devKnight··on Ask HN: Would you pay for a service that reduces your cloud costs?
i'm pretty sure something like that exists, i'm not saying don't build it, but there does seem to be a market for it
devKnight··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
I'm also curious about how to get these kinds of contracts
devKnight··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
just get out, while you still can
devKnight··on Ask HN: Who Wants to Be Fired? (June 2022)
I think the hesitation is that your skills might atrophy as well as your ability to work in non-chill environments, in case it becomes necessary to move on in the future. Company could go under, get acquired etc etc
devKnight··on Barnes and Noble’s Nook GlowLight 4e is a cheaper option to the Kindle lineup
I have a kindle paperwhite, i get around the ads by not connecting it to the internet, and i can sideload books by dragging and dropping or using Calibre. But nice offering by B&N
devKnight··on Tell HN: Job interview canceled due to looming recession
There are still people hiring, there's always work out there. I'd put up a post in the "freelancer" and "who wants to be hired" posts next week here on hackernews. Maybe you can get some bites that way, I've gotten work through that in the past.
devKnight··on Ask HN: Solo founders, what’s “stuff breaks while you're unavailable” strategy?
Not a solo founder, but this is a huge part of it. Do not deploy changes to code or architecture unless you CAN be on call to fix what breaks.
devKnight··on SpaceX paid $250,000 to cover up Elon Musk sexual harassment of flight attendant
the entire media doesn't like him, do you think not being able to post on twitter is going to prevent them from disseminating any potentially bad info on Musk?

Will it stop CNBC, CNN etc etc from doing their reporting?

devKnight··on SpaceX paid $250,000 to cover up Elon Musk sexual harassment of flight attendant
yeah, because trying to buy out a billion dollar company in a take over that will take months to complete is a great way of getting ahead of something like this. makes total sense
devKnight··on Which dev platforms can I join so I don’t get stuck with sh**y cheap clients?
i haven't used any platforms, i've found jobs through ads on social media and stuff. One agency/recruiting firm i can recommend is donestreet[0], did their interview process, they were able to get me in front of companies very very quickly, who were all basically ready to hire me. I found another opportunity and went with them. But I would contact donestreet if i ever needed to look for another job

devKnight··on Ask HN: Non-US Person Incorporating in the US
one benefit for people from abroad of creating their corp in the US, is that services are available. ie: you can use stripe or other payment processors in a lot of countries.

It would be cheaper to setup a US corp, stripe, bank account etc. And then just send the profits home through swift. With all of the fees factored in, sometimes it can be more expensive to do payment processing locally, because of crap rates from local payment processors.

That's just one example, I'm sure there are others

devKnight··on Which dev platforms can I join so I don’t get stuck with sh**y cheap clients?
I've found work through hackernews, post in Junes "freelancer, looking for freelancer" post. Follow the same format as everyone else, list the tech you know, what sort of responsibilities you can take on. You'll get hits. I'm based in latam as well.

If you want a full time job, check out he "Who wants to be hired" and "Who's hiring"

devKnight··on Ask HN: Imigrating to Canada
its worth a shot, to see what kind of companies they partner with, maybe you can find a good one.
devKnight··on Ask HN: Imigrating to Canada
I've seen this company on linkedin Vanhack[0] they are a recruiting firm that connects devs with companies in Canada. Might be a good place to start. This is for the purpose of relocating to Canada of course

devKnight··on Ask HN: Is anyone else glad the crypto market is crashing?
NFTs are basically tulip mania and beanie babies all over again.

I've been wondering when it would crash, didn't expect it to happen this quickly. NFTs i mean.

devKnight··on Why isn't HN plagued with bots like some other websites?
There are bots that scrap for emails on the monthly who's hiring etc posts. Made the mistake once of posting my email in the original formatting, got some funny scam emails. So they are still around
devKnight··on Ask HN: How many people actually use Vim?
I use neovim on servers, and locally if I'm just editing a file. For work i use vs codium with the vim keybindings enabled. People do use it, and once you get used to it, going back to the normal way of doing things seems really slow and annoying
devKnight··on Ask HN: Good ways to weed out people who fixate on grinding LeetCode?
Asking open ended questions, is where you can really gauge people. ie: What was the toughest coding problem you had to deal with at your last/current job? Tell me about the last time you needed to ask for help with a coding issue, where you had exhausted all options on your end?

etc etc

Edit: I help with hiring at the company i work at, and i like using open ended questions

devKnight··on Ask HN: How do you make money in your free time?
In my case part time with a startup, MERN development(Have full time job as well). If you have any useful skills or services you can provide you can post about it in the monthly Freelancer, and Who wants to be hired posts. The next one will be at the beginning of April. That's how i got this gig
devKnight··on Ask HN: Is an AWS certification worth it for learning the basics of dev ops?
For auth, cognito is what you'll have to look at unless you want to build something out yourself. It has a per user cost

Avoid Dynamo unless you understand it. It will be like firebase but 10x worse, if you get it wrong, there are 2 great aws conference talks on youtube about it, and a great book out there. Its really its own subject, great when you use it right, and absolute nightmare any other way.

Object storage with s3 is pretty simple, turning on cloudfront for cdn is also easy.

I have AWS experience, if you would like to do a consultation to talk it over, my email is in my profile. I don't really have the bandwidth to take on another project right now, but can provide some advice.

devKnight··on Ask HN: Is an AWS certification worth it for learning the basics of dev ops?
I would recommend Cantrills aws courses[0]. the Solutions Architect course is what you're after. Its only 40 bucks and worth more then that. Completely jam packed with information. It walks you through the scenario of updating a non-profit orgs infra from an in house one to an aws cloud version.

The cert might be a good thing to aim for, but if you could specify what exactly you want/need to learn how to do. we could probably give more detailed information

devKnight··on Ask HN: Why does the Ruble still hold 50% of its value?
can be, but that won't stop people from doing it. Because this is all brought on by sanctions, if the sanctions can be lifted and then Russia can continue to sell their commodities, fertilizer etc, it could hypothetically bounce back enough to make you a profit. Usually investors have a certain amount of money they throw at super risky trades, that might fail, so it in the end won't matter much to them if it goes nowhere.
devKnight··on Ask HN: Why does the Ruble still hold 50% of its value?
could also be people buying it to speculate. ie: buy it now that its lost value, wait till the sanctions are lifted, these people could be expecting it to be over soon. when the value goes up, exchange back for your currency of choice ie: dollars, euros, etc etc
devKnight··on Russian Strategic Culture
i haven't gotten around to watching it yet, but will soon. Having to read subs makes sure you actually pay attention lol
devKnight··on Russian Strategic Culture
thanks for sharing this!
devKnight··on Ask HN: Has anyone been hired from the “Who wants to be hired” threads?
I have, got 2 leads from it that were ready to hire me.

I mostly just posted in the same format as everyone else. And posted my rate.

devKnight··on Ask HN: Is most advice only helpful for a while until too many people follow it?
I think part of it too, is that over time the advice gets watered down, and this watered down version is then taught to further "generations".

Going back to the origin and then extrapolating to current conditions can probably yield great results

devKnight··on Ask HN: Hiring managers, which type of engineer is hardest to find nowadays?
In my so far short career this has been my experience as well. Though communication is something that we really don't think about very often.
devKnight··on Ask HN: Why don't browsers pre-include popular JavaScript libraries?
this is actually an interesting idea
devKnight··on Ask HN: How do you approach salary negotiation going from a FAANG to a startup?
you could part time for a startup, that's what i do.

My day job is at a consulting type of firm, and in the evenings i work for a small startup part time. Like Onion2k mentioned its a lot of simple stuff, crud work, deployments, implementing apis etc. Not exactly super exciting, but still a learning experience cause you get to wear a lot of hats and do things across the stack
