derekzhouzhen··on Prose.sh – A blog platform for hackers
You have RSS which is nice, however, it is not advertised in the index html. Please see:

https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Web/HTML/Link_types

It is just a meta tag that will make every feed reader happy.

derekzhouzhen··on Thoughts on RSS
Reaching the audience that value their privacy is a good incentive, at least for most personal bloggers. I don't care who is reading my blog but I do want to make the process as hassle free as possible.
derekzhouzhen··on Thoughts on RSS
> no one can agree on how to put an image in a RSS feed item

There is, if you put a image at the enclosure tag, most feed readers will recognize that.

https://validator.w3.org/feed/docs/rss2.html#ltenclosuregtSu...

derekzhouzhen··on Thoughts on RSS
I don't think RSS is the right place for this kind of interaction. There are many ways to include commenting such as HN, or (shameless plug) https://roastidio.us
derekzhouzhen··on Thoughts on RSS
> RSS is one-way publishing; there is no way for content creators and their audience to interact

I consider this as the main strength of RSS; respecting the privacy of the audience. If the audience want to interact they can still choose to do so. The small amount of friction actually helps to beat down the noises.

derekzhouzhen··on RSS is back as an underpinning to SlackOps
If you need realtime update, then RSS is probably not the right tool. For polling, I currently do the following:

* with `HTTP 304: not modified` result, I'll come back in 60 minutes * if there is any update, I'll come back in 4 hours * if there is no cache control header, such as etag or last-modified, I will poll every 12 hours.

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: My First Streamlit App Can Analyze WhatsApp Chats
I was trying to sign on with github, then it asked for way more privileges than I am comfortable to give, so I bailed.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Lldap, a Simplified LDAP Server
I agree OpenLDAP is not for the casual users. However, storing config in the LDAP itself is a strength; almost everything can be reconfigured at the run time, using the standard LDAP tool.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: RSS Feed Discovery Engine
FYI, I have a lint tool to check the consistency between the blog homepage / blog posts to the blog feed. The alternate link is the first step.

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: RSS Feed Discovery Engine
So it is just alternate link meta then a bunch of heuristics for well known websites? IMHO, everyone should just do the alternate link meta and save everyone else the trouble. Once you made a special rule for someone big, you are just encourage them continue to be sloppy.
derekzhouzhen··on SHOW HN: Building an app to rule all web-based SaaS, need feedbacks from HN
Any web application worth their salt has shareable URL, so I am not getting your point.
derekzhouzhen··on Selfhosting on Localhost
I do this all the time. I have permanent SSH tunnels from my home pc to my VPS and a reverse proxy on my VPS, so I have super fast access to my home apps at home and tolerable access to the same apps when I am outside.

Of course, you need to secure your apps, period.

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Desklamp – convenient and collaborative notemaking on PDFs
I suggest you to add social logins, to lower the bar of trying out.
derekzhouzhen··on Indie Microblogging
Of course there is no objective way. TikTok is more optimized for silly, effortless entertainment, and Twitter is more optimized for opinion leaders to reach out the maximum number of recipients. They all have a purpose.
derekzhouzhen··on Indie Microblogging
For time wasting entertainment, TikTok is better than Twitter.
derekzhouzhen··on Ask HN: Does anybody still use bookmarking services?
For private stuff I only bookmark locally. For non-private stuff I use https://roastidio.us
derekzhouzhen··on Bolt has a cool web interface and they really don't want you to use it
People on HN are not idiots. Users, in a broad sense, are. There are people searching for wordle in the app store for Christ's sake.
derekzhouzhen··on Dato.rss: The best RSS Search experience
I understand that nitter serve a purpose. However, for OP who is trying to crawl high quality content such as blogs and news automatically, nitter is a nightmare.
derekzhouzhen··on Dato.rss: The best RSS Search experience
CMSs are not bad. Worse are the various forums. But the worst is nitter.net, which basically re-exposed the cesspool of twitter in RSS.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: QuickOWL – Quickly open favourite URLs with selected text as input
For the few websites that I need to do frequent posting, I just write a bookmarklet for each. It is one line of javascript.

This can be useful for people that don't want/don't know to code though.

derekzhouzhen··on Ask HN: I miss Usenet. Are there any modern equivalents?
I think what you miss is the time when only the intelligent and sensible <10% of the population are on-line. There was no social network, so Usenet was where the cool kids hanged out. Now that everyone is on-line, and dragged 99% of the intelligent and sensible people over to social networks, so the remaining 0.1% of the population is not large enough to make Usenet interesting any more.
derekzhouzhen··on Twitter Blocks Linking to Mastodon.social
Of course you can link to anything; I was talking about extracting useful information in a program for a richer link preview. A tweet is just a short text or a picture; it is trivial for twitter to have title, og:description, and og:image in their html like everyone else do.
derekzhouzhen··on Twitter Blocks Linking to Mastodon.social
Linking to twitter is horrible too. Try this in your terminal:

> curl https://twitter.com/elonmusk/status/1532710931590959104

There is nothing of value in the static part of the html. For fuck's sake, there is no even title.

derekzhouzhen··on Google has been DDoSing Sourcehut for over a year
With rubygems.org or hex.pm, the package maintainer must explicitly publish a package to the registry. The registry never poll the original source, so the whole issue would not exist in the first place. I found Go's package registry very strange and limited:

* What if I am using a source control program other than git? Mercury?

* What if I have files in my git repo that I don't want to show to the world, like tests?

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Trybsync – A Social RSS Aggregator
I'd suggest you to write some explanation on what do you want to achieve. Also, you may want to implement social login so it would be easier for people to try.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Communication platform for async remote teams
There are several similar tools (slack with a twist) emerged in the last couple of years.

* quill.chat Slack but more social. bought by twitter and shut down. WTF?

* geneva.com. Slack with a feminine touch?

* twist.com. half way between email and slack?

derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Chimu, a Collaborative Learning Platform
Nice idea. How do you avoid the copyright infringement problem? Most of the textbooks do not allow to be posted online.
derekzhouzhen··on RSS Feed Best Practices
Both RSS2 and Atom has official validators. I also have a linter here: https://roastidio.us/lint That check the metadata consistency between the blog and the feed.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Radiopaper – Troll-resistant public conversations
I took a similar approach as radiopaper: everything you say is pre-banned, and only the person you talked to has the sole discretion to lift the ban. during the ban you cannot post again to the same person on the same topic. The other party cannot reply to you without lifting the ban. Once the ban is lifted, everyone else can see it and reply to it.
derekzhouzhen··on Show HN: Radiopaper – Troll-resistant public conversations
It is an interesting concept. Are you going to focus on the people or the topics? If you lean more on people aspect then it will be a social network of some sort. If you focus on topics then it is more like a web forum.
