So you copied something that someone spent time on designing, decided to open-source, and now you're killing the steam for James' pre-order campaign by posting everywhere. You are the reason we cannot share publicly the projects we work on.

depomoty··on Show HN: I built a newsletter platform that lets you write the issues on Notion
Great questions! In Notion you can have as many workspaces as you want, but you only have to pay for workspaces that are shared with your team. So for example, you can create a new personal workspace and use unlimited blocks for free.

Notocat only uses Notion as an editor. If Notion folds, than Notocat will most likely be pivoted to an in-house editor instead. It will definitely affect the business targeting though. This is because services like Notocat are marketed toward Notion users, as you mentioned.

depomoty··on Show HN: I built a newsletter platform that lets you write the issues on Notion
Hey everyone!

I'm Raz, the creator of Notocat and I'm excited to share that I just launched my new product and it's live for everyone to use.

The product started as a Notion to email HTML renderer that I was using for my other business. Then I saw the opportunity to reshape this as an entire product, and Notocat is the result of all the work.

It comes with a lot of features that you'd expect from a newsletter platform, including: - Advanced issues customization - Custom and embeddable subscribe forms - Custom domains - Opens & Links tracking - Contacts API - Best-in-class deliverability

Really happy to receive feedback, so please let me know if there is anything you'd like to share!

Hey! Chartbrew owner here

Grafana is an amazing product and offers a lot more features than Chartbrew. The main difference is that grafana focuses on monitoring performance metrics and Chartbrew is more tailored for business/product metrics.

Also, quite a few of our customers use Chartbrew because of the Firebase integrations

depomoty··on Ask HN: Those making $500+/month on side projects in 2023 – Show and tell
I'm working part-time on my project https://chartbrew.com

It's an open-source data visualization and reporting platform that I started in 2018, I abandoned in 2019, then resumed working on it more seriously in 2020.

Currently, the platform is doing $1,138 in MRR from then managed hosting service and has made over $11k in revenue so far. It's been growing steadily in the last few months but going through a rough Dec-Jan period at the moment. You can see the open page at https://chartbrew.com/open

Onwards and great job everyone at working to make side projects work for you!

depomoty··on Fabra: Product analytics on your data warehouse
Chartbrew founder here, just wanted to clarify for readers that Chartbrew doesn't store any data from the 3rd party tools so there's no silo problem. It queries the data sources, computes the data, and stores only the chart configurations.

The only storage Chartbrew does is to cache the data while building a chart so the data source is not queried too many times and the user can see changes quicker. Afterwards, Chartbrew keeps the charts updated with data coming directly from the other tools.

depomoty··on Show HN: Budibase – open-source Retool alternative – launch their Public API
Looking at the license, it looks like it's possible, but you will need to release your own code under the AGPLv3 license and make it available to others. That means if you add an auth layer on top of the project, you will need to make that layer available under the same license.

> The AGPL License does not permit sublicensing of the code; that is, you cannot rework or add to the code and then close those changes off to the public. The “open source-ness” of the original code follows any update or addition. Both GPL v2 and GPL v3 contain this provision as well.

depomoty··on Ask HN: Autonomous Analytics Monitoring
Hey! Chartbrew creator here

Although the platform updates the data automatically for you, it doesn't support notifications yet. Notifications are planned for Q2 this year. I think for system monitoring, Grafana might be a better choice currently.

If you give Chartbrew a try, don't hesitate to get in touch if you have any questions. I'd be happy to help!

depomoty··on Show HN: Open-Source multi-dashboarding platform for teams and client reporting
One use-case that the platform is being used for is for B2B SaaS businesses to offer their analytics through Chartbrew. So it is possible and there are people already using it like this.

Or if you're wondering if you can offer the analytics platform by itself as a SaaS, I built a SaaS layer on top of it here: https://chartbrew.com

depomoty··on Show HN: Open-Source multi-dashboarding platform for teams and client reporting
I'm afraid I don't have that much info on PowerBI so I can't speak about its ease of use. I know for sure it has more analytics feature so it's better when it comes to digging deeper in your data.

The pricing is a bit strange since you apparently pay by the hour you show users the dashboards and monthly, it starts from $700+/m which is much more than Chartbrew as a service (which is also free to self-host).

Another thing I'm not sure PowerBI has, are templates so that you can replicate dashboards for separate clients. In Chartbrew you can create your own custom templates or use the ones already created in the platform.

But before starting to use any of the services, make sure you data sources are supported by the platform.

Thanks for dropping by!

There is a basic transformation layer that does basic arithmetic and string concatenation. This is a continuous work in progress as I add more options the more feedback I get from customers. I actually received a request for extra transformations just yesterday. So gotta put those in the roadmap!

depomoty··on Show HN: Open-Source multi-dashboarding platform for teams and client reporting
I'm not very familiar with PowerBI to be honest, but from what I'm seeing it's heavily integrated with Microsoft services which Chartbrew is not made for.

Chartbrew offers some different options for integrations such as custom API integrations (works with any REST API), MongoDB, and Firebase.

Also Chartbrew is not as complex as PowerBI which can be both a minus and a plus, depending on the use-case.

depomoty··on Show HN: Open-Source multi-dashboarding platform for teams and client reporting
Good question!

The main difference is that Chartbrew is tailored more for companies working with clients in need of dashboards. What this means is that Chartbrew has granular permissions on dashboard-level to allow the clients to explore the data, a templating feature to quickly create dashboards for new clients, and easy embedding to get any chart in your own product.

Not yet documented, but Chartbrew also has an API for creating dashboards from templates through its API. This will allow product owners to spin up a new dashboard whenever they get new users/clients in their platform.

User signs up -> New dashboard is created -> User is given access to the new dashboard -> Charts are made available in other apps

Another obvious difference is in the feature set that is more vast in the other two solutions. This is both a blessing and a curse. Some feedback I received was that it was easy to create visualizations because of the simplicity. I'm always improving on current visualization aspects whenever a client needs something more complex, though. I'm aware I would never be able to come close to the more mature solutions, so I'm serving other use-cases instead. Hope this all makes sense :)

depomoty··on Show HN: Open-Source multi-dashboarding platform for teams and client reporting
Hey everyone, the creator of the project here

In the past year I decided to change the direction of this project a bit and aim to help agencies create quick dashboards for their clients. This seemed to be the main use-case Chartbrew was being used for.

Lots of new features have been developed to make this process easy, such as the introduction of templates, multiple new integrations and Firestore support which seemed to be underserved by the other dashboarding tools.

This project has been a massive undertaking, but it's rewarding to work on it since I enjoy working in this space. This year I also started making some money with the project, which also helps for sure!

I'll be around reading any feedback you may have about the project. Thanks for dropping by!

depomoty··on Ask HN: What low-code “dashboarding“ SaaS would you recommend in 2021?
You can give https://chartbrew.com/ a try if you wish. You can make the API requests in a Postman-like interface directly on the platform. So you can have live-data coming in as the tool makes the requests automatically for you.

You can also have multiple requests made to different services gathering data on the same chart.

Disclaimer: I'm the creator of the tool, so feel free to ask any questions about it and I'll be happy to answer

depomoty··on Poll: Do you use your mouse when you code?
I use my mouse (or touchpad) when I navigate between files. In the file itself, I usually use keyboard shortcuts. I also use my mouse when I need to skim quickly through a longer file.
depomoty··on Show HN: Tableau-like Data Visualization library (free), powered by WebAssembly
This looks super cool! I like the fact that, like you said, the focus is on the data and not on preparing the chart configuration stuff. I can definitely use this in my project where I had to write to write an algorithm to parse the data to a valid configuration for ChartJS. I bookmarked this and definitely gonna try it soon. Will let you guys know. My project is also open-source if you wanna check it out https://chartbrew.com
depomoty··on Show HN: I built an open-source data viz tool that connects to DBs and APIs
No worries, I get this all the time and all I can say now is that functionality-wise most of those existing solutions are better.

The difference is in the mission I have planned for Chartbrew. I want to focus more on the user-centric and collaborative design rather than on functionality. So Chartbrew will never be as complex as many other tools there, but I'm 100% sure I can design it better. And I also plan to focus a lot on building a community interested in innovation and design. Hope this wasn't too vague. Feel free to ask me any other questions and I can clarify a bit more on different aspects.

depomoty··on Show HN: I built an open-source data viz tool that connects to DBs and APIs
Hey everybody,

I wanted to share with all of you the project I’ve been working for a while now called Chartbrew. It is an open-source data visualisation tool that can connect to APIs or certain databases to fetch the data directly from there. At the moment it’s possible to create time series and simple pattern charts.

I started working on this with my partner in crime in the summer of 2018 and had a huge break of almost a year of not working that much on the project. In September this year, I decided to refactor the code and offer it as an open-source solution.

It was an amazing decision and since then I’ve been actively working on it whenever I get a break from uni and work. I also started streaming the progress and in the past couple of weeks I’ve been streaming almost every evening until around 1 AM, then continuing until 2-3AM in my bed.

I realised that I actually enjoy working more on the project since I decided to not treat it as a business. The initial idea was to create this as a SaaS and try our best to focus on the business aspects of it. Well, all that led to the period of burnout. Now it actually feels good to sit down, code, design and come up with new ideas.

I’ve been studying HCI research, UX design and data visualisation for the past 1.5 years and I now plan to pour all this knowledge in making Chartbrew a different and a better tool than the multiple existing ones out there.

Some items in the Roadmap coming soon:

* Re-designing the chart creation screens completely

* Allow combining data connections and plot charts from these combination

* Adding collaboration tools to co-create charts with other people remotely

* Collaboratively analyse dashboards, write notes, etc.

More here (needs a bit of re-work) - https://trello.com/b/IQ7eiDqZ/chartbrew-roadmap

I will be more than thrilled to welcome everybody in the community I’m creating around Chartbrew. Any contribution is welcomed, from feedback, suggestions and code help. The code is still a bit “all over the place” since the project didn’t completely move from the MVP stage, but I made progress towards fixing that.

Thanks a lot for reading! Let me know what you think of Chartbrew :)

depomoty··on Show HN: Organise remote standup meetings with others around the world
Hey everyone,

It all started a week ago when I challenged myself to build a product while streaming the process. It was a good opportunity for me to get out of my comfort zone and code in front of others. The stream itself was a success in my opinion with almost 1k people watching over the 10-hour stream.

The product I built is called RemoteStandups and the idea came from the Indie Hackers forum when I noticed several threads made by people to find potential candidates to organise standup meetings together. So I thought there's gotta be a better way of doing that so I built RemoteStandups as a different solution to that problem.

You find or create a standup meeting on the site and then before the appointed time, you will receive a notification with a unique URL to a video group chat with the rest of the people in your standup group.

The site itself is quite simple, but it serves its main function. I would be grateful if you can have a look and give me some feedback, roast the site or anything that comes to your mind

If you want to support my launch you can also vote for my product on Product Hunt or just join there for a conversation.

I use Atom, so I definitely recommend that. You can install all sorts of plugins to help you out with different things. For example you can install an Eslint extension that will show you all the errors depending on your eslint configuration. I'm sure others have similar support, but haven't really used them.

It's my pleasure to do that. This feels great for me to finally launch something of my own and get so much great feedback from the community. I'm currently at work, but can't wait to get home hack a bit more on the app!
