Out of curiosity, and regardless of this case, how do you deal with artificial manipulation of sentiment on HN?
Nudging the views of one of the most active developer communities in the world has value if you were an adversary. Do you see signs of this?
And if the campaign is sustained over a long period, with all comments/threads being within the guidelines, but heavily biased, how does one defend against it?
It would be naive to assume Reddit is the only platform that manipulates user sentiment. And despite the average user here being more capable of critical thinking, we are all still fallible. Can you speak to any of this?
As for the breaking of rules, dang has commented, and I’ll take responsibility for my actions.
Hypothetically, if I could access only the sites visited by the HN crowd, that would be fine by me. Somebody in an art community might feel similarly. If there were some metric the crawlers could use to rate a page (time spent on page, manually downvote, etc), then the signal/noise ratio would be really good.
Obviously if I wanted to do a really broad search, I'd use a typical search engine, but if it's tech related, I wouldn't mind pages that have been browsed by HN.
I can’t help but think this thread may be a marketing ploy. If this were the case, is it allowed on HN?
Edit: In addition, any negative/challenging/sceptical comment is quickly downvoted.
My partner and I are curious how you made the single assumption? Alas, I’m just the designated dishwasher.
My favourite product of his was the parody of Redhead Matches, a box of matches with a woman’s face on it. Dick sold matches called “Dickheads”, with his face on them.
A friend of mine growing up had Dick perform an emergency landing on their property (in his plane). He must still be an avid flyer as we both attended the same aviation event a couple of years ago in a rural Australian town.
I’m mindful of how fleeting life is, and I wonder whether the focus on wealth accumulation is worthwhile. Perhaps I’m just lazy though!
My one hesitation is that it was recently purchased by an advertising/marketing company.
