devinfoley··on Show HN: Denso - An Instapaper for Video
As does Vimeo.
devinfoley··on Turntable.fm raising $5-10 M. at $40 M. Valuation
http://www.businessinsider.com/turntablefm-rumored-to-be-rai...

Confirmed: 7.5M at 37.5M valuation.

I'd be very interested in seeing how this played out for the investors in StickyBits.

devinfoley··on [dead]
Last I heard, AdSense runs entirely on MySQL. They tried migrating to Oracle for some reason, but backed out.
devinfoley··on Convince your boss to let you use Scala
Having done a lot of coding in both Groovy and Scala, I would agree that Groovy takes the smallest mental shift. However, if you require static typing, Scala is your answer.
devinfoley··on Speed up your eclipse as a super fast IDE
I use vim for everything but Java. When it's Java time, I use Eclipse. In fact, if every language worked as well in Eclipse as Java does, I'd probably use Eclipse for everything (like I used to). The productivity gains you get from using Eclipse for Java vs a text editor (vim) are HUGE. This is not a fault of vim, it's a fault of Java for being so verbose.

Example: you can move a method to a new class in Java, and Eclipse will go through your entire project and find all references to that method and update them for you.

I guess it's the same reason C# and MS coders love Visual Studio so much.

That said, I try to avoid using Java, and generally stick to vim.

devinfoley··on Why Scala seems difficult but really isn’t
Damn, I wish I'd known about this sooner. Thanks!
devinfoley··on Why Scala seems difficult but really isn’t
I forgot about Groovy++.
devinfoley··on Why Scala seems difficult but really isn’t
He actually states becoming an expert in Scala in 3 weeks should not be expected, not learning Scala.
devinfoley··on Why Scala seems difficult but really isn’t
You forgot "fast". The perfect Java replacement would also have to be as fast as Java. Groovy, Jython, allow you to program on the JVM more easily, but unfortunately run much slower than Java. One major benefit of Scala is that it runs at pretty much the same speed as Java.
devinfoley··on Why Scala seems difficult but really isn’t
Scala introduces new versions of collections like Map and List that aren't compatible with Java's versions. The syntactic sugar only works with the Scala Maps.

Meanwhile, Groovy uses Java collections.

devinfoley··on The Way I Work: David Karp of Tumblr
"Every feature has some maintenance cost, and having fewer features lets us focus on the ones we care about and make sure they work very well. For every new feature we add, we take an old one out. A lot of big sites don't do that, and it's a problem."

Very well put.

devinfoley··on Not So Fast: Sony's PlayStation Network Hacked Again
I couldn't figure out how to delete my account from the PSN website. I don't own a PS3 anymore but I still have an account, which is a bummer.
devinfoley··on Meet Craiggers: It Blows Craigslist Out of The Water
I work on the project. It would help me out greatly if you could email the details of your search to me at dfoley@3taps.com. We really should have all of the data.

Were you typing your location into the search box? That might explain the difference. We don't currently support typing your location into the text box, but maybe we should.

Thanks!

devinfoley··on Meet Craiggers: It Blows Craigslist Out of The Water
Well, you can search across multiple locations/categories and there's saved searches and favorites.
devinfoley··on Meet Craiggers: It Blows Craigslist Out of The Water
Thanks. That's not normal. We're definitely experiencing some slowdown from the traffic spike.
devinfoley··on Meet Craiggers: It Blows Craigslist Out of The Water
Which part specifically? I work on the project so any feedback I get is very valuable!
devinfoley··on MacBook Air is enough for a work machine
I've thought of ditching my monitor for this reason many times.
devinfoley··on Ask HN: how to become a morning person?
I have definitely become more of a morning person since becoming a dad, but not because the kid wakes me up. My wife handles the baby in the morning. I just find myself waking up early so I can spend some time with the baby before I have to work.
devinfoley··on Vim Movement Shortcuts Wallpaper
I came across this today and was surprised it had not been posted on HN yet. It's mostly the basics, but I thought it might help some vim students out.
devinfoley··on Introducing Prompt. Nice SSH for iOS.
I downloaded it. I was a long time iSSH user on iPhone and iPad (with external keyboard). I'll be using this instead. Emulation looks better, arrow keys are easier to find and use, and it looks better. I'm a sucker for a pretty face.
devinfoley··on Introducing Prompt. Nice SSH for iOS.
I've been using iSSH for a long time. I can't get the arrow keys to work. And even when I use a bluetooth keyboard, I can't get the CNTRL key to work.

Prompt seems to have fixed these issues, and I'm really happy to give them my $5.

devinfoley··on Running a Modern Startup on PHP
I've been using Paraglide as well, and it is indeed very cool.
devinfoley··on Play Framework (full stack Java framework with Scala) v1.2 released
This really sounds great. I can't wait to check it out.

I've been hoping for a Java-based framework that can compete with the Rails and Djangos for a while. I made the mistake of investing my time in Grails, and really regret it.

I've been wanting to use Scala for building web apps, but Lift reminds me of J2EE all over again. Hopefully Play! with Scala can get it right.

devinfoley··on 3taps and Creative Commons Hackathon in SF (April 23rd)
I set up a Convore group as well: http://convore.com/3taps-hackathon/
devinfoley··on MessageParty (The Remix): A New Service For Location-Based Blogging (YC S10)
Any idea of when this will launch in LA/SF? I'd like to try it.
devinfoley··on 3taps Wants to Democratize the Exchange of Data
I work for 3taps. If anybody needs help getting started with our APIs/data, feel free to contact me directly.
devinfoley··on XMPP over websockets [HTML5]
Very cool! I might switch from OpenFire to ejabbered just to use this if it continues to mature.
devinfoley··on Craigslist has been disrupted
Also craiggers.com
devinfoley··on The Secrets of Building Realtime Big Data Systems
I love that the slide after "[Data systems must be] 1. Robust to machine failure" is an error "Oops! This slide did not convert properly hence cannot be displayed." Oh the irony.
devinfoley··on Mozilla Glow: Awesome Firefox 4 live download day map
Hey thanks! I'll fix that. Honestly I haven't done any work on the app or site since last summer. I had some pretty good adoption at first, but usage really fell off because, well, it wasn't providing enough value. Then I had a baby and my time suddenly became a lot more scarce/valuable.
