denkmoon··on Just the rumour of a bug is enough to find an exploit these days
Bugs are a choice by managers, not developers.
denkmoon··on Disruption with Some GitHub Services – Resolved
Bin chicken is local slang for these horrible birds ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australian_white_ibis ), and “go full x” is also a common utterance, but I’ve never heard them said together like that.
denkmoon··on Version Control for Everything
why not version control those things? if they're static, there's no changes so version controlling them has little cost. maybe existing tools aren't adequate for this conception of the world, but I don't think that's a good reason not to work towards "version control everything"
denkmoon··on AI usage patterns in software teams
Absolutely, have warned my juniors of this. Doesn't stop malicious compliance though, I can just prompt and burn tokens with source material from my assigned tickets for no reason perfectly fine.

I look at my colleagues' screens and they're prompting shit like 'restart this program' and 'is [service] running correctly'. I have below average prompt frequency because I know crazy shit like #!/bin/bash and ps aux. It's so goddamn insane.

And to top it all off, my token count is above the average, it's just the prompt count that is low. Got questioned about it earlier this week.

denkmoon··on AI usage patterns in software teams
because my manager will ping me and say "anon you aren't prompting enough" like they never heard of Goodhart's law before.
denkmoon··on The Life and Death of Direct File [pdf]
Having also worked in a public position like that, there are so many dumb things that go on that didn't need to but the idea of pretending a 1hr job would take 40 would be unconscionable. 1hr jobs could routinely take 10 because of paperwork, approvals, etc (and same for my stupid bigcorp jobs), but not deliberately so they could bill more hours.
denkmoon··on An update on leaving Gmail for Fastmail
A few hours pf effort to liberate your email from Google. Well worth imo.
denkmoon··on Tell HN: Cloudflare silently injects its analytics when you switch nameservers
Maybe don't use CF if you don't want someone fucking with what you're serving. It's their entire raison detre.
denkmoon··on The Life and Death of Direct File [pdf]
You could just light the money on fire instead and get the same result. Contractors routinely screw the tax payer. I once had a job in one of these third parties where the entire operation was effectively defrauding the tax payer by claiming 1hr jobs would take 40.
denkmoon··on CFTC declares market emergency, orders Kalshi to continue to operate in New York
An order to _continue_ operation? Has that ever happened before?
denkmoon··on The Psychedelic Toad of the Sonoran Desert
The type of mind that could genuinely benefit from a psychedelic…
denkmoon··on Almost no skill required to cook a steak
Most of us aren't making software with fatal consequences. Most. I'd say the typical aviation job offers a few more chances for fatal consequences.
denkmoon··on I stopped trusting USB-C cable labels and started testing them
What device would I encounter in my day to day which would use 240W charging though?
denkmoon··on U.S. used 'virtually all' of its long-range precision missiles during Iran war
You don't pay twice as much just because you can lol
denkmoon··on I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux
What do you use? both in terms of hardware and software. I love the idea of a linux phone but I'm very skeptical.
denkmoon··on Zigbee vs. Matter over Thread:Understanding IoT Protocol Performance in Practice
Do you have any smarthome stuff? Standing around waiting 30 seconds for your light to come on would be moronic. A complete regression over the electric switch invented in 1884. I'd rip everything out right then and there. Your home should be reliable, smart or no.
denkmoon··on Don't be a meat proxy
US centric data, absolutely useless. This is just measuring american decline, not civilisation changes.
denkmoon··on Developers are attached to tools because tools encode trust
What's really freakin cool about AI development is other people can check rules into the repo which change the shape of my tools :)
denkmoon··on Document-borne AI worms can self-propagate through Copilot for Word
Nobody cares. Nobody with the power to do anything about itcares because they don't bare the costs.

You can see this pre AI with how companies handle data breaches. They never cared about security outside of reducing financial liability. Why would they let such petty concerns, which they are already insulated to the hilt against with all the well practiced liability reducing procedures and checklists, prevent them from capitalising on "massive productivity gains"?

denkmoon··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
mate I wish I could retire from this hellscape.
denkmoon··on An Uncomplicated Man – A review of The Odyssey, directed by Christopher Nolan
Is the audio engineering bad in this one like all his others?
denkmoon··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
Just today I had an incident review meeting resulting from a prod incident where the root cause was an LLM refactor stripping ! from the front of a boolean statement "for no reason". Not to mention how often I've seen garbled output from the LLM.

Lots of things failed for that to reach prod, but the assertion that LLMs do not make subtle typos... is not congruent with my experience.

denkmoon··on A missing underscore sent innocent man to prison for 18 months
Insane. An LLM is just as likely to hallucinate a missing/extra underscore and ping the wrong person. A machine cannot be held accountable.
denkmoon··on Netflix employee fired for sharing personal details in retreat trust exercise
At the same time they want to leverage all the "humanity" they can to get you to work more for less.

We're a family here, after all. You wouldn't leave your colleagues hanging, would you?

denkmoon··on America has become an entrepreneur's paradise
Not everyone is housed and well fed. Homelessness in the US is at a 20 year high. Same for Australia.
denkmoon··on IRGC claims it destroyed Amazon's Bahrain data center
What would you expect to see if they were? ooc
denkmoon··on A24 Is Copyright Striking Backrooms Artwork Older Than the Movie
The fact that there are no consequences for the bad behaviour is why the companies do not fear engaging in bad behaviour. Like they give two hoots about people believing their apology outside of mitigating further consequences.
denkmoon··on OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe
Pretty sure that can be done with a paper contract too, but sure.
denkmoon··on LG to ban residential proxies from smart TV apps
I can only imagine the meetings at microsoft HQ where they all sat around a table and crossed their fingers and hoped that vendors would act in the spirit of their design.
denkmoon··on HomeLab #1: MikroTik as a Home Router
Buying nice hardware is orthogonal to using debian as your router's OS.
