A tech comparison would be 4 or maybe 3 nm chips. Imagine everybody in the world would fork over 200B and order 7 billion chips this year... your constraint in that case is the manufacturing equipment and there are only so many experts in that area. The vaccine technologies we are using are scaled for the first time so you don’t have a big pool of experts or companies. The Chinese vaccine is probably the one best suited for scaling up and they are doing that rapidly.
The regency period is interesting because it combines the influence of the French Revolution with the aristocratic society of England. Clothes, fashion and behavior no longer were supposed to match your role and status but also your personality. So you have individualism and princes and balls and at the same time it feels quite modern. So it’s not that Jane Austen wrote some books, she lived in a time where she could write books that feel quite modern to us.
Remember that Astra Zeneca was supposed to manufacture for their contract before the EMA decision. Their first notice that they would only deliver a small part of the planned total was one week before the EMA decision. So I don't fault AstraZeneca if something went wrong at their plant, but imagine they would have told everybody in December that they have problems, there is no lack of production plants in the EU, alternatives might have been possible. This is no way to handle such a sensitive issue.
Did the EU commission act brilliantly all the way... probably not, but it's not like AstraZeneca gave them a chance to act brilliant.
Let's take a step back:
- the EU has a binding contract with Astra Zeneca
- the idea is to manufacture vaccine before the EMA decision
- one week before the EMA decision AstraZeneca tells everybody that there are only 30% of the agreed doses
Now that is super weird, who would do something like this and communicate something like that in the last moment.
The EU is of course now under intense pressure because people are calling them every day and telling them that they are killing their citizens.
I think comparisons between the strategy of the UK and the EU or even better Israel are stupid, of course the UK and Israel are able to be faster...they are smaller. But the total volume of available vaccine limits the possibilities for the EU. If the total volume of the UK would be avalailable for the EU it would be a drop in the bucket. And I really don't get all the "race" reporting, it's highly unlikely that vaccination speed differences between one to 3 months will make any difference in mortality.
That's not true and true at the same time. There are myriad instances where management by metrics leads companies totally astray, bit it can easily argued that they are badly managed or have a bad strategy.
The core of any kind of measurement effort is a clearly defined objective that sits in balance with other objectives, and the important thing is these objectives are sometimes in conflict with each other, like finance and UX, measuring both gives the company a chance to find the right balance.
From which country? US citizen get special priority when they move to Germany, in reality that means that I never heard of any US citizen having any kind of problem emigrating to Germany (and my wife is an immigration attorney).
This is a good article but there is a causality problem. I know a lot of pure software companies in the EU that work like that. If software is your core business, developers are in the loop at every decision, if your core business is building power plants...they are not. Now the Marc Andressen argument might be that software eats the world and everybody should run their business like this, and that might actually be true or not. Beside this product/core relationship problem, I see one other issue and that are margins, many SV companies are comparatively young and are in new markets with high margins (or ridiculously high funding) these high margins change their way of doing business.
There is no possible way to target superspreaders, a lot of spreading happens in work or private situations we can’t know in advance who will spread it there. And the possible age groups are too large so we will see no effect immediately with the limited supply of vaccine. Starting with the eldest and those who are most likely to die from COVID should bring mortality down in the next 16 weeks. And afterwards we can work on reaching herd immunity.
So it is a racist thing? Otherwise I still don’t get the “advantage” or who gains by this spreading it. The CP as heir to the history? Is it about legitimacy?
I think he was trying to say that the NYTimes has no relevant Chinese market so it can’t be coerced by chinese regulations or threatened with a destruction of that part of their business. Global platforms can be threatened, so they adapt their content strategy.
So true - and the comparison might not even be possible, but Europe had very small units fighting each other and at the same time there was a feeling of common religion and culture. That is pretty unique and uniquely stupid. So let’s state it a bit differently we are complete idiots and we were mostly governed by 5 families over 1000 years and these 5 families fought each other and burned everything into the ground and then married each other. So to be no longer governed by complete idiots that fight each other mostly for entertainment there is the EU.
I think on a higher level most views of societies and technology will converge on a very abstracted “evolutionary” view. Looking at Kellys argument you could say the same thing “it has a will” about evolution ...but evolution certainly has no will, it just has probabilities and fitness of certain variants for certain environments. The same thing is true about technology there is a certain fitness of a solution for the environment and that environment is based on technological, market and societal “fitness”. Speaking about agency like Kevin Kelly does makes no sense in that context.
UBERs total funding was 25 Billion, that might not be the best example but funding on this scale is not possible in Europe. The core limit is the market size (every EU market needs specific teams) and the funding.
Mostly it exists so we don’t kill each other -European imperialism is a direct outgrowth of being the most warlike continent for hundreds of years. When they talk about “civil war times” in the history of China ... that’s the whole history of Europe. I have 300 castles around my hometown ... I can find WW2 bombs and Munition from the 30 years war in the forest.
On the user side without question, but ion the developer side this enormous convenience for the user is worth much more than 30 percent. This is not Marketing this 50% of your sales funnel.
I never in my life bought that amount of software compared to the App Store, it’s convenient and mostly safe.
Apple paid revenue in the store is two times higher than Googles. I think this is directly correlated with convenience and safety.
I think it's quite tragic that you got downvoted in a thread about independent thinking. Seriously people, you might disagree with his point, but it's very independent, has a lot of substance compared to all other comments, provides links.
It's a totally useless metric for productivity but I think the adoption thing is something that should be tracked and used. I big corporates you have a lot of holdouts that will send Emails instead of using a shared Doc for the next 10 years if you don't somehow tell them to not do that.
And no question this has nothing to with productivity or an individuals impact on the company, but I think we here seriously underestimate ho slow some people are in using new available tools and I can see some value in that perspective.
We manage a lot of social ads for brand in Germany, which is obviously the biggest EU market. It‘s mostly very slow adoption rate of new channels, so it‘s mostly lag. Additionally FB Sales internationally has been mostly horrible, so I think they just did a horrible job in their ad sales in Europe. OF course some parts of it like the split between digital and other channels is not only FB responsibility, but still... I think they are just horrible in this. I just had a client who invests Millions with Google every year and nothing with FB, there might be a good argument for let‘s say 60% Google or 90% Google but there is nor argument for 100%. So lag, less availability marketing budget on total and a stupid sales process.
While I understand the discussion, in general Medical doctorates in Germany do not have the same standards as other PHDs. “Mouse dying after not being fed for a month” could actually be a real title, the problem for German doctors is that they more or less have to have the title.
Siemens just announced that they are expecting all employees to shift to 50% home office. I think they have about 380.000 employees, of course that is just one example but I think a broader shift is happening, not a 100% remote shift.
I don‘t know, I am not a fan of Mitt Romney but his social status seemed to be more dependent on being a successful governor and managing the olympics. Both are net positives for society, his business record actually was his weakness.
