densone··on Anthropic CEO: Open-Source AI is getting dangerous (2023)
I’d be scared of glm-5.2 as well. It’s amazing and the main model I use now.
densone··on Reverse engineering a $1B Legal AI tool exposed 100k+ confidential files
If I had a dollar for every time I saw something like this or for every time someone exposed a .git with a .env full of secrets
densone··on Registrar hover.com gave my domain away via the phone
one of the worst days I've ever had with technology in 25 years of engineering.
densone··on Registrar hover.com gave my domain away via the phone
Someone called a hover.com CSR, and got them to reset my password on the phone. Think twice before you use them.
densone··on We're migrating many of our servers from Linux to FreeBSD
jails. The main reason I chose to use FreeBSD over Linux and it has only proven to be a better choice for what I do on a daily basis.

I guess to each their own but I dislike docker. I think it’s bloated and over complicated.

densone··on We're migrating many of our servers from Linux to FreeBSD
My issue is performance. But I’ve only read about UFS performance. So it might be fine?
densone··on We're migrating many of our servers from Linux to FreeBSD
First off FreeBSD FTW. I use it everywhere over Linux now for the first time in 25 years and couldn’t be happier. My only wish is that BSD had a better non-CoW file system. Databases and Blockchains are already CoW so it does irk me slightly to use zfs for them. That being said, I’ve never had a problem because of it.
densone··on We're migrating many of our servers from Linux to FreeBSD
Same .. I don’t use the separate loop back. Just firewall what I need to firewall .
densone··on Web3 Is Bullshit
I like how you claim Facebook deletes Nazi pages.
densone··on Wikimedia narrows down the app sendin 90M requests to a pic of flower
We need goatse anycast address
densone··on Facebook May Have Once Used Coldfusion
I am not sure about this but am 100% MySpace used cold fusion on login.
densone··on Hertz bug leads to people being erroneously arrested and jailed
This happened to me! I flew to jacksonville FL, and they gave me a car. upon return they were all freaking out because the car was reported stolen. I was like wtf, here’s the keys, and got to my plane. I would have been pissed if I was arrested.
densone··on IBM Watson Overpromised and Underdelivered on AI Health Care
IBM MAKE great commercials. Those commercials are just as gimmicky as most of the products.
densone··on Shorewall – The End of the Road
Yes this is a wrapper and it persisted iptables well. But for anyone that says shorewall is just a wrapper, probably just skimmed a manual and don’t understand the real genius here.

what shorewall really did was make iptables feel like a polished usable firewall. iptables on its own is shit to work with. shorewall made it easy to use in so many cases.

congrats on your retirement and thanks for a great tool that I used for many years.

densone··on Ask HN: Best Command-Line Applications?
pine
densone··on Khosla Rebuffed as Supreme Court Rejects Beach-Access Appeal
Not surprised. This guy invested in a company I founded. I had a friend call me and basically say “this dude is horrible, don’t let him invest”. I could write a book about how that investment ended up working out for me personally.
densone··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
anyone know if it will support pre-auth .. I own a nightclub and this would be clutch. I saw they have a preauth endpoint. But, can I preauth for $1 and capture $100
densone··on Stripe Terminal – Programmable point of sale
stripe gets probably 0.8% + 5¢
densone··on Andy Gross has died
Andy was a very close friend and the best coworker that I’ve ever had. I recently did a personal reference for him and he was looking to work out here on the east coast. I’m crushed that I just found this out on HN through a friend. Andy was like a magnet. One of those people that you generally wanted to be around. In my eyes he was the perfect mixture of skill, hilarity, and crudeness. I tell stories almost every day of things we’ve done at work and out of work. We drank a lot of beer, did a lot of engineering, and pulled a lot of stunts. At the end of the day he proved to a lot of people you can engineer, sell, and be an insane rebel when it comes to the work environment. This is a life taken way too soon. I’ll miss you andy. -sean

thanks for your interest.

densone··on Helium.co: Connect devices to the web without Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Cellular
Hey dotBen. Messages are aes-256 encrypted. Every single device on helium has its own unique secret. We will be writing about this on the blog very soon.

You can further encrypt your own payloads to keep them extra secret from us too.

densone··on Helium.co: Connect devices to the web without Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Cellular
Helium Protocol is based on 802.15.4. You are correct.
densone··on Helium.co: Connect devices to the web without Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Cellular
Not using 6low. All frequencies we use are unlicensed spectrum.
densone··on Helium.co: Connect devices to the web without Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or Cellular
api. all good questions.

1) The IPv6 ends at helium's routing network. So, to and from the bridge can be ipv6 or ipv4. The devices ipv6 addresses live on the helium edge routers themselves. I think on our website it's a graphic that says "platform".

2) You are close. The devices are a custom protocol (no tcp/ip or udp at the device). 802.15.4 frames.

3) replace cloud-db with a distributed system that your programs and helium's programs can subscribe to, and send and receive data to helium devices or groups of device.. You will be able to communicate to the helium network, the same way our fusion application does.

densone··on Ask HN: CTO wants me to leave
First question I have. Do you at least have a double trigger in your stock agreement.

New CTO / Wants your out. Some stock option agreements have a double trigger where this can make you vest 100%. Make sure to look over it thoroughly.

densone··on Go Channel Axioms
Great writeup. Dave took the time to help me with the same issue (sending an interface to a nil channel) and I am grateful.
densone··on Rewriting the Buildbox Agent in Go
Loving this line. Always nice to see a crafty/simple way to check for many different http responses.
