devonnull··on Ask HN: What will happen to trust when AI floods online interactions?
Your circle of trust will become smaller and smaller, until you can only trust yourself. Even then, you'll have the occasional nagging doubt.
devonnull··on Ask HN: How are obvious spam emails still able to make it into my Gmail inbox?
Spammers are always coming up with ways of getting 'round spam filters. It happens with every email provider. It takes a little while for the providers to adapt to the new tactics. So, keep marking what's spam as spam. Every little bit helps.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why don't word processors have tabs like spreadsheets?
Actually, it was (as I recall) received with a chuckle. People didn't seem to mind, but YW never really took off because 1) it was rather niche (meant for personal use), and 2) the interface was very different from word processors at the time. Or even now.
devonnull··on Penpot, Open Source Figma alternative, raises $8M in funding
That's impressive growth. I just hope that Penpot can quickly scale to support such sudden growth.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why don't word processors have tabs like spreadsheets?
Something like that was tried with a word processor created in the 90s called Yeah Write, but it never really caught on. Maybe there isn't much demand for that, especially for the use case you mentioned.
devonnull··on Show HN: Another Darn To-Do List App
+1 for the name! :-)

But I'm debating whether to give this a -1 because I get a blank page when I click the terms of use link.

devonnull··on Canonical/Snapcraft websites are down
All seem to be back up at 4:29 pm (PST).
devonnull··on Ask HN: Are Embedded Engineers Slaves?
Huh? What are you on about?
devonnull··on Show HN: Where do you find people to cowork with?
A lot of the replies to this post read like astroturfing. Some people are shameless in their promotion, aren't they?
devonnull··on Ask HN: Have we reached a tipping point when web apps are faster than native?
How many such apps have you noticed this with? And have you done any benchmarking or collection of data? Or is this all anecdotal?
devonnull··on Ask HN: Are mini breaks worth it?
>Society looks down on people who take breaks, which seems crazy.

Is that society as a whole, the people in the groups in which you circulate, or is it that you've been influenced (whether you meant to or not) by the warped ethos of hustle culture or the Always Be Grinding mindset? There's more to life than work, even in your 20s and 30s.

devonnull··on Ask HN: Does IndieHackers have a broken web architecture or is it just me?
Tried it at around 3:05 pm (PST) and didn't notice the problems you described. Did that using Firefox, Vivaldi, and Web.

Have you tried again since running into those problems?

devonnull··on Time Travel
Only one way to find out ...
devonnull··on Ask HN: Where do you eat your lunch?
I make my own (whether I'm working from home or working in the office; the latter is rarer these days). At home, I eat lunch at the breakfast bar in my kitchen. At the office, I use the open cafeteria area. Both to get away from my desk, even for a few minutes.
devonnull··on JetBrains Mono, A typeface for developers (2021)
It's actually quite good even if you're not a developer, but work with a lot of plain text in a text editor.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Switching to a desktop after 15 years of exclusive laptop use?
>I am curious to see if using a desktop as a primary driver will clean up my work life balance

Will it though? I'm unconvinced. Besides not being able to get up and move yourself and your primary tool for working to those other locations, I'm not entirely clear about how working on a desktop will be any (if at all) different from working with a laptop.

That said, please post a follow up in 30 days or so. I'm very curious to learn about your experiences.

devonnull··on Amazon Drive is shutting down
Wonder how many people will wait until the last minute to clear out their Amazon Drives and complain that Amazon didn't give them enough time or notice ...
devonnull··on Note-taking isn't rocket science
Hear, hear!
devonnull··on Musk cited possible “World War III” as reason to break Twitter deal, text shows
That's stretching things more than just a little bit ...
devonnull··on My post on why I use a Chromebox went viral on Hacker News
I'm not sure why the author of that post felt the need to write a follow up. Using ChromeOS is his choice. It might not mesh with the choices of others, but so what? We're all different and have different needs. Just because ChromeOS isn't what you (and I mean the more general you and not the person who submitted this to HN) or I would use doesn't make it the wrong choice for the author of the post.
devonnull··on Poolin, One of the Largest Bitcoin Mining Pools,Suspends Withdrawals from Wallet
Hmm. I wonder why ...
devonnull··on Don't keep all your digital services with one company
Simple, practical, and (you'd think) obvious advice. Which is often ignored for the sake of convenience.
devonnull··on Lukoil chairman of the board dies, fall from hospital window blamed
Doesn't sound suspicious at all. Not in the least. And if you believe that ...
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why don't computing devices protect themselves from physical harm?
Because there are no legit self protection courses for computers. They all wind up going to a McDojo and learning techniques that just don't work.
devonnull··on The Humiliating History of the TSA
I was around when the TSA was founded, though I'm not American. And I recall all the rationales for this (what seemed at the time) hastily created organization. Still, it's been a lot of years and little to show for all the expense and time wasted. Security theatre indeed.
devonnull··on The Humiliating History of the TSA
>There’s no evidence two decades of pat-downs and shoe removal have made travelers any safer — so why does the theater of airport security persist?

I, and everyone I know who travels, asks this all the time. Other than the TSA being an employment scheme, I don't have an answer to that question.

devonnull··on Quote Salute – Inspiring salutations for your correspondence
After watching the third season of For All Mankind, I now want to use My good dumpling as the default salutation for all my correspondence.
devonnull··on Is Over, Bye GitHub
And yet the page at the end of the link is on GitHub. Hmm ...
devonnull··on Show HN: Paydii.com – a Gumroad alternative built on Stacks blockchain
Stacks used to be called Blockstack and is described as an open-source platform to build smart contracts and decentralized blockchain applications.
devonnull··on Lentils or Rice
All that layering stuff ... it's a bit too complex for me :-)
