dessimus··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
TBF, no ads was the original promise of cable tv too. The same media companies figured they could con younger generations with the same broken promises as their parents and grandparents.
dessimus··on Disney+ and Hulu raise prices by up to 13 percent after doubling profits
...and no pre-roll or mid-roll ads, since just about all of the streamers are going to ads in every tier.
dessimus··on Android 17 is the first since 3.x to add new APIs without releasing to the AOSP
Unless there is a real market advantage to it, they won't. Consumers prove over and over again they are willing to trade security to save a few dollars. Furthermore, why commit to providing hardware and software support for a device to last 5+ years, when ~25% of Americans report damaging their device each year[0]. Most of a device's population will have been replaced in 3 years.

dessimus··on AWS says it can't restore some data from mideast facilities struck by Iran
My org isn't a Backblaze customer but a Wasabi one. Wasabi offers the ability to replicate buckets to other zones at double the cost, of course.

I would imagine Backblaze would offer something similar for original data storage for their customers to choose.

dessimus··on LG says we're fake news [video]

Without independent verification from someone like GN, I wouldn't trust "we installed rootkits" Sony not to be spying too.

>If the change contains changes to the UX it has to be approved by a human reviewer.

Would that not imply that a change that does not effect the UX does not have to be approved by a human reviewer? Otherwise, why specifically call out "changes to the UX" and not say "all changes"?

dessimus··on Konrad Zuse Museum shutting down due to lack of funding
On behalf of all Americans, I would like to apologize that our propaganda prevented you from reading the article and understanding that the Museum has existed for his work for some time. Furthermore, I apologize that our propaganda is so strong that not even the Deutsche themselves could overcome it to learn about one of their own scientists, visit and financially support the museum of one of their countrymen.

I guess its only a matter of time until we put the final nail in Röntgen's coffin and the Deutsche finally start using the proper term: X-rays.

dessimus··on Lawmakers added $1 to car insurance policies. That money paid for Flock cameras
Laziness mostly. It takes at least a decade of sustained exhausting mental and physical work to become a doctor, becoming a thief is mostly opportunity.

dessimus··on Where did all the public bathrooms go?
SF is one of the highest cost of living cities in the US. I'm guessing housing and utilities is going to chew up the majority of that $100K, before you even consider medical and mental health visits and transportation to and from those visits, and there is likely tons of resistance from surrounding localities to allowing the City to relocate those they are helping to suburbs where they might find cheaper and/or more accessible housing, food costs, improved access to healthcare, etc.
dessimus··on South Korea proposes talks to officially end war with North
Yeah and...? It's been almost 75 years since the Korean War Armistice. Vietnam was more recent and we don't see Vietnam testing ICBMs over the South China Sea, just in case.

Let's not forget, Trump is the only sitting President to visit North Korea, so they likely have less concern of getting bombed/raided than at any point in their past.

dessimus··on Anna's Archive Owes $340 Million, Lost Several Domains, but It's Still Online
> Why are we still depending on HTTP/DNS based interfaces that are easily taken down by people wanting to limit knowledge?

Those are arguably the hardest protocols to block on the open Internet without causing major issues for all other sites, forcing those trying to take them down to play "whack-a-mole". If they were to create a new "AATP" for distributing data, it would make it trivial to block on every ISPs firewalls.

dessimus··on Anna's Archive Owes $340 Million, Lost Several Domains, but It's Still Online
Less morally questionable than claiming to users they are "buying" access to media that can be revoked at any point in the future with no recompense, of course referring to Sony and Amazon.
dessimus··on Canada suspends trade negotiations with USA and match tariffs dollar for dollar
This comment seems exactly like the school room exercise where the teacher hands out a test with a paragraph of instructions that includes the text buried in it: "do not answer any questions below" and students rush through the test and fail because they didn't bother reading the entire comment before ripping off their own because "our" is ambiguous. There is plenty of context in the comment, even for non-North Americans, since its very unlikely "Donald" was referring to famed Canadian-actor Donald Sutherland.

Or would you prefer every comment on HN to begin with: "As a/an $CountryDemonym..." or other requisite bona fides?

dessimus··on We've flown a radiation-blocking vest to the Moon and back, and it worked
Maybe when its actually demonstrated that it can actually launch with that payload. The largest payload they'd lifted so far is ~45 tons, and the claims I see on Wikipedia say its estimated 200 tons for LEO, not even for geosynchronous orbit much less a lunar trajectory.
dessimus··on Linux 7.3 improves performance when running out of vRAM

dessimus··on South Korea proposes talks to officially end war with North
They also have something NK doesn't: vast oil reserves. If they did, they be even more of a vassal state to China than they currently are, if they even existed as a separate state at all.

Also, NK's sabre-rattling has been going on for decades and is not a response to Trump's actions.

dessimus··on South Korea proposes talks to officially end war with North
Deter the US from what exactly? In what capacity has the US been aggressors towards NK that isn't in support of SK or Japan? If anything China props up NK to keep a Western-aligned unified Korea off their border.

dessimus··on England set to be one of the first countries to eliminate hepatitis C
"State" has lots of meanings depending on context, as it can also refer to the highest level of governments for example: State actors or "head of state". In the U.S., the head of state refers to the President, not to governors in individual states, typically.
dessimus··on We replaced Redis with MySQL for inventory reservations and it scaled
Except airlines, literally oversell flights all the time, and the context of my response was to preventing oversale.
dessimus··on We replaced Redis with MySQL for inventory reservations and it scaled
Would a retail business want the inventory to decrement just because users put items into carts that get abandoned? Seems like that would really mess things up more in the long run.
