devKnight··on Framework Laptop with Ubuntu Review
i've been running a ryzen 5 2500u laptop for the last 2 or so years. no issues at all getting things running with the various distros i've used
devKnight··on Ask HN: Switching Teams Internally?
I'd say just find a new job. At a certain point, leaving is the best option
devKnight··on Zinc Search Engine – A lightweight alternative to Elasticsearch written in Go
awesome, you should make a demo site, so that people can test it out.
devKnight··on Ask HN: How do you stay active while working from home?
what worked for me was: Eating less take out, cook at home more Going for walks No soda, only water
devKnight··on Ask HN: Do you think we, as adults, can become native in another language?
Shadowing is rather simple but highly effective. The way i did it at least, involved ripping the audio from tv shows in French. And listening to them on my phone as i would music, while trying to say the characters lines with the same tonality, pronunciation etc etc.

The objective is to try and be as close as possible to the recording. You would use the same recording/s over and over again. To try and hit all the right notes when it comes to expressions and all that. This is a sort of dry run of having fluid conversations.

Do this, everyday for an amount of time that works for you say 20 minutes or so while taking a walk, or while working. It really helps, and to me somehow connected the words i "knew" but my brain never detected when someone said it in a tv show, movie, podcast, let alone a youtube video or something informal like that. Shadowing made things click for me not just in pronunciation but in listening.

Its weird to explain it, as you kinda have to go through it. Its a minimal task with lots of benefits.

devKnight··on Ask HN: Do you think we, as adults, can become native in another language?
I would recommend the book Fluent Forever for getting started with a language.

1) I think you can reach a really high level, IMO true fluency comes from being able to understand the cultural references and for a lack of a better word memes used in a languages culture

2) I used 'shadowing' to greatly improve my French accent, got lots of compliments from native French speakers on it. It helped alot

devKnight··on Ask HN: Do you think we, as adults, can become native in another language?
This can be remedied with immediate feed back loops. There was an experiment where native Japanese speakers were taught to hear the difference between the English language R and L, which native Japanese speakers interpret as a sound that is sort of like an R, but kind of in the middle of the two.

Using an immediate feedback loop, where they heard the R and had to say if it was R or not, then L etc etc. They were able to pretty quickly grasp the difference.

After being able to notice this difference, it becomes easier to be able to pronounce these sounds that aren't found in one's native language.

This has been my experience when learning French(which has many sounds not used in English)

devKnight··on Ask HN: How to know if you should stop doing startups?
if you are US based, and know the MERN stack, email me(profile). A startup i work with is searching for a CTO, its an early stage. in case you are interested
devKnight··on Ask HN: How to know if you should stop doing startups?
lol, im a bit similar. I can code pretty well, but i like being able to jump around and do different things, talk to stake holders etc.

I think you might be able to easily get a job at an early stage startup, and have a pretty deep impact with how things are done.

Happy to help

devKnight··on Ask HN: How to know if you should stop doing startups?
have you considered joining an early stage startup?
devKnight··on Ask HN: Any good list of Black Friday offers of softwares for devs?
DataCamp is on sale for 99 for the year
devKnight··on Ask HN: What Niche Language to Learn?
can you effectively learn COBOL without having access to mainframes/the hardware it usually runs on? I know that there are COBOL envs that can run on all major operating systems for practice. But has anyone been able to learn it at home per say and then transitioned to working on production COBOL codebases?
devKnight··on Ask HN: Hiring a remote engineering team abroad?
well, it doesn't work out that way all the time. I'm a near shore dev, and I've been on teams where someone doesn't speak English and i'd do the interpretation live or help explain a ticket. Though these people usually can at least read and write in English.

You could have a small team where you lead things, interface exclusively with clients and the team. Though you will be the bottle neck as to how much business can be done. You should probably search to have some of your team members know English.

I would stress that if they can at least read and write, you can make it work. Interestingly there are lots of people who can do that but not speak very well.

devKnight··on Ask HN: Hiring a remote engineering team abroad?
Yes, People use these services. You can check out Goldmediatech, Bairesdev, Wildom, among many others who do this at a large scale in Latin America. Its doable
devKnight··on Tell HN: /asknew Has Been Created
awesome, feature!
devKnight··on Ask HN: What do you do with old/damaged/imperfect MacBooks?
you could ship them to Louis Rossman, so that he can use them for spare parts for other macbooks. Help them get a new lease on life. Maybe ask him to cover the cost of shipping
devKnight··on Ask HN: Who's not sucky to work for?
I had a similar experience at a previous job, they hired tons of random developers and started paying per story point. Quit shorty after.

Also work remotely for companies in the states, nearshore.

devKnight··on DARPA’s Hypersonic Air-Breathing Weapon Concept(HAWC) Achieves Successful Flight
a rick roll would have been better. currently routes to a Shelby Lynn playlist on youtube
devKnight··on Ask HN: Why is there no Django/Rails equivalent in JavaScript world?
Adonis.js is a sort of Laravel clone for the node eco-system. Its been around for years, but i don't see it used very much
devKnight··on Ask HN: How do you memorize things you read?
learn how to use memory palaces, its how i passed all of my non-math or non-programming classes in college.

its absolutely amazing for memorizing lists of things that seem random, or really any subject you understand but forget the specifics for. you can memorize bullet points, lists, etc.

for some background you can read Moonwalking with Einstein, and Memory, Memory, Memory

devKnight··on Ask HN: Cross-Border Remote Jobs
i would recommend that you put your info into the monthly hackernews posts Freelancer and who wants to be hired.

I live outside the states, but got contacted for some freelancing opportunities.

The way i see it there is an absolutely large amount of work that you can do outside of the US/EU for companies based there. They just probably aren't FAANGs or their equivalents. Lots of small and medium shops hire too.

I currently work for a small company in the states, but live in latam

devKnight··on Ask HN: Is a 2019 guide for AWS Certified Developer guidebook still up-to-date?
Look into courses by cantrill. Bought the Solutions Architect Associate course, it only cost 40 usd and its updated on the regular. His AWS Developer course is also pretty new, same price
devKnight··on Slack Is Down Again
Instagram(and maybe some other FB services) seem to be having issues again today. According to the verge
devKnight··on Doesn’t Anyone in the U.S. Government Like the U.S.?

devKnight··on Ask HN: How do I build my own personal alternative to FB's Messenger app?
I've kind of been thinking of having a backup system for our dev team to be able to communicate if something like this hits slack et al. A self hosted instance of mastodon or something might do the trick. Or maybe establishing some kind of emergency protocol for when things like this happens. Context: Small team, all remote.
devKnight··on If China takes over Taiwan, what happens to silicon chips?
wonder if there's a plan to evac everyone who has crucial know-how abroad, a la Operation Paperclip and its soviet counterpart. If they can move all of the machinery and people out in time( This is taking into account, that the worst has come to happen ). They could setup shop elsewhere in probably under a year.
