devNoise··on Solving Wordle using information theory
A couple years ago, I wrote some js to sort a 5 letter word file. The value for a word was based on letter frequency in each letter location. Then I took the words that didn't have repeating letters. The I choose a word at the top that I liked and grep'd for some other words to use for the 2nd and 3rd try. In 3 tries, you have used over half the alphabet and all vowels. This usually lets me get the word by the 4th try. Here are some word sets you can start with.

- pares, moity, bundh|bunch - pares, monty, build|guild - pares, doily, bunch|munch

- pores, banty, guild|mucid - pores, canty, build|guild - pores, manty, build|guild

- bares, ponty, guild|mucid - bares, moity, punch|dunch - bares, monty, guild|child

- cares, ponty, build|guild - cares, moity, bundh|gulph - cares, monty, build|guild

devNoise··on Hoonigan Files for Bankruptcy with $1.2B in Debt
Which company? The lifestyle/youtube/clothing company or the company that acquire them and a lot of other automotive companies? Seems like they over expanded.
devNoise··on FTC and DOJ want to free McDonald's ice cream machines from DMCA repair rules
The machine it sells to McDonald franchisee are crap. They make other ice cream machines for other franchises and they don't seem to have the same repair issues.
devNoise··on “We kill people based on metadata” and other metadata things
The other question is how many terrorist did we create from drone strikes?
devNoise··on Ask HN: What to get for my brother's 50th birthday?
To follow up on the pen idea. Tactile Turn pens are popular with the EDC crowd. https://tactileturn.com/pages/shop
devNoise··on Laravel 9
Go with the "Laravel from Scratch" on v8 to learn the basics. Then follow up with the "What's new in Laravel 9". I'll be updating to v9 this spring. Laravel has been pretty stable since they changed to semver for versioning (ie v6). The framework is fairly stable. They held off the v9 release so it could have the new Symphony components. A lot of features that would have been released with v9 were added to the v8 framework. v9 may have some breaking changes, but I'd have to really dig through the release notes to find what would affect my app.

I'm more concerned with updating PHP from 7.4.x to 8.x then the framework update. Our test env had issue with one of our blade templates when running under 8.x.

devNoise··on 2.3k Patch Would Improve Linux Build Times 50~80% & Fix “Dependency Hell”
In relation to the article, it seems like Ingo Molnar did everyone a favor by doing some low level code clean up. I hope this gets tested and accepted.
devNoise··on 2.3k Patch Would Improve Linux Build Times 50~80% & Fix “Dependency Hell”
Yes, the "Massive ~2.3k Patch Series" in the article title give a better idea about this patch vs "2.3K Patch" HN title.
devNoise··on OnlyFans drops planned porn ban
I believe a lot of the sex workers expected this to happen at some point. Tumblr burned them when they got bought. So they might have some diversification, but their main focus has been OnlyFans. That was the platform that gave the best ROI.
devNoise··on AirPods Max and AirPods Pro Don't Support Apple Music Lossless, Apple Confirms
The gold really lets you hear how much over the kill can be.
devNoise··on Interactive IPA Chart
I get that IPAs and neIPAs will dominate the taps at my local breweries, but kinda disappointed I haven't seen any Maibocks on tap this spring.
devNoise··on Opinion: We’ll Have Herd Immunity by April
I agree that "fear sells". Usually there is a "them" to be afraid of. Not sure the media has figured out who we're supposed to be afraid of in this pandemic.
devNoise··on Teardown of the Apple's A1243 Keyboard
Yeah, the M7803 is great. Still have the one from my G4. A couple of years ago, I found a guy on FB market place that was clearing out an office with a bunch of those. Bought two, a black/clear and white. With those as backups, I took my original one apart to give it a good cleaning.
devNoise··on Ask HN: Anyone else burnt out due to extended lockdown and work-from-home?
If you can bank your vacation, then feel free to carry some over. Just don't burn it. As peruvian say take a staycation. Or just take a Friday or Monday off have a couple 3 day weekends to use your vacation time.

Another vacation tip is to take your vacation across weeks (Wen to Tues). That way you have short work weeks (2 or 3 days) around the vacation.

devNoise··on Iconic Star Wars Book Author Claims Disney Owes Him 4 Years of Overdue Royalties
I would say you should have held onto the DVDs. That way you can some claim to way you transcoded the media to a format you could use.
devNoise··on Car Paint Colors Have Gotten More Boring over the Years
I didn't to pay that much, but it cost me an extra $200 to get my car in red vs black (circa 2018).
devNoise··on DrawERD makes it easy to visualize your database structure
You could try SchemaSpy http://schemaspy.org/

Downsides are I need to have the Java JVM installed to use it. Also had to do some make a custom property file to make it work with postgres 12 the last time I used it.

devNoise··on DayStar Genesis MP
The problem with mac clones in the 90s was that it didn't increase mac market share. Compounding that issue was the fact that the clone makers were making models like this that were taking sales away from the higher end macs at the time.
devNoise··on Should I buy an Intel Mac today or wait to buy an Arm-based Mac?
My understanding is that docker on the mac uses some sort of vm to run the containers. Docker Toolbox use VirtualBox and Docker Desktop uses HyperKit.

devNoise··on Magic hat leaves behind a transformed craft beer industry in Vermont
Agree that 20+ taps is more likely a bar than a brewery. Though I think that a sixtel is more likely being used than a mini-keg.
devNoise··on Mark Zuckerberg faces employee blowback over ruling on Trump comments
Six flags is a chain of amusement parks. Roller coasters and thrill rides.
devNoise··on A twenty-year professor on starting college this fall: Don’t
I'm on the fence about how scholarships should factor into the total cost of college. I feel like there is a decent amount of scholarship money freshmen year that disappears after that. So that the student ends up with a lot of student loans debt to finish school. It's all well and good that freshmen at an expensive college will be cheaper than some alternate school. Though is it really going to be cheaper overall? I don't think so and this is how lots of students end up with to much student debt.

I put in Pokemon and saw Pokemondate in the list. I envision it would be a dating app for finding true love with another pokemon player.
devNoise··on Mac mini
I wouldn't say "updating them regularly". The last three updates were in 2018, 2014, and 2012. That 4 year stretch without an update had many thinking they would just discontinue the Mac Mini.
devNoise··on The Dysfunctional Trillion-Dollar U.S. Fighter-Jet Program
I think the Navy and Air Force could have shared version with a lot in common. The Marines want VTOL and I understand that feature is important to the Marines. Unfortunately, the VTOL requirements have force compromises in the design. Without VTOL, I believe the Navy and Air Force would have ended up with a platform that was more acceptable then what they are getting.
devNoise··on Ask HN: Should I keep this Job board for free or sell it as a lifetime deal?
Ignore #5 or think of it a supplemental revenue stream. Revenue from banner ads seems to be on the decline. Ab blockers and what not. My gut says that it's not a good way to fund your job board for the long haul.
devNoise··on Ask HN: Best current book to learn JavaScript?
I've been going through the challenges and projects at freeCodeCamp to shore up my JS skills. I had been using React and started to focus on the D3.js projects. Started a new project with React and now I'm being told that React.createClass is being deprecated in v16. JS the language is getting better and more powerful. The frameworks and the libraries are a moving target.
devNoise··on Modern “Hackintoshes” show that Apple should probably just build a Mac tower
As mentioned in the article for Apple to have a successful desktop, they need to make it boring. A simple tower that allows the users to upgrade a couple components like the RAM, hard drive and full-sized graphics card. I think the starting price should be around $1600 which was the entry price of the PowerMac G4 back in the day. At that price it should be on par with the 27" iMac or better since you don't have to include a retina display. I'm not sure how big the market is for desktop macs anymore, but I'd really like to buy a mac like that.
devNoise··on The F-35 still has a long way to go
From a Bloomberg article* yesterday: "The lift fan made the common fuselage bulkier than it otherwise would have been. That, in turn, increased drag and decreased fuel efficiency and range."

This quote from the article reinforces my view that the VTOL requirement does effect the other version of the F-35.
