dev_daftly··on FTC is investigating OpenAI, Anthropic and other AI companies over product risks
This is an ignorant take. Everybody involved in the administration has pretty much been on the same page that the new regulations openai/anthropic want aren't necessary because they are already liable for what their ai does.

dev_daftly··on Universal health coverage could save $1T and 114k lives a year: study
They have also started recommending patients just kill themselves too
dev_daftly··on Muse Glimmer: 30B-parameter model optimized for always-on local agent workflows
You think the company buying up all the books, cutting off the bindings, and feeding them through a scanner isn't also distilling other models?
dev_daftly··on Credit Card Points Are a Transfer from the Broke to the Comfortable
The author couldn't even get through the first two sentences without being wrong. Credit card rewards are not funded by interest and this idea that credit card companies don't want you paying off your bill every month is retarded. The card issuer gets the majority of the interchange fee and makes a profit on every swipe even after accounting for rewards.
dev_daftly··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
It's not executing untrusted code, it's calling git when you have a malicious version of git on your system
dev_daftly··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
git clone a repo, cd into the directory, git checkout ..., and you're compromised
dev_daftly··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
In this case, if you just run a git command yourself it executes the file as well.
dev_daftly··on Cursor 0day: When Full Disclosure Becomes the Only Protection Left
You can leave out cursor and it would do the same thing.
dev_daftly··on Elastic lays off 7% of employees
Tech companies use RSUs to game the accounting system and then have to do stock buybacks to keep the outstanding shares in line.
dev_daftly··on US Administration announces 34% tariffs on China, 20% on EU
What analysis has shown that people are not doing this? All I have seen is that there aren't a significant number of convictions, but that doesn't really hold wait if you aren't actually trying to catch/prevent people from doing it. If it never happened, there wouldn't be a standard well known practice of casting a provisional ballot if you have already "voted".
dev_daftly··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
That was a day or two ago.
dev_daftly··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
He canceled elections and is serving past his term. He clearly doesn't have to answer to the people of Ukraine anymore.
dev_daftly··on Zelensky leaves White House after angry meeting
If Putin is removed from power, it won't be with somebody more friendly to the west.
dev_daftly··on Apple says it will add 20k jobs, spend $500B, produce AI servers in US
The crazy thing is, it's not that long ago that Irish and Italian immigrants were not discriminated against. They didn't even consider Italian immigrants to be white.
dev_daftly··on Nokia's internal presentation after iPhone was launched (2007) [pdf]
Ballmer, the person who pushed for and created the entire Microsoft Enterprise focus, is not an idea guy that understood what made Microsoft successful? This idea that Ballmer was some goof when he was actually considered a co-founder by Bill Gates which is why he received like 17% of the company when he joined.

Also, they put plenty of effort into getting developers to onboard windows phone. They even created multiple platforms that allowed devs to create a single app that worked across all windows devices(pc, phone, xbox) but developers decided, with some very influential devs being extremely vocal, that is was some sort of power grab to force devs to only deliver their software through the windows store.

dev_daftly··on Nokia's internal presentation after iPhone was launched (2007) [pdf]
I think it was actually a good idea. I think they correctly predicted the Android market and saw Windows Phone was a good way to differentiate their phones from everybody else. If you look at the history of Android manufacturers, it was a long slog of brands trading off popularity and hardly making any profit until Samsung eventually became the only mainstream player.
dev_daftly··on Docker Desktop Broken on Mac OS Update for over a Week
They decided they want to actually get paid for their work and changed their pricing structure so large companies need to pay for their software and apparently that's terrible and everybody started being very vocal about alternatives despite still being able to use it for free.
dev_daftly··on macOS Sequoia Preview
I would love it if I could have different natural scrolling settings for mouse and trackpad, but that's apparently too much to ask for despite it being supported by every other os.
dev_daftly··on WWDC 2024 [video]
So far, everything should have just been a blog post
dev_daftly··on Capital One to buy Discover Financial in $35B stock deal
How would that change after this merger?
dev_daftly··on Apple announces that RCS support is coming to iPhone next year
We wouldn't because the issue always was iphone users never willing to use an app outside of imessage. What good is a messaging platform if more than 1/2 your network won't use it?
dev_daftly··on The Future of How We Work Together at Roblox
Because it would be leaked anyways
dev_daftly··on Brave is a fork, not a Chromium reskin
User agent strings are all fake and should just be removed. Browsers modify them to game what servers send them, Microsoft had a great blog post about it when they released edge showing the difference in what it received based on user agent string changes.
dev_daftly··on Toyota has been developing a solid-state battery for EVs with a range of 745mi
They have an electrified version of pretty much every car they sell.
dev_daftly··on Toyota has been developing a solid-state battery for EVs with a range of 745mi
Except we do know why because they have written blog posts about it. They would rather make 100 hybrids than 10 BEV's. They think it's better environmentally and they haven't said this part, but probably a lot more profitable as well.
dev_daftly··on FreeWilly 1 and 2, two new open-access LLMs
Free Willy 1 is a classic and holds up, Free Willy 2 doesn't
dev_daftly··on Why they're smearing Lina Khan
Politics has broken him
dev_daftly··on SUSE is forking RHEL
This gets stated a lot, but I don't think it's actually true and RH has stated they don't see an actual benefit from this. Plus, they already have that ecosystem that isn't just free-version of RHEL with CentOS Stream and Fedora.
dev_daftly··on SUSE is forking RHEL
Yea, we are going to destroy RHEL by doing what they want us to. RH wants more people using and building distros off of centos stream instead of using RHEL clones. I don't think they see this as a negative, especially since it devalues suse in the process because they are basically admitting RHEL is more desirable.
dev_daftly··on Charter schools, social norming and zero-sum games (2010)
That's because of "zero-tolerance" policies, which never made any sense.
