deskglass··on Show HN: WikiReverse reverse links to Wikipedia articles
This is awesome. Now, if I come across an interesting article, I can find places that may link to other interesting articles.

A suggestion: It'd be nice to be able to specify an article URL in the article search field. That way you can specify exactly what article you're interested in finding links to. For example, to get to the SMBC article page, I had to manually make my URL https://wikireverse.org/articles/en/Saturday_Morning_Breakfa... , I couldn't get there by searching for "Saturday Morning Breakfast Cereal" (at least it wasn't in the first page of results) or "SMBC."

Anyway, thanks for making and sharing this.

deskglass··on This Man Has Nothing to Hide – Not Even His Email Password
Thanks for the recommendation. I'll check that book out.

Once, in thread similar to this one, I saw another recommendation for The Light of Other Days (http://smile.amazon.com/Light-Other-Days-Arthur-Clarke-ebook.... It explores a world where everyone can see and hear everyone else at any (past and present) time. While I did not always find the plot compelling, I still enjoyed reading it because it explores some cool ideas.

deskglass··on It’s impossible to work your way through college nowadays
If you're interested in this idea you may like The Unincorporated Man, a book partially about a future where people buy and sell stocks of each other. Taxes, for example, are replaced with the government receiving 5% of a person's stock at birth. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unincorporated_Man

I think they were being sarcastic.
deskglass··on Message from Mexico: U.S. Is Polluting Water It May Someday Need to Drink
That redevelopment would have been extremely reasonable if they were the mayor of Sunnydale.

Also, unless that were the only school in the area, your question may have been unproductive. The marginal value to society of a commercial installation can be greater than that of a school.

deskglass··on Show HN: Kimono – Never write a web scraper again
Thanks so much for creating SelectorGadget! I used it a lot when scraping some fanfiction and Wikipedia data.
deskglass··on Money can buy happiness
That link has started charging since I posted it. You can get the paper for free (legitimately) here: http://www.brookings.edu/~/media/research/files/papers/2013/...
deskglass··on Money can buy happiness
According to the paper (page 13), they only look at incomes between the 10th and 90th percentiles. That's why they cut off at $128,000 for US residents.

With that said, I do think it'd be interesting to see a graph that continues past the 90th percentile.

I think the point is that if DDG doesn't collect certain information then it can't give anyone that information.
deskglass··on Anti-ageing compound set for human trials after turning clock back for mice
Anecdotally, yes. A a friend of mine works under a neuroscience researcher. They are studying the effectiveness of a substance at restoring ideal brain function to those who suffer from a disorder. When they asked the researcher why they don't study the substance as a way to improve cognition in already healthy people, they were told that doing so would violate medical ethics.

I have no idea if that's representative of the beliefs of other researchers.

deskglass··on Wikileaks publishes 500k new Stratfor emails
It sounds like they need to improve their billing service.
deskglass··on Avoiding Heart Disease
You're not going to get much protein from vegetables without a lot of carbs unless you eat protein powder. The two foods you cite are good examples. Quinoa is 71% carb, 14% fat, and 15% protein by calorie. Chia is 36% carbs, 53% fat and 11% protein. If you eat protein powder than it works out fine. (I'm vegan and weightlift).
deskglass··on The E-Cigarette Industry, Waiting to Exhale
"I tried e-cigs as a replacement for coffee...it is probably healthier." I'll grant that vaporization ameliorates the problems merely caused by smoke inhalation, but doesn't inhaling nicotine cause many health problems on its own? I'll also not aware of there being health issues that result from drinking a normal amount of tea or coffee.
deskglass··on Civet coffee: why it's time to cut the crap
One such means of reseach is browsing through this site and finding what top rated brands are available where you shop. http://www.cornucopia.org/organic-egg-scorecard/ They also have a less detailed milk scorecard. Note, they only look at organic eggs and they weigh some things other than how the animals are treated based on their political beliefs. Still, they list every category and you can choose which ones you care about.
deskglass··on Civet coffee: why it's time to cut the crap
It's a near perfect generalization depending on where you food shop. Good luck finding eggs from ethical sources at Walmart or Publix.
deskglass··on Wikipedia Will Fail in Four Years (2006)
That's true. I forgot to mention that I capped the lengths of negative edits to 10.
deskglass··on Wikipedia Will Fail in Four Years (2006)
His analysis was better than mine in that he weighed content by persistence. Still, for what it's worth, I found that when edits were weighed by length, the 1000 most frequent editors dominated.

deskglass··on We Need To Talk, Google
I think that at least Youtube accounts now require a phone number when registering. I don't know for sure, but I doubt you can give the same number for multiple accounts.
deskglass··on A Response to Ethical Foodies From a ‘Factory Farmer’
The authors barely responded to arguments about the immortality of the way animals are treated in most farms. They mainly just referred to the people they disagree with derisively and talked about how lucky those people are to not worry about starving. I'll grant that they, in passing, mentioned that gestation crates prevent pigs from fighting.

Their statement that they are able to produce more food for cheaper is a given. It's also a little silly in light of how inefficient meat production is.

This isn't the type of article that actually changes anybody's mind about anything.

deskglass··on A $45 Android tablet
If you don't have a smartphone and want a cheap "tablet," then look into buying a used smartphone. Doing so is super cheap because you don't have to buy a data plan. Besides, phones tend to be more portable. I got a Droid2 for $30 on Amazon.

deskglass··on Show HN: Automatic weekly meal planner, also plans your leftovers
When I set my meal options to only show vegan meals, my recommended protein intake went from at least 101 g to at least 61 g. If anything, being vegan requires me to eat slightly more protein (assuming plant proteins are harder to digest than animal proteins). While it's harder to get protein as a vegan, I don't think that means the protein goal should be lowered.

Also, I agree with others that you predict user behavior very well.

deskglass··on Why people shouldn’t love you for who you are
A counterpoint. Search for Stephen Conn's comment. http://paulbuchheit.blogspot.com/2012/03/eight-years-today.h...

"We are surrounded by an ideology of exceptionalism that teaches us that we will find fulfillment through great personal achievement. But this is a terrible way to build identity. Not because it is crassly inhumane--though it is--but because it is false."

deskglass··on New College of Florida
Recently, there have been many submissions that critique the cost and structure of higher education. As such, I think many of you will find this college interesting. It does not have grades and charges 6k for in-state tuition. I attend it and would be happy to answer any questions that you have about it.
