these points... This year has been strawmen all the way down.

"it just sets the humanity a few years back"

Life is short man. Its not like in four years we can just simple turn back the clock and fix everything. We elected someone who openly molested women, I can't imagine how that must feel to a woman.

We don't know yet what the federal government will do about climate change. It doesn't look like they will do a lot tho. We still don't fully understand the problem, who knows. "a few years" could be meaningless or it could be everything...

devsquid··on Trump Won Because Leftist Political Correctness Inspired a Terrifying Backlash
Yea I always thought that was ironic. Because "right-wing" people keeps pointing out times where individuals get "triggered" by someone saying something. IE a person's feelings got hurt when someone made fun of them for something important to them.

If someone DARES point out that that comment was bigoted the "right-winged" person gets soooo triggered. I've watched whole you-tube videos of a guy being made someone called him racist after he said a racist thing... The right is a very angry place right now.
