devKnight··on Ask HN: Does Duolingo Work?
I would recommend the Assimil language courses, very good if you consistently do it every day, they're also not too expensive. Like 75 bucks last i checked, and that'll keep you busy for 90+ days.

Assimil says it can get you to a b1/b2-ish level, which i think is about where it takes you. I did their German course a long time ago, and was able to read paragraphs and understand them just fine by the end of it(didn't keep up with German, so that skill has atrophied.

After finishing Assimil, i would watch a tv show you've already watched but now in french. Ie: go to Netflix or Prime(which in my experience have the most language options) and watch Friends, 24, The Blacklist, Seinfeld etc etc whatever you can think of, in French, it'll help a lot, and make acquiring vocab easier. Native language content can sometimes be a bit harder to grasp because of cultural events/history you may not be familiar with yet.

But French language content I have enjoyed in the past are the podcasts "Podcast Marketing Digital"(also a youtube channel), deux mille ans d'histoire(history podcast)

devKnight··on Ask HN: What are the benefits of using Tailwind if you know CSS/SASS well?
If you are extremely disciplined when it comes to your custom css, sure its better.

But like any framework or library, tailwind lets other people jump in quickly and be productive because its a standard. Though i may be biased because i love using tailwind

devKnight··on Ask HN: Successful one-person online businesses?
The old thread is an interesting read.

I hope to one day have a one person saas company of some kind.

devKnight··on Ask HN: What are your most regretted tech purchases?
Sony xm4's, they are great headphones! but i never use the noise cancelling feature, because the absence of noise for some reason gives a sensation of pressure and is very discomforting. Don't use the transparency mode either, but its really useful imo.

It's hot most of the year where i live, and it turns into a sauna around your ears, didn't think of that when i dropped a couple hundred bucks on it.

Also my unit sometimes just momentarily doesn't have sound. For like a split fraction of a second there's no sound, and then it continues like nothing. Seems other people have this issue, i've been able to solve it for short periods of time by toggling the connection quality switch in the sony app.

I would recommend the sony WI-C100's, not very expensive, bluetooth, and battery life of 24 hours, plus since its just wireless buds connect together, no sauna during the warm months.

Still like using the XM4's the sound quality is amazing.

devKnight··on Ask HN: Junior dev in charge of rewriting 500k line PHP app. Looking for advice
From my experience of doing a full migration of a not too large frontend app, its gonna take way longer than anyone expects. And there are going to be higher ups that are going to be upset about it, because whoever sold them on the idea of a full rewrite, said it would take x but its taking 2.5x or how ever long it takes.

devKnight··on Ask HN: Recruiters, how many hours after a job posting is too late to apply?
Sounds like you might need to redo your resume. When i started emphasizing my cloud experience, it got me way more responses(from recruiters on linkedin)

Also word on the street is that a lot of recruiters are using LLMs to scan resumes. So including lots of key words in there, especially ones that show up in the actual job ad might be necessary to get beyond that filter

devKnight··on Ask HN: Best offline-only eBook reader?
I use kindle. Have wifi turned off, and just load the books over usb using calibre. When you buy the kindle books off of amazon, you can download them to your computer to then put them on the device, theres some DRM in there so only your devices will be able to read them.

You still need to register the kindle with your account, but after that, it can be an offline device

devKnight··on Ask HN: What skills do you think will be most in-demand in 10 years?
I've been thinking about this for a while. I mostly do js/ts[full stack]. But having C# or Java under my belt would probably be a good idea, those two aren't going away anytime soon. Plus docker and k8s.

Like you said, the classics aren't going anywhere

devKnight··on Ask HN: Best Linux Distro for Development
I use pop os do web development, works great. Just really ram hungry, so make sure you have a lot of that, which i'm guessing you will anyway given that you'll be doing mobile development(I assume that its a ram heavy process)

devKnight··on Ask HN: Did anybody get a job from "Who is hiring"?
I did, don't remember if it was from the "Who wants to be hired" thread, or the "Freelancer" thread.
devKnight··on Ask HN: What happened to who's hiring post?
Ah ok, didn't know about that part. Thanks for clearing that up!
devKnight··on Ask HN: Would love a physical job, any ideas?
Maybe take up a team sport, or martial art. Or do some physical labor part time, to see if you actually want to do it full time, or if this is just an itch you can scratch on the weekends

Have about 5 years of experience working at US based startups and small companies. Mainly looking for frontend work, but can do full stack as well.

Would be happy to do some free consulting calls with any startup founders just getting started wanted to talk about what to look for when hiring or what their infra might look like when getting started, or if looking to hire in latam(have experience building remote teams, looking for devs, interviewing, and hiring etc) I can provide assistance with that.

devKnight··on My first $10k internet dollars
Congrats, this is an awesome milestone!
devKnight··on Ask HN: Retired engineers, are you being asked to return to work?
if you need some frontend(React, Vue) work done, i'm in that mid range. Email in my bio.
devKnight··on Programmers: How do you find jobs without the help of recruiters?
Below are some great places to look for roles

Angel list remoteok linkedin hackernews: monthly who's hiring post your network

devKnight··on Ask HN: Is open source subject to sanctions?
Not a direct answer to your question, but the solution would be to fork it, I guess? If that did become an issue
