dermotbrennan··on Learn web development: Django Web Framework
Some sites are a combination of content (blog, products etc) and a login area with a complex UI. A SPA works well for sophisticated user interfaces but is overkill for content that is just for reading. But then you have to decide is it worth jumping back and forth between JS and your server side language (Java/Ruby/Python) or maybe it would be nice to just have one language to rule them all...

Or even for ships and planes. Whats more likely in the long term, that cargo ships will be powered by batteries or that they could be powered by a compact fusion reactor?

Energy diversity and energy security are important.

On the one hand, global trade can strengthen relationships between nations and make war less likely. On the other hand, look at how Russia uses the threat of turning off gas supplies to pressure european countries.

ISPs could at least give customers warnings that they have been compromised. Not everybody will heed those warnings of course...
dermotbrennan··on Why Learning Angular 2 Was Excruciating
Release candidate to me means "We think this software is pretty much done. Does anybody in the community think otherwise?". You don't expect new features or breaking changes. That wasn't what happened during angular2 development.

I started a project at around RC4. It's my own fault to some extent for doing that and not waiting or using angular1.

I found that most of the core functionality like component annotations, ngInit, template syntax didn't change - although I wasnt trying to use the router or forms modules which did experience large changes over the 6 months.

For me most of the pain was in keeping up with changes in the boilerplate stuff in the root of the app like main.ts, modules and and the same keeping up with recent big changes in angular-cli.

Manchuria is close to Beijing and is a relative easy area in China for armies to travel through. It's not mountainous or particularly forested/swampy.

Japan invaded through Manchuria in WW2 so it makes sense for China to have as big a buffer zone as possible in that area.

The border between china and afghanistan is very mountainous and very far away from Beijing.

dermotbrennan··on Kofi Annan on Why It's Time to Legalize Drugs
You could insist that addicts use the government-provided drugs in a clinic. Don't just hand it to them.
dermotbrennan··on Musk: Falcon lands on droneship, tips over post landing [video]
Can someone explain to me why they can't just put a huge net around/under the rocket so that even if it does tip over, it can be safely caught and recovered?
dermotbrennan··on Japan Keeps This Defunct Train Station Running for Just One Passenger
I'm Irish and out of interest I looked up the area of Hokkaido to see how it compares to the island of Ireland and they're actually pretty close - Hokkaido is 83,453KM2 with a population of 5.5M versus Ireland 84,421KM2 with 6.3M. So it is funny to me when you say "Japan keeps the entire island of Hokkaido running for too few people".

Of course, Irelands population is growing while Hokkaido's is dropping...

dermotbrennan··on Why Young Men Go to War
"When you tell other men that you were at this battle, everyone will think you are cool, wish they had been here too and question their own manhood!"
dermotbrennan··on Firefox 29
If you put '/' at the end of the internal address it will resolve it correctly. Although I switch between both browsers a lot so I don't always remember that trick.
dermotbrennan··on Microsoft’s best hope after Ballmer? A break up
I think there's some value in the goal of having a common interface and set of features across desktop, mobile, xbox, server. People would like that. Microsoft haven't achieved that there yet but it's still a worthy goal. I think slimming down and refocusing might be more effective than a massive break-up.
dermotbrennan··on UK to award £1 million for world's biggest problem solution
Livestock produce methane which is a greenhouse gas and contributes significantly to global warming.
dermotbrennan··on The story around the Linode hack
It's ultimately unknowable but I think it's possible to have a very secure system. You just have to take a holistic approach and look at everything in the stack from top to bottom, keep on top of security updates and use the right security procedures. After all that you'll still never know whether it's secure or not...
dermotbrennan··on Memorizing a programing language using spaced repetition software
The problem is that languages and especially libraries change too frequently. A doctor can learn the name of every bone in the body and that knowledge will for the rest of his life. In programming, there are very few things that will still be the same in 20+ years and we have no idea what those things are. It depends on the field but things can change so much within 2 or 3 years that its just not worth memorizing everything.
