detectivestory··on Show HN: Serie – A rich Git commit graph in your terminal
I really like these kind of tools, and its great to see new ones being made. I will be sure to give this a try. I've never enjoyed using lazygit personally but I do use gitin daily and I find it very useful. Unfortunately the project is no longer active: https://github.com/isacikgoz/gitin
detectivestory··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
not the change mentioned in the news link. I was referring to what people are discussing over on the reddit play store sub. Google are terminating dev accounts without giving any reasons or warnings. I'm sure most, if not all terminations have have some element of justification but ultimately it means that Google seem pretty happy to terminate any dev account without letting the developer know why. And to make things worse, that developer is forever banned from ever publishing any content on the playstore for life. They cannot make a new account. Their career in android app development can be destroyed in an instant. Most terminations seem to be handled by bots... and to rub salt in the wound, Google only responds to appeals... using more bots. That is according to what the community has been saying at least. I'm sure they know what they are doing and one thing we all know is that Google actually IS big enough not to fail. But it does seem like the right thing to at least make new developers more aware of the risks. And it is obviously a very stressful time for anyone who is actually making a living off an android app.
detectivestory··on Android's sideloading limits are its most anti-consumer move
From a quick glance at /r/GooglePlayDeveloper/ it looks like Google is just as interested in killing playstore apps! It seems that they only want to support the existing larger apps now. I think they are giving a clear message to developers that its not really worth developing for that platform anymore. I think we will all agree that the playstore needed a purge but they seem to be making it impossible for any new solo devs at this point.
detectivestory··on Next.js is infuriating
I did find it quite funny that he makes this claim, but then writes an entire blog piece about how nextjs is no good because of one particular thing it doesn't do to his liking!
detectivestory··on Ask HN: What are you working on? (May 2025)
A site for helping smaller musicians on youtube to get their first listeners: https://nwtb.eu
detectivestory··on Show HN: nwtb - a site for discovering new music on YouTube
Getting your first few views on youtube can be pretty tough at the best of times. That's why I created this site for highlighting new music (mainly acoustic covers and originals) posted each day. Users can rate songs they like, and there is a weekly chart section to highlight the favourites. There are still a lot of features to add, but it does the basics for now. thanks for reading. the site is: https://nwtb.eu/?views=10&sort=date
detectivestory··on I Built My Own Audio Player
Would be amazing if you could connect this to pcloud. Their default player is no fun to use
detectivestory··on Paul McCartney, Elton John and other creatives demand AI comes clean on scraping
I'm pretty sure soundcloud has already done this. I don't believe they gave an option to opt-out though.
detectivestory··on Paul McCartney, Elton John and other creatives demand AI comes clean on scraping
Yes, they should have ran with "More than 400 of the UK's leading media and arts professionals" as the headline. But realistically, they are probably trying to appeal to a certain reader who won't be found in the comments section of a HN article.
detectivestory··on LibreLingo – FOSS Alternative to Duolingo
I find LT great for "learning the language", but I find something like Spanish After Hours on Youtube to be far better for "learning to speak and understand the spoken language". I would recommend that everyone at least dips into something like LT every now and then, but I think something like SAH is better for daily exercises.
detectivestory··on Show HN: I made a simple web app that save money
Seems like a good idea. FYI: The signup for doesn't seem to render correctly in lightmode...
detectivestory··on Show HN: Colors That Cuddle
this is great! I did find parts of the UI a little confusing though... Should the input colour update when I change source? And after saving a project, I am not sure how I can re-open it. Maybe it's just me but I didn't immediately realise that the nodes on the left were draggable (i see now that it is mentioned lower down). Maybe add "drag dots" to those? Really nice tool though!
detectivestory··on Show HN: An AI code assistant for Vim
The available commands are:

:CodeCheck -- runs code check without any additional information.

:CodeCheckExplain -- requests detailed explanation of the issues found.

:CodeCheckAskQuestion <args> -- asks a question about specific issues, where <args> is your query.

detectivestory··on Show HN: WikiTok – TikTok Style of Wikipedia Discovery
I've enjoyed playing with WikiTok recently. The only thing I don't like is that it opens wikipedia in a separate page when you want to read more, and it disrupts my engagement flow. I'd like to see a version where the content is implemented directly into the app.
detectivestory··on Stimulation Clicker
so cool
detectivestory··on Show HN: I designed an espresso machine and coffee grinder
I don't think its really fair to call this site "poorly designed".
detectivestory··on Amazon tells employees to return to office five days a week
and the job market is likely to be flooded with even more people looking for fully remote jobs over the coming months. Should be good for some companies looking to hire remotely, but it will be tough time for job-seekers.
detectivestory··on Nomnoml
I think this would work really well with the right vim plugin.
detectivestory··on GPT-4 can't reason
I've commented below that I have tried playing some lateral thinking games with chatGPT and I have found it to be pretty poor at understanding what is going on when it has limited information/context to work with. I had played around with implementing chatGTP as a bot player on my "dark stories" app: https://detective-stories.com/ but I found that it wasn't close to even an average human player when it came to the skills needed to play either role in the game.
detectivestory··on GPT-4 can't reason
I tried feeding it some lateral thinking games (black stories) from https://detective-stories.com and it was surprisingly bad at following the game.

I had hoped to implement the API as a bot player but I found it to be too unreliable with its "understanding".
