derstang··on Wally: Facebook Bot that helps you get the most points from credit cards
Basically a bot rip-off of the similarly named Wallaby, which has been in the market since 2012. https://www.walla.by
derstang··on Show HN: CardBase – the most comprehensive credit card database in the US
Canada suffers from not enough banking competition, for sure. The broad breadth of banks in the US issuing credit cards (more than 450!) make a huge difference
derstang··on Why Your “Team” Page Should Actually Be About Your Team
We're not trying to make the whole page silly. Just have a little fun so you understand what we're like and see if you might want to join us. It's clear you wouldn't--so that's pretty effective.
derstang··on Why Your “Team” Page Should Actually Be About Your Team
Awesome idea. The guy who draws boxes and arrows will work on figuring that out.
derstang··on The Wallaby Card
In the US you don't need chip and pin. Look for it down the road.
derstang··on The Wallaby Card
Card rules vary frequently, down to daily. Also, many rewards have limits (both min and max). Wallaby helps you keep track.
derstang··on The Wallaby Card
There is a good history of this:

  1. Dynamics
  2. Geode (deadpool)
  3. Coin
  4. Protean Echo
  5. Omne Card
  6. GoNow Card
  7. Escardgot
  8. CardLab (http://www.cardlab.com/Mobile-Payment.html)
  9. QSecure (deadpool)
derstang··on The Wallaby Card
We need to launch in one market first. We intend to do chip solutions in the future.
derstang··on The Wallaby Card
Wallaby has an API if any of the smart hardware card guys want us to help out!
derstang··on The Wallaby Card
Good points. We have upgraded our encryption scheme since writing this page. I think trying to explain security to lay people and make them confident is a difficult challenge. We'll get this updated and re-written.
derstang··on Meet Coin (YC W13), a startup creating a universal credit card
well if that's all it takes :)
derstang··on Everpix is Shutting Down
I think Loom does.
derstang··on Everpix was great. This is how it died
I'm using loom (loom.com) and its nice--very similar I think. hope it doesn't go the same way. Yes I am paying :)
derstang··on Don't Start a Company to Be Your Own Boss
Bosses aren't someone to fear. I think investors are overseers of my performance and people to whom I am accountable, therefor, my bosses. I'm not afraid of them. Never work for people you are afraid of.
derstang··on Don't Start a Company to Be Your Own Boss
Yes. Order does not imply anything here.
derstang··on CryptoSeal (YC S11) Shutting Down Private VPN
What I don't understand is why I didn't get a notification of the shutdown. As a paying customer I shouldn't read about it on HN. I used the service primarily to shield myself in hotels/coffeeshops, but I know the NSA can get to me if they want to and I don't really care.

I appreciate the high ground CryptoSeal is coming from, but from a customer standpoint I don't think this was done well.

derstang··on Programming is a Terrible Job
Seems like a complaint anyone could make about any job given theoretical vs. practical.
derstang··on Switch to HTTPS Now, For Free
For another point of view...free is what you get http://danconnor.com/post/50f65364a0fd5fd1f7000001/avoid_sta...
derstang··on Startup lessons
The problem with "rules" is that they live in an ideal world, not the real world. "Give up only 15% of your company" sure, if you are the next Google, but even then every raise they did wasn't perfect. Let's be honest there is an ideal way you would build a company, but it doesn't exist for anybody. Startups are hard and messy. You do the best you can, but you can't just know in advance you're picking the best idea, the best people and fundraising quickly. It's not like that at all.
derstang··on Skeuocard
This list of BINs/IINs is not very accurate beyond the first two digits identifying card network.
derstang··on How One New Service Is Tackling The Death Of The File System
Love the in-depth analysis in this article and seeing if people really don't want the file system. I love organizing in folders, but at the same time true file ubiquity could be a dream come true!
derstang··on My Developer friends are upset about Apple vs Amazon
I think the market punishes Apple because the market is all about future performance and Apple has reached a very high amount of growth and stability over time. That isn't to say it won't continue to do well, but when information is priced in, it's hard to justify the multiples. The businesses are very different--stock price is certainly not indicative of anything engineers think or care about.
derstang··on Windows 8 Launch Tracker - how quickly is Windows 8 adopted?
Interesting progress, but I would like to see how it compares to other MSFT releases
derstang··on Retention Science Launches With $1.3M to Help Companies Retain Customers
Finally someone is going help me stop receiving terrible, mistargeted e-mails from Old Navy!
derstang··on Is Now the Time to Hire MBAs?
In general, I think people put too much weight on the degree. You should hire people because of their skills, background, promise and personality. If they have an MBA is a credential not a reason to/not to hire. I also know a bunch of devs with JDs, but that's not important to whether they can code!
