deskamess··on TSMC Gets $11.6B in US Grants, Loans for Three Chip Fabs
They have said they will not build the best and latest here in the US. Many of the fabless companies here in the US want access to that latest stuff and the US is vested in keeping that channel open for market/defense/security reasons.

The Chip Wars book is an excellent read and tells you us the supply chain is globally integrated. If we were to draw a country graph of technology dependence to create semiconductor technology T (tools, chips, etc) - well, there is no DAG. The defense department is not so happy to see all this free market sharing of essential technology going on as it benefits non-friendly nation(s).

The book also illustrated how behind Russia was/is with weapons technology and semiconductors in general (compared to the US).

Had to go to ChatGPT for help. It appears that you need to know how many tiles to stitch. I was hoping to have that dynamically determined. Not sure if loopback will help.

CGPT said: ffmpeg -i input.mp4 -vf "fps=1,tile=3x1" -frames:v 1 output_stitched.png

Gemini: ffmpeg -i input_video.mp4 -vf "fps=1,scale=220:-1" -c:v png output.png

deskamess··on Excellent succinct breakdown of the xz mess, from an OpenBSD developer
There really is an exception to every rule. "Do not attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by neglect, ignorance or incompetence" and then you come across:

> The stage 0 shell snippet looks at first glance like a plausible part of > the poorly readable autoconf/automake tooling.

> - ffmpeg CLI now all run in parallel

I think I read about this a few months ago but don't remember the details. What exactly does this do? Does it result in faster encoding/decoding if you have multiple filter graphs (for example a single cmd line that transcodes to new audio, extracts image, creates a low res)

> - ffmpeg CLI loopback decoders

No idea what this is...

Edit: threading => https://ffmpeg.org//index.html#cli_threading, loopback => https://ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html#Loopback-decoders

Loopback decoders are a nice concept. So could I use this to create a single ffmpeg command to extract images periodically (say 1/s) and then merge them into a horizontal strip (using the loopback decoder for this part)?

deskamess··on Google is bringing satellite messaging to Android 15
Don't they already use it for emergency purposes on the Iphone 14 and 15? For free on the new phones but I think it is getting subscription based soon.
deskamess··on Garnet – A new remote cache-store from Microsoft Research
I am just happy there is a native Redis-like available on Windows. I believe there is another RavenDB replacement but this one is 'more' official!

Is it possible to use Aspire locally or is it just a cloud only 'framework'?

deskamess··on Boeing 737 MAX engine issue will take up to a year to fix
Culture fix is a long term thing, right? I hope they can survive on just the 777/etc. Over the weekend I finished watching the building of the 777 documentary on Youtube and it was a good watch.

Different industry but where I am we are having a huge doctor shortfall. The culture and mindset required to change it is nowhere/not yet in sight. We need more MD training schools/spots and trainers to get those numbers up, and even then the solution is at best a decade away.

deskamess··on Speech and Language Processing (3rd ed. draft)
Imagine a category - books for machines (some sort of LLM or RAG augment). Kind of like the downloadable helicopter manual that Trinity uses in the Matrix. Then having a higher order integration onto your foundational muscle memory would be the next step. Human (vCurrent + 0.1).

The nice thing is performance would be different based on the human getting it. It kind of preserves some unique element.

deskamess··on Free data transfer out to internet when moving out of AWS
Does that take care of deleting the files inside the bucket? That's an API call ($). Depending on the data that could be quite a bit.

Thanks.
deskamess··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
Would it still be under the default warranty? 1 year or so?
deskamess··on New 13- and 15‑inch MacBook Air with M3 chip
Do you think the new M3 Air w/16 GB could be comparable CPU wise to the M1 Pro? I am guessing GPU wise (for inference like apps) it probably falls behind.
deskamess··on GPT in 500 Lines of SQL
Thanks.
deskamess··on GPT in 500 Lines of SQL
In the tokenization example for '"Mississippilessly", why is 'si' not part of the combined column? It appears twice in the text. My speculation is that it got collapsed out with 'iss' (a longer token). Is that right?
deskamess··on GPT in 500 Lines of SQL
I did that too and could not find a way to collapse it.

deskamess··on Our next-generation model: Gemini 1.5
Is MOE then basically divide and conquer? I have no deep knowledge of this so I assumed MOE was where each expert analyzed the problem in a different way and then there was some map-reduce like operation on the generated expert results. Kinda like random forest but for inference.
deskamess··on Cloud Egress Costs
Thanks. Our use case is simpler so we only have one variant that gets uploaded and served. However we do not have any associated .m3u8 files, so that was my concern.
deskamess··on Cloud Egress Costs
What is 'appropriate transcoding'?
deskamess··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
Yeah... this stood out! Do you have any good alternatives? I wish CloudFlare would do it (IDP).
deskamess··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
I had not updated LINQPad in a while and just saw the price this year. Eeesh. I now live in a .NET Interactive (Jupyter like) environment.
deskamess··on Almost every infrastructure decision I endorse or regret
Yep. Pay us less every month and stick around for a long time. Getting low prices makes it really difficult to move away.

If you still decided to move away, and want to take data with you, yeah... there is a cost. Heck there is a cost to delete the data you have with them (like S3 content).

Its a good way to do business.

deskamess··on Ask HN: Who is still thrilled with their M1 Mac (Mini or otherwise)
Still on an old Intel Air but looking for an M-class does not have to be the latest.

1) How does the M1 Pro compare to the M3 base? Chip performance only.

2) M1 Pro's seem scarce. People holding on to them?
