departure··on Don’t pay for 95% (2016)
It happens in my single-family home and duplex filled neighboorhood in urban Austin TX.
departure··on US military increasingly using drone missile with flying blades in Syria
> Thanks to the export of fundamentalist Islam from certain countries,

Yes Saudi Arabia which we continue to sell weapons to and blindly support. This administration is even more willing to bend to SA, as seen with Trump's visit and subsequent veto the bipartiston resolution to end US military assistance in Saudi Arabia’s war in Yemen.

> while America has been fortunate to be spared from a major terrorist attack since 9/11

That is untrue. The Orlando shooting was absolutely driven by islamic fundamentalism, as was the 2015 Chattanooga and San Bernardino attacks and arguably the Boston Marathon Bombings.

departure··on Parents are 5X as Worried about Infection and School than Work and Paying Bills
>Remaining local eviction moratoriums will expire in the next few months, although court backlogs will probably provide an additional time buffer.

Only if you're lucky enough to live in one of the progressive states, Louisiana has already started evicting people. In Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has already released documents saying that local governments can't stop or delay evictions.

departure··on One-third of New York’s small businesses may be gone forever
220 deaths in my 2million+ county is nothing. Society would of carried on perfectly fine.

The economic depression screwed us over way more.

departure··on One-third of New York’s small businesses may be gone forever
Then don't go to a restaurant or bar. Down here in Texas we opened in May and left it up to the individual to make the health choice. I'm active and going to the gym daily and bars during the weekend, but I have friends who won't go outside and haven't dined in a restaurant since March.
departure··on Ask HN: What are the most interesting things in tech lately?
I went though every link and there was not a single interesting or cool thing.

Outside of the real estate company they are all gambling and coin 'investing' companies. I was bullish on ethereum and still have ~$11k from early purchases but I lost interest as it's all people trading alt-coins to trying strike it rich without creating anything.

departure··on U.S. Economy Contracted at Record Rate Last Quarter
>there will probably be some people who scoop up these shops for a steal

Yes, the ultra rich. This pandemic has resulted in the greatest upward transfer of wealth in history.

departure··on US homebuilding surges as coronavirus sparks flight to suburbs, rural areas
I think that's wishful thinking, St Louis was declining way before covid. I don't see a stop of migration happening anytime here in the Austin metro or any of the other major Texas cities. We may see it in HCOL places but I wouldn't count on people leaving Denver, Portland, the NC Triangle, and the similar 'B cities'

departure··on Full Employment
Counterpoint as someone who group around the trades and whose friends parents where mostly in working class trades, they all stressed going to college so we didn't end up working hard like them.

My parents knew I could make really good money with welding and masonry like other family members but also knew that we were rough to our body, I had a uncle who lost an eye on the job! To someone working 8-10 hrs in the Texas heat all year wearing your body everyday and being physically exhausted by closing time. Sitting in an office and surfing HN is paradise to my old friends.

departure··on Snapchat Detection on iOS (2019)
Are there any good open source libraries or even commercial tools for root detection and app code obfuscation like discussed in this thread:

departure··on Markets, Rent and WFH
>When you have young children, your demand for... visiting local microbreweries diminishes, as there are now more things that occupy your time and attention

I totally agree and I'm sure the data supports it but before covid every brewery in Austin was packed with families. I actually stopped visiting many during the weekends because there would be dozens of loud kids with tired and defeated parents drinking nearby. It was annoying.

departure··on CIA hacking unit failed to protect its systems, allowing Vault 7 disclosure
I don't remember that one but it's similar to the wifi pineapple vulnerability that was being exploited a few years ago.

departure··on Apple adds 192-room hotel to plans of Northwest Austin campus
Houston != Austin.

Our freeway system is ridiculous. We have a single interstate, multiple tolls and no 'loop' around the city. Houston and Dallas may be famous for their 8 lane highways but that is not how Austin is designed.

departure··on Remote work can also be a source of socioeconomic inequality
Funny you mention that. Krogers, the largest super market in the US, announced today they are ending 'hazard' pay. Lasted for little over a month.
departure··on Ask HN: What is your strongest argument against remote work?
Well of course you like it, you are lucky enough to have an office. If everyone had that or least not open office bull pens then I could also see the appeal.
departure··on Americans are underestimating how long disruptions will last, health experts say
Older folks? I have a mid 30's coworker who used to get most of social activity from the office and tech events and meetups (which is bad for a whole other set of reasons) but even from our fairly active work and friend group chats and you can tell he's really feeling the loneliness and depression.

He started drinking more during the week and has mentioned several times that he is very sad and can't wait for this to be all over. I know that there are thousands of people in the exact same scenario.

departure··on Engineer who attended cybersecurity event contracts coronavirus
SXSW in Austin was recently cancelled and the organization is considering bankruptcy. They laid off 1/3 of their full-time staff due to the cancellation.

departure··on It takes now 53 weeks salary to earn same as 30 weeks in 1985
Is this a joke. Miami is actually known to have the worst inequality he country. [0]

As the articles points out there are 30 billionaires but "Miami-Dade’s middle class is relatively small and shrinking steadily, the report found. Just over 43 percent of Miami households qualify as middle class, the 11th-lowest proportion among the 53 U.S. metros with populations of more than one million. And that proportion has shrunk significantly over the decades"

That doesn't even address the fact that the HN crowd will never be owners of the bentleys and rolls-royces, billionaires have unattainable wealth, a FANNG engineer has to work for centuries to be even close.

departure··on Climbing the Wealth Ladder
You also need to consider that the median tenure at these type of companies are 2-3yrs[0][1][2] (1.1 at google!). In my experience that's not enough to get the full stock grants.

So even from those that could make it very few stay long enough to make these great riches your imagining.

departure··on Nearly 1 in 5 Millennial Renters Expect to Rent Forever in Some Metros
Straw man, almost no one is suggesting 50+ floor apartments in residential neighborhoods. Simply adding a few 4-5 floor apartments buildings with retail at the bottom would greatly improve quality of life in neighborhoods.
departure··on Ask HN: What's a promising area to work on?
Gambling was a big deal when currencies like ethereum came out but the inability for true randomness, without an external oracle, really killed it. IMO.
departure··on Think young people are hostile to capitalism now? Wait for the next recession
That does not surprise me. That generation benefited from those tax rates by living some of the best recorded lives in history and don't want to do anything that could change their own status quo now that they are rich and powerfull.
departure··on Websites have been quietly hacking iPhones for years, says Google
In my experience iOS does an automatic reboot when updating.
departure··on Eat less meat: UN climate change report calls for change to human diet
> with one of the top weight lifters being vegan

That's not exactly true, he's just some buff guy that is strong. He doesn't even look big compared to bodybuilders, regular protein eaters at the gym are his same size.

His 'record' deadlift was 360kg, worlds strongest men all pulled 420kg+ this year. Arnold was in that class back in the 70's.

EDIT: After some research people are saying his european world records were all accomplished before he became vegan in 2011.

And?

It's kind of like how I've seen you comment multiple times about how software shouldn't be written in C. You even said it during the DNS fuzzing thread earlier today.

You saying that is just as pointless. You would be very surprised at how much new stuff is written in C!

departure··on Apple Moves Mac Pro Production to China

departure··on VR is opening up new ways to experience art
What is the best way to create VR art? I'm very interested in the medium but currently do not have a rig or capable home computer, but am not opposed to picking one up. Any recommendations?
