dev_tty01··on PhD students face cash crisis with wages that don’t cover living costs
A PhD has never been about economics. It is about impacting the type of work you do and how much control you have over the direction of that work. Want to work in a major research lab? Get a PhD. Want to be a professor building a research program in an area of your choosing (assuming available funding)? PhD required.
dev_tty01··on Intel plans immersion lab to chill its power-hungry chips
Absolutely. This is the wrong direction. Lots of power to run the chips, then lots more power to cool them. The ARM server market is eventually going to eat them alive if they can't rearchitect and seriously up their performance/watt game. I hope this is just an intermediate term solution.
dev_tty01··on Meld for Macs
If this doesn't exist, it should. Good idea.
dev_tty01··on Meld for Macs
Not meaning to be rude, but how is this relevant? Should no one ever buy or discuss anything that someone else, somewhere else couldn't afford? That is just not realistic and I think you are ascribing a fragility to that student that is condescending. That student knows how the world works, including all of its distribution of wealth issues. Give them some credit, they can take care of themselves. As for the software, there are lots of free alternatives.
dev_tty01··on Modernizing AWK, a 45-year old language, by adding CSV support
I think getting awk to recognize that a field separator within a quoted string should be ignored is a great addition. This is not inconsistent with the "unix way." Many, many unix tools recognize that a quoted string should be treated as a separate entity. The more unix-like approach would have been to force users to remove quotes if they want awk to split strings based on field separators within quotes. In hindsight, I'm surprised the quote respecting option wasn't added a long time ago.
dev_tty01··on Solid-state cells will cut EV charging time and increase volumetric density
>Which means "First commercially viable" part of the title is a bit of marketing propaganda wank.

Not necessarily. If they are confident they can build it in volume at a cost equal to or less than existing batteries, then by definition they are justified in calling it commercially viable.

dev_tty01··on Preview, the Mac app people forget about
Create Smart Folders and sort by date, type, location, etc... Whatever you want. Then open the folder. You can tell Finder to use View as Gallery in those folders.

You can also just continue to use Grid view and tell Finder to use large preview icons in that folder.

dev_tty01··on U.S. takes unprecedented steps to replenish Colorado River's Lake Powell
I did a calculation to get a sense of the enormity of these numbers and to consider what it would take to replace this water release with desalination. The release is 500,000 acre-feet, or about 163G gallons (326/000 gal/af). According to Wikipedia, the Keystone Phase III pipeline can deliver 700,000 barrels/day, or 29.4M gallons/day (oil barrels are 42 gallons). Setting aside the 7% flow rate differences between water and oil, an equivalent pipeline would take over 5,500 days, or over 15 years to deliver that much water.

Or to put it another way, the 7.5M acre-feet per year deliverable in the Colorado River Compact would take over 225 pipelines to achieve the same flow rate.

So, for desalination to have any significant impact, we would have to build a huge number of desalination plants and pipelines and provide massive power for the plants and the energy to pump all that water uphill.

Sort Downloads by Kind. Select the group of photos. Double click. They will all be opened in one Preview window and you can scroll through all the photos.

Or, select the first, touch the space bar and you will see the Quick Look preview. Use the arrow keys to move between the different files.

Not really seeing the messssss, but to each their own I guess.

dev_tty01··on Heroku Security Notification
Got it. Thanks.
dev_tty01··on Heroku Security Notification
Which credentials are you referring to? They reported the loss of OAuth tokens on April 15. What am I missing?

https://status.heroku.com/incidents/2413

"On April 13, 2022, Salesforce Security was notified by GitHub that a subset of Heroku’s GitHub private repositories, including some source code, was downloaded by a threat actor on April 9, 2022. Based on Salesforce’s initial investigation, it appears that unauthorized access to Heroku's GitHub account was the result of a compromised OAuth token. Salesforce immediately disabled the compromised user’s OAuth tokens and disabled the compromised user’s GitHub account. Additionally, GitHub reported that the threat actor was enumerating GitHub customer accounts using OAuth tokens issued to Heroku’s OAuth integration dashboard hosted on GitHub. Based on the information GitHub shared with us, we are investigating how the threat actor gained access to customer OAuth tokens. The compromised tokens could provide the threat actor access to customer GitHub repos, but not customer Heroku accounts. With the access to customer OAuth tokens, the threat actor may have read and write access to customer GitHub repositories connected to Heroku. Given the incident is still active, please review the recommended actions provided below."

dev_tty01··on The strange business of hole-in-one insurance
Not here in the US. It is really kind of stupid.
dev_tty01··on The strange business of hole-in-one insurance
That little drain feeds into the same pipe and trap. If the pipe is clogged, that little drain hole is useless. The purpose of the drain hole is saving your bacon when you intentionally plug the sink drain to collect some water and then forget to turn it off.
dev_tty01··on A first for Canada: New type of nuclear plant opening by 2028
How does solar produce substantial power in northern and southern latitudes for several months of the year? How about at night? How about during long cloudy periods? Solar usually ends up with carbon based backup. It should be nuclear instead. For solar to really work, it will take massive energy storage capabilities. That is NOT ready to deploy. Until then, solar will only be a partial solution at best.

Anyone who wants carbon free power generation should be pro-solar AND pro-nuclear.

dev_tty01··on Grindr user data has been for sale for years
You are fortunate to have grown up in a culture where that is mostly true. However, in some cultures, the "shame" of that disclosure about their child is considered worse than death. Horrifically sad, but true.
dev_tty01··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
The system is so poorly designed, who's to say his unusual behavior will be handled properly? That second 10K might just disappear. He let curiosity override the rational, cynical side of his brain. It happens.
dev_tty01··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
Yeah, I would think this was a dark pattern, but it was probably just simple incompetence. The refund process sounds like it must involve humans and is therefore expensive. Presumably the system had his id number, as you said, a simple data lookup and filter to avoid over deposits would make much more sense. Setting aside the authors bad decisions, he really was dealing with a ridiculously poor system design.
dev_tty01··on I got a computer science degree in 3 months for less than $5000 (2020)
Many state universities are forced by state law to reduce the admittance requirements, especially for in-state students. State taxes are paying part of the university budget and it is politically valuable to keep those universities widely accessible. As a result, the schools are forced to do additional screening in the first year.

I think this is actually a reasonable policy since it allows for someone who has great potential but lacks the maturity to apply themselves in lower grades. They still have an opportunity to turn things around and become substantial contributors.

dev_tty01··on Using Asahi Linux as a developer workstation
>> ... while Apple didn’t help port Linux to the M1 (Asahi developers had to reverse engineer everything), they designed the M1 to allow for the installation and booting of other operating systems. >Isn't it sad that this is supposed to be a big deal?

Who said this is a big deal? You are the only one calling it a big deal. It is not a big deal. Apple has in the past and is continuing to make booting other OSes possible on the Mac. Business as usual.

As far as full featured, Asahi isn't full featured yet. When was the last time a new Linux port to an entirely new computer design was full featured right out of the gate? Not a useful criticism.

Yeah, wouldn't it be terrible if we all had to run very fast and efficient computers with really high memory bandwidth? Oh the misery. The vast majority of consumers don't give a toss about any of the faux concerns you've raised.

dev_tty01··on Musk announces funding secured for Twitter buy
Well, the jury is still out on that. Musk claims funding was secured and he was forced to settle with the SEC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vzY_jIJaZwk

Hard to really know the facts, but things may not be as they appear. In this case however, he has filed the SEC docs to verify that funding is secured.

Is this perhaps just a file system formatting issue? Disk Utility (there is no Disk Inspector) should tell you how they have been formatted. You mentioned reading from them. Can you erase them? Tried different cables?
dev_tty01··on Operating Systems: CPU Scheduling
Classic MacOS did the same thing. Basically, all GUI processes call GetNextEvent() at the head of the event loop. In 1985 Andy Hertzfeld wrote Switcher which used the GetNextEvent() entry point to pause an app and allow another app to run until the next call. Hertzfeld got the idea from the DOS utility Memory Shift.

https://www.folklore.org/StoryView.py?project=Macintosh&stor...

With well behaved apps it worked remarkably well. Apple brought it into the OS as MultiFinder.
