dev_throw··on Van life (cancer edition) finale
I think the pendulum might be swinging the other way - me and a lot of other folks in my stage 4 support group got given a very grim diagnosis and subsequent prognoses from our oncologists even though the 5 year survival statistics are outdated.

It was quite depressing in the beginning but after connecting with some people who have survived years past their onc's expiry date, I feel hopeful.

dev_throw··on Van life (cancer edition) finale
I recently heard about this in my stage 4 support group. No doctor will go on record that they do it however. God forbid there be dignity in choosing when to shuffle off the mortal coil.
dev_throw··on Van life (cancer edition) finale
Is that supposed to be Switzerland? I heard about it being an option there. Also, there is MAiD (Medical Assistance in Dying) in Canada.
dev_throw··on Popular Tibetan singer Tsewang Norbu dies of self-immolation protest
Reminds me of the Neruda quote: "You can crush the flowers, but you can't stop spring from coming."

dev_throw··on Facebook staff now to be known as “Metamates”
Sounds like a portmanteau of meta and inmates.
dev_throw··on Please make a dumb car
If you have a Roku TV, I would urge you to set up a pi hole to see how many queries it sends out. Mine blocks upwards of 10 per minute.
dev_throw··on Why might you run your own DNS server?
Agreed, I managed to achieve this by port forwarding port 53 in my router settings. This allows hackers to enlist you in their DNS amplification attacks so please never do this.
dev_throw··on New cancer therapy holds potential to switch off major cancer types
Yep, standard of care is used in control groups. Also, there are trials in which people are moved from the control arm to the experimental treatment upon increase in tumor size, which allows participants to get a chance to actually trial the drug.
dev_throw··on Ask HN: Coping with cancer in the family
Always encourage her to seek second or third opinions and to join support groups if she can. All cancers are not the same, and staging can determine prognosis, but nothing is set in stone. Ensure that she is active, as that seems to help reduce harshness of chemo to some extent anecdotally.

Let your employer know if they are empathetic, take the FMLA leave to set things up for her. Little things go a long way, like being with her during chemo sessions, cooking food that she likes and is palatable, being on hand to help her with nausea and other side effects, or even arranging distractions like a movie or finding her books to read.

dev_throw··on Atlassian fired me while I was taking care of my wife who is fighting cancer
Can a company in CA terminate employment for an employee on long term disability like stage 4 cancer after a certain period of time?
dev_throw··on Coinbase from YC to DPO
Coinbase customer service has always been tragic. I remember my BTC being locked up until I could "verify" my identity by submitting a photo of my passport, but their site kept glitching out and zero response from customer service. This went on for months.

Pulled all my coins out and will never use this scummy product again.

dev_throw··on The bizarre beasts living in Romania's poison cave (2015)
I wonder if mammals might be lurking deeper, especially ones descended from apes, would be very interesting to see how evolution would have shaped them.
dev_throw··on Uber sells self-driving unit in deal that will push Aurora’s valuation to $10B
[https://medium.com/unikie/self-driving-cars-2020-and-beyond-...] helped me understand the major players in self driving vehicles and what they're upto.

Tesla does not use Lidar as a cost savings measure, and only uses camera output to determine how the car drives. It is unknown if this is enough to account for enough permutations of traffic, but they're calling it full self driving while using car owners as paying (!) beta testers.

AFAIK, no one is close to releasing an autonomous vehicle that can drive on par or better than an average human driver, but that several have a path to getting there.

I believe many companies can thrive until M&A whittles down that list. I don't think this is a first mover takes all kinda deal because safety will have to be proven over a long time allowing other entrants to prove their worth.

dev_throw··on Ethereum 2.0 launches
This is to achieve consensus - the N nodes running the smart contract will ideally replace the central authorities that we implicitly trust.

This enables trustless transactions, which gets rid of a lot of business red tape and unlocks productivity.

dev_throw··on 76% of American CEOs say they may shrink office space
Yep. This happened in Calgary back in 2013-16 when oil fell off a cliff and office vacancies skyrocketed. A lot of prime downtown office spaces became either coworking spaces or refurbished into luxury apartments.
dev_throw··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (October 2020)
"No Vacations" - is that a Freudian slip? :) What is the average number of weeks an employee takes? I think that would be a good metric to mention generally.
dev_throw··on Dating is better than ever with social distancing
Some of the jokes were kinda cringy to me, but the reality is that dating hasn't changed too much on the whole, especially for first/second dates, just gotten cheaper due to restaurants/bars being off the menu.

On the bright side, the ability to vet people thru video calls reduces time wasted being stood up/ flaked on. Worst case, I am already at home with more free time on my hands. However, a big part of dating (at least for me) is the chemistry and body language, which is still best experienced in real life without masks. Its a pretty big commitment especially if either of us are living with other folks that we could possibly infect, so I take greater care before getting intimate with them.

dev_throw··on Release of methane gas from the seafloor in the Southern Hemisphere
We already have a known source of methane emissions that is ever increasing: cattle. Cows and swine account for several metric tons of emissions every year, factory farming accounting for most of it. Reducing this is in most people's control.
dev_throw··on She’s Got Game
Sorry to hear about your situation, and thanks for taking my question in good faith.

I see, basically a stay at home wife/mother is not adequately compensated for her time spent at home maintaining it and taking care of the children.

In the west, this is still a choice though, right? These days I don't think anyone can "bank" on their spouse staying at home while they work. In those years, you had the choice of going to work. For better or worse (I personally think children need at least one parent in early development years), you stayed at home and took care of them.

dev_throw··on She’s Got Game
"...and divorce tends to hurt women financially much more than it does men"

Everything I read about this, including anecdotal evidence points to the opposite, where men are routinely taken to the cleaners by the family court. Could you point to some resources that suggest otherwise? I'm trying to see the full picture here.

dev_throw··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
My educational background is a Canadian Bachelor's in an unrelated engineering branch (chemical). I took a few CS courses, got some experience, and have been working in the US for the past 5 years as a software engineer on TN at multiple places. I'm now getting RFE pushback on my latest renewal (same job - backend engineer) that I do not fit the software engineer designation, so our team is seeing what they can do.

I thought there would be major accounting/tax headache for my company to have employees in Canada, although it wouldn't be an immigration issue for me. If it was as easy as flipping a switch, I'd make the move. I also have another US job offer that is going through the same issue (RFE), so I'm sensing a pattern here.

dev_throw··on I’m Peter Roberts, immigration attorney who does work for YC and startups. AMA
Canadian citizen here, working at a late stage startup. I could not fly out to renew my visa due to the pandemic, so we went through USCIS. My visa appeal has gone into an RFE, and there is a chance it could get denied. I have a couple more months left.

Do American companies have to do anything special immigration-wise for an employee to work from Canada (either temporarily or permanent)? Or is it just a matter of me moving back to Canada and invoicing the company as a sole proprietor (contractor)? Is that a simple solution I could pitch my company?

dev_throw··on The Importance of India
Sorry, but this is an irresponsible conclusion. Today's "untouchables" are largely due to socioeconomic class differences rather than systemic caste oppression, which has been outlawed for a while.

The same inequality is growing quickly in the USA when you consider the percentage of wealth the 1% has.

dev_throw··on Show HN: Benefits comparison across tech companies
This is based on the presumption that quality talent joins FAANG. From what I've seen so far, it's mostly people that can leetcode their socks off that make it into FAANG.

Startups get people interested in the domain knowledge and everyone else that couldn't make it into FAANG. I agree that it is a bad financial move to join a startup if you could join FAANG instead.

dev_throw··on How to burn the most money with a single click in Azure
You can use auto scaling groups with a load balancer to terminate instances when not in use and spin them up as required.
dev_throw··on Explorabl.es
The notion that only serious work can educate someone is something I hope future educators can dispel and build engaging platforms (edutainment).

I learned about game theory, communication, teamwork, strategy and business from gaming and sports. These topics would have been quite dry to learn in a sterile educational setting. In the same vein, I hope we move to a more experiment/physical based learning of science and technology over rote learning, since a lot of learners hugely benefit from that.

I commend you on what you're working towards!

dev_throw··on Google Buys Fitbit for $2.1B
Unfortunately Google is known for its terrible customer support and sunsetting services early. It could go either way.
dev_throw··on Snapchat Employees Abused Data Access to Spy on Users
Agreed, I think I made the leap to decentralization primarily for resilience. Tox looks great, I'm gonna try it out, thanks!
dev_throw··on Snapchat Employees Abused Data Access to Spy on Users
Fair point. This problem could be alleviated by @InflatableDodo's comment of using other nodes (devices) on the network to cache the video, so even if the sender went offline, another node could make the connection with the recipient when they are both online. Sort of like seeding a torrent, except in this case, the video gets wiped upon confirmed receipt.

Of course, this is more viable if this gains a large network.

dev_throw··on Snapchat Employees Abused Data Access to Spy on Users
Well, these days a lot of phones are part of P2P networks such as BitTorrent, so that's not a blocker.
