dev_tty01··on Apollo 8 astronaut William Anders ID'd in WA plane crash
If you follow your argument to a logical conclusion it would require that we ban millions of people with mild impairments from operating machines. That is the worst kind of ageism, discrimination, and ableism.

Imagine that you studied and went through pilot training and got your license. Do you really believe that when you start solo flying that you, an inexperienced pilot, would be a safer pilot than someone like Bill Anders at 90? Experience, guile, and cunning count for far more than you can imagine.

When my mother was getting older I looked at age related accident data. I apologize that I don't have the reference handy, but it was quite striking that teenagers are far more likely to have an accident than an elderly driver. I guess we should ban teenagers from driving also? Experience matters a great deal.

How about if we find that recent immigrants are more likely to have an accident due to lack of familiarity with local driving regs? According to your logic we should make a law banning immigrants from driving. And on and on...

As far as your comments about military service, even if we are anti-war (who isn't?), it is still possible to admire the hero who is willing to put their life on the line to defend their community.

dev_tty01··on Xylitol is associated with cardiovascular risk
Thanks. That's a substantial ratio. Hazen's group is at the Cleveland clinic and has done a lot of good work so there is something there. Anything on how much Xylitol use is required to get to that risk level?
dev_tty01··on Xylitol is associated with cardiovascular risk
How much risk? How much Xylitol? Disappointed those numbers aren't mentioned in the results section. Without seeing more, leaving that out leads me to suspect that the risk is low and the level of Xylitol is quite high. The links to get access to the article weren't working for me. Anyone have another link?
dev_tty01··on Vulkan1.3 on the M1 in one month
> Metal only covers Apple. Vulkan covers so much more.

I'm not sure "more" is the right term here. There are about 1.3 billion iPhone users worldwide. Sure, Vulkan covers more OS environments, but how important is that to a game developer vs. total available users? Does Vulkan user reach exceed 1.3 billion?

dev_tty01··on Periodic Table of the Elements, in Pictures and Words (2005)
Stone, sand, and soil for Silicon? No mention of integrated circuits, the single most impactful tech in recent history? Meanwhile, Germanium, gets the semiconductor electronics mention. Yes, Germanium is used in certain IC processes, but Silicon has orders of magnitudes more use in semiconductor electronics. Seems like an extremely odd choice to relegate Silicon to nothing more than stone, sand, and soil.
dev_tty01··on Feynman's Garden
Well, it is both of course. Why assume a binary process? Several solutions are probably grown, considered, and evaluated and one begins to gain precedence. That one then finally becomes apparent and is revealed.
dev_tty01··on iPhone 15 Pro Storage Expansion – 128GB to 512GB [video]
It is not ridiculous. SD slot is much slower than the built-in NAND. iPhone SSD read speeds are about 1200 MB/sec, about 500 MB/sec write. The OS is optimized to take advantage of that fast, contiguous, and reliable memory.
dev_tty01··on iPhone 15 Pro Storage Expansion – 128GB to 512GB [video]
No need to remove it. Just turn off the LTE radio in settings.
dev_tty01··on U-M finds students with alphabetically lower-ranked names receive lower grades
Having hired a lot of engineers, I can tell you that mastery of material is nothing close to a bimodal distribution.
dev_tty01··on Boeing's problems has cost United $200M in Q1 2024
In 2022, globally, there was one accident per 664,186 flights. [1] That includes a lot of poorly funded airlines and a lot of very old aircraft. The 737 Max numbers you present are worse than the global average when they should be much better for a well designed modern aircraft.

[1] https://www.statista.com/chart/31529/most-airplane-accidents...

This is not even considering the numerous documented issues with their quality control programs. Also, the global average I referred to are for accidents, not crashes like your numbers.

dev_tty01··on Tesla Cybertruck deliveries halted for 7 days
I don't think you are being downvoted for "pointing out that a cheaper Lexus doesn't have this issue." The downvote is likely for being rude about it.

Every one of the M series chips has had dedicated AI hardware. AI focus has been in the hardware for years.
dev_tty01··on M 4.8 – 2024 Whitehouse Station, New Jersey Earthquake
As an easterner who lived in California for many years, the breathless news coverage of a tiny thunderstorm in CA which had a bit of lightning provoked a bit of a chuckle. The report was accompanied with statistics about how rarely lightning injured people and there was no real cause for concern.
dev_tty01··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
They said it 'suddenly decelerated.' That is NOT what you are supposed to do when a car is in the breakdown lane.
dev_tty01··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
It is not about charger coverage. When I have a 7:00 flight after an all day meeting I don't want to or can't budget the time required to fully charge an EV on my way to the airport. It's all about time.
dev_tty01··on How Hertz’s bet on Teslas went sideways
2 hours is still a lot longer than 5 minutes. Rapid turnover is important for these folks. I've seen rental companies run out of cars numerous times. Two hours is tough. Plus, how about when dozens of cars have been turned in and are waiting on a charge? If anything, they are most likely to levy a higher fee for returning uncharged because of their lost time.
dev_tty01··on America's Great Poet of Darkness: A Reconsideration of Robert Frost at 150
Hmm. I think that can be read different ways. He had a dark foreboding for the day and the crow encounter only saved a part of the day. Rather than optimistic, it could be perceived as still able recognize a small bit of light through his darkness. That's what great about art. The perception and situation of the viewer shapes the experience.
dev_tty01··on [dead]
The morning after Gore/Lieberman lost the 2000 election, Joe went to a local diner for breakfast. There was a huge line of supporters there to show their appreciation and offer support after the loss. This was on CSPAN and I became mesmerized watching him work the line. With no one whispering in his ear, he talked to family after family after family and clearly knew them all. Any sense of sympathy for his loss was quickly flipped to concern and interest for the person in front of him. He would ask about an ailing mother, a daughter in her first year of college, a son starting a new job, etc... He knew all the names and important milestones that were happening in their lives. It just went on and on. One can argue about policies or whatever, but this was a senator who was in touch with his constituents and had incredible recall and empathy. I've still never seen anything like it. RIP.
dev_tty01··on Canva has acquired Affinity in an effort to compete with Adobe
You are assuming the parent poster actually attempted to go through support and work through the issue. I don't see indication of that. If anything, this thread indicates to me that many people form an opinion of a product and never seek support or never seek to revisit the issue and see if it has been fixed.
dev_tty01··on Paul Alexander, ‘the man in the iron lung’, has died
I imagine that many people's attitude about being careful to avoid covid would be much different if they had a daughter who was highly vulnerable.
dev_tty01··on Paul Alexander, ‘the man in the iron lung’, has died
Depends on the test. The right test can tell the difference between the set of vaccine antibodies and the set from an actual infection. Vaccine only creates antibodies that target the spike protein structure. I participated in a study and got updates every six months.
dev_tty01··on M3 MacBook Air Peak CPU Temperature Can Reach 114 Degrees Celcius, 33% Slower
Right, so don’t buy an Air if this is a regular part of your workload. You paid less for an air and you are getting less performance under heavy extended load. Sounds about right.
dev_tty01··on Microsoft is ending support for the Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA)
Does Linux allow you to run your s390x binary on your ARM system? No.

As others have pointed out macOS allowed migration including existing binaries. They have done 3 of these migrations. 68k to PowerPC, PowerPC to x86, and x86 to ARM. Each time, users were allowed to bring along existing binaries and keep using them and each time the binaries from the previous system generally ran as fast or faster on the new system. As far as I am aware, Linux has never done anything like this.

dev_tty01··on GlobalFoundries wins $3.1B in CHIPS Act subsidies for NY, Vermont
That is just what they say to get support from constituents who don't understand international power struggles and the strategic importance of chip production capabilities. dev_tty01··on I Ended Up with Just 0.15% of My Own Startup
How many investors will do a deal with a founder who wants an anti-dilution clause? That would have to be a very special founder. An alternative is a deal that values all the hours of sweat equity. In that situation, the founder could have "invested" the hours/dollars they had banked, assuming they are getting paid below rate. That keeps everyone aligned to the same goals.

dev_tty01··on Built-in workaround for applications hiding under the MacBook Pro notch
Just use something like RDM to set the screen size to the choice that is a few pixels shorter. The system will take those pixels off the top and the notch will disappear. The top of the active pixel area will be a bit lower.

I suspect those settings are available in the controller because some Apple engineers also hate the notch.
